Does anyone know how well (or if) the Creative X-FI xtreme audio Expresscard is supported by ALSA?Unfortunately it isn't even on the list of cards at all on their site. I know that there are two versions of the card, the earlier version was silver and fit a 54mm expresscard slot, and the later version was black and was 34mm. As far as I know they both use the old CA010x chipset (the same as the old Creative Audigy 2 Cardbus card), but I have no idea if that driver in the kernel will even pick it up.This onboard sound on my laptop is just driving me nuts anymore and I need something else.My old Audigy 2 Cardbus card I had for my old laptop was great, but it's just that, a cardbus card.
I've recently installed Linux Mint 8 64-bit on my computer and getting my sound card to work. I've been searching around the internet for solutions but I know next to nothing about computer audio.
My sound card is a PCI Express Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. Came with my computer. Told it uses the SB Audigy chipset. Using the onboard audio is not an option. The card shows up in Sound Preferences under the Hardware tab, but I cannot get sound from it. Here's what they told me to do:
Install the karmic alsa backports through the Terminal Install hidden Level 5 updates to update the kernel Disable every audio device except the SB card (the others are onboard and HDMI) Check volume levels in alsamixer, PulseAudio Device Chooser and Volume Control I also tried to install the OpenAudio driver (not sure, will double check), which crashed Linux every time I try to activate it.
Recently i put a DAC connected to the CL X-FI board via the SPDIF interface. Result is i can listen only one channel, the left one (hedaphone) while using the xmms, audacious.
The thing is that i'm able to listen both channels if i use the VLC configured with the same output, that is hw:2,4.
Trying to make the switch to Fedora. For the most part, everything seems to be working fine so far. When I first logged in, I got a message about a kernel crash (with the red siren) but I was not able to send the error report. I have since updated Fedora with the latest updates and have not seen this again yet.
The problem is that I have no sound. I have unmuted the sound in the sound preferences, and it appears to be correctly detected in the hardware tab as:

My motherboard is an MSI P6N Diamond with onboard sound.

I've followed some instructions that I've found searching this forum and what I've concluded was that my audio plays only from the HDMI port of the VGA... Changing the settings around to use the SoundBlaster card does nothing. I've installed pavucontrol and setting the HDMI port to profile Off does nothing. When enabled the bar under the levels seems to play music. (It shows activity) But when I send the stream to the Sound Blaster the bar stays 100% and doesn't do anything. (no activity and no sound). I can't verify that the HDMI port actually plays out audio. I'm new to Fedora and linux all together. I've tried Fedora in the past F11 I think but that's all.

i just installed a new Ubuntu 10.10, but i have no sound at all. I google-d for my problem, but i cant find any fix. In sound preferences - everything look great and working - there is my X-fi Xtreme audio CA0110-IBG, and i can choose how many channels to use, but when i go to test button, there are no sound from any channel. I got 5.1 sound system, and i use Flexijack for mic. Im confused, because everything looks like working - the system recognises my sound card, but there no sound at all. I tried to kill pulseaudio, but it not help me.
yesterday I upgraded of my ubuntu release from 10.04 to 10.10 and now, when I plug my mp3 creative zen player it doesn't work.The same player works very well with 10.04 and I can upload my mp3s directly from rythmnbox using drag&drop.Here my /var/log/syslog

I just got rid of pulseaudio because it breaks in so many different situations. I've switched to Alsa, and all of my sound is working except in mpd. It seems like I have to set audio_output in /etc/mpd.conf. Here is my config file:

And I hear the song play for less than a second before the audio_output driver is closed. There really aren't any error messages printed explaining why it's not working. I've also tried "oss", "esd" and "ao" for the audio_output type, and none of them work.
I have an issue that I have been trying to fix for the last one week and failing. I am working on an IP phone where I have two Audio codecs -
CARD 0: IDT HDA Code for the Handset CARD 1: NXP USB Codec for the Speakerphone
I can play music on each of them using command line commands. But when I use ALSA APIs, I can only play music on CARD 1 (Speaker phone) and not on CARD 0 at all.
The code I have for CARD 1 is: snd_pcm_open(&phandle, "plughw:1,0", SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK, 0);
I have all the other API calls as well.. and I am using PCM STREAM RATE = 16000, Channels = 1 for initializing. BUt when I change the devide to: "plughw:0,0" -- I get no audio on the handset.
The problem is that banshee mutes sound for other apps like flash, the solution is to select alsa for the devices in audio preferences... but don't have that in the list, only "internal audio analog stereo".
This wasn't a problem until i made some updates and got broken sound, to fix it i used the AlsaUpgrade script. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 by the way.
I've recently encountered a sound issue and I recently installed the nvidia gt220 in my box and was thrilled at how well it worked with hdmi until I tried to use the audio. I updated my alsa and went into the alsamixer and it does detect my gt220. I unmuted all spdif and tested the sound and with success the sound test works. I know the card and device numbers that work with the audio but now sure where to make changes so it will default to that device instead of the onboard audio that it seems to try to use now. I am running lucid 10.04.
I know very little about Debian but have an ASUS T100TA tablet which runs fairly well under Debian 8 Jessie (kernel 3.16.0-4-686-pae). I used the following guide successfully to activate the wireless but am having trouble with the audio section of it.URL...
First, I went here and downloaded the file called 'NEW T100_B.state'.URL....
Then I copied it to /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and ran 'alsactl restore' which reported that i had no soundcards.I then downloaded and expanded linux-firmware-master-intel.tar.gz but am not sure what to do with these files. I copied them to /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-686-pae/kernel/drivers/firmware as they are specific for this kernel, but they don't seem to be doing anything and 'alsactl restore' still tells me that I don't have a soundcard. What do I need to do with these files?
I am having a really annoying problem here. Every time when I use my Computer while listening to music, or watching a video, I get some sort of crackling in my Audio. For example, playing a mp3 with Rhythmbox (or Banshee or Totem, doesn't matter really) while browsing the web is just horrible, every time I scroll down the page