Fedora Installation :: F11 In A Virtual PC Environment On Win7
Oct 2, 2009
I'm not exactly a newb (anymore), but I'm trying to get F11 to install in a virtual PC environment on Win7.
I'm installing on a tablet PC, so I want to do the virtual thing first, to see if Linux can handle the touch screen the way I need it to before I put only Linux on here. The problem I'm running into is that the install wants to default to "text mode", which isn't really a problem, but upon the first reboot, the graphics are all messed up, and I can't get the install to continue.
Is there a command line I can modify to use standard VGA settings during the install, but "redetect" the display settings when the install is complete and I'm ready to use F11?

I would like to install a very light linux distribution. Light enough to be an host running virtualbox (or vmware player) and then a linux virtual machine of choice on it. Occasionally I could be in needs of running a windows distribution.
The reason why I would like to do this is that I am a developer. I found much convenient to prepare my development environment and run it from machine to machine. Rather than reinstalling a distribution and set it up each time I buy a new laptop.
Do you think it's possible ? The alternative could be to make a kind of linux image and install on a brand new PC, but I don't know how to do that and what are the downside of it.

I am running windows 7 with virtualbox and ubuntu 10.04 as the guestos and the mouse used to work, but now it doesn't. I don't have guest additions and I can't get it because I can't login. Virtual box says the mouse is captured but it isn't working. I have the latest version of virtualbox.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

I want to implement bandwidth shaping policy in a virtual environment. So i have 2mbps link, which i want to distribute it among Email,http(s),ssh,... and some other traffic. I want to do this in a virtual environment, for testing purpose. I want to run this script on a virtualbox virtual machine, which has ubuntu installed on it. and then use that as the router.
(a) is there any software that could simulate email,http,... traffic so that i could test it?
(b) my second question is (though not related to networking) how do i set a (virtual) machine as a router? or is it even possible?

I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.
I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)
I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.
I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

I just installed Win7 (I need it for work -.-") and, of couse, it installed its boot loader and I can't boot F13 any longer. The question is, how do I restore GRUB from a F13 live installation media without destroying Win7?
I remeber trying something like that a couple of years before when I had the same issue:
Unfortunatelly, that doesn't work and at the next boot I am stuck with Windows again how to restore grub from a F13 live CD?

Fedora 13 is in and only missing the ghc broken deficiencies
yum --skip-broken update
works to avoid the deficiencies
Question: qt 4.6.2 comes with Fedora 13 and is regularly updated with yum update
I've looked everywhere to find out where QTDIR is set wrongly to qt3.3

I am a linux newbie, I have messed with it some (backtrack) but I don't know a whole lot. I am going to networking security and I am in a linux class now. We are using fedora. On my laptop, I want to triple boot. Right now I have just 1 partition, with windows 7 ultimate x64 installed. I want to triple boot windows 7, windows xp x64, and fedora 12 x64. I am getting ready to format my laptop now with xp installing first. Then I will do windows 7, and then lastly fedora. Do I need to do anything special while installing fedora last? I have a 300gb hard drive, and I plan on having 100 for xp, 150 for 7, and the remainder for fedora.

I am a major noob to FC12. I need to install Windows 7 Pro and FC12 dual boot. I first used the windows CD to create 1 250 Gig partition on my 500 Gig HD. Of course windows created the 100 MB system partition. I left the rest unpartitioned. Windows installed okay. I then booted to the KDE FC12 Live CD and installed FC12. I specified to use the Free Space remaining on the HD. The installation finished but now only boots into FC12 and does not prompt me for the OS I want to boot.

I have read a number of threads relating to the bootmgr missing issue but I can't seem to apply the fixes to my specific situation, any assistance is most welcome; my details below. I have two HDDs
1 x IDE HDD running Fedora 12 which is allowing me to write this,
1 x SATA HDD which has win7 premium 64-bit, and up until the Fedora 12 instal, was the only OS.
Grub gives me two options for boot, they are: Fedora Other When I select 'Other' I get hte message :BOOTMGR MISSING My assumption is WIn7 located on my SATA HDD = Other what I might do to allow Win7 to boot.

I'm trying to dual boot F14 along side of Win7 and I'm running into partitioning errors - "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks" I used the Win7 Disk Management to shrink the C: drive by 100G, and the Disk Utility in F14 shows the unallocated space. Here is what the current layout looks like:
--210Mb bootable (sda1)
--168Gb (sda2) --Win7
--105Gb unallocated -- Future home to F14
--31Gb extended (sda 3) -- not sure what this is used for
--31Gb (sda 5) -- Lenovo drivers
--16Gb (sda 4) -- Lenovo restore
Am I running into the partition limit I have been reading about? If so, is there a way to get around this? I really don't want to delete the partitions yet.

I just installed win 7 and now can't install fedira 13 on the partition that i made for it on the same drive. The problem is that after installation of win 7 i lost the ability to boot form cd. In bios i still have cd set up to boot first and drive second, but win 7 did something that overrides bios set up. I even tried Esc for boot menu, then i select to boot form cd, but it still boots in windows.

I installed Fedora 12 on my computer using the install DVD and that worked fine. However, upon booting up, I was dismayed to find that all I could access was the command line where it says:
[root@localhost~]#
So naturally I went searching and found that the problem was that no desktop environment had been installed. So I went to try to install KDE since I really like the way its screenshots worked and a number of my friends recommended it. I hooked my computer into my router(since I'm finding wireless on my machine is going to be tricky right now) and used yum to try to install the desktop. I found the appropriate code at [URL] to install with yum. I promptly did and allowed yum to do its thing, downloading and installing all the necessary files after which I went through the steps on the website.
The problem comes now, when I try to boot my new desktop environment from the command line. After entering "startx" I get the following error:
xauth: creating nw authority file /root/serverauth.1250
xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): no server "/usr/bin//X" in PATH
Use the -- option or make sure that /usr/bin is in your path and that "/usr/bin/X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display.
Possible server names include:
Xorg Common X server for most displays
Xvfb Vertual frame buffer
Xfake kdrive-based virtual fram buffer
Xnest X server nested in a window on another x server
xephyr kdrive-based nested X server
xinit: Server error.
How to get the startx command to work. Or maybe I'm not even supposed to use startx...

I had a dual boot working fine with XP and F12 on two physical drives, all was well. Last night my friend helped upgrade my system, I now have 3 drives (20gig F12) (60gig XP) and (320gig Win7) now the PC only loads Win7 as I think my friend told bios to boot from 320gig. Has anybody here got experience with triple boot from 3 drives? Here is my guess, tell bios to boot from other drive and add Win7 to grub. Not sure how but that's my guess. Also what worries me is that win7 does not "see" the other two drives.

I installed Fedora13 to dualboot w/ my windows 7. I quickly found out that I don't care for fedora. I was referred to Ubuntu, and put Ubuntu 10.04 on in VirtualBox. Lo and behold, I like Ubuntu a WHOLE lot more! So, I promptly went to Disk Manager (in win7) and deleted the Fedora partitions (told you i'm a noob). Of course that was a poor choice, and I was only able to get my computer to boot again by reinstalling f13. neat.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
[code]....
SO what i was thinking is go back to Disk Manager, delete partitions sda 3,4, & 5 (the linux ones), then reboot from the Ubuntu live disk? But I don't know what the sdb1 partition is?

I've recently tried installing Fedora 14 on a HP z600 workstation, but I'm running into major stability issues.
I can successfully boot fedora 14 from the live-cd and can perform basic tasks from the terminal and within gnome. However, I sometimes experience hard-crashes when I am browsing the web with firefox. In fact, I can pretty consistently cause this by downloading a relatively large file (~100MB) with firefox. Interestingly though, I don't experience any problems when doing the same with curl.
Furthermore, I run into the same issues when I install fedora 14. Worse, the system seems corrupted when it recovers after rebooting... sometimes failing to make it to the login screen.
I'm suspicious of the network driver, but also of the memory. I have performed the memory test included on the live-cd, but it reports no issues. This may be so, but from previous experience with computers, I don't trust memory tests to detect all memory issues.
Ubuntu is similarly problematic; vista appears fine, with limited testing.
*Hard-crash: system locks up for 5 or so seconds, followed by a black screen, and then reboots. There are no error messages displayed.
EDIT: As a point of reference, Fedora 11 seems to be a stable for me.

I've been learning linux for a while now with half an eye on making a career out of it in future. One sizeable gap in my knowledge at the moment is networking. Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.
Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
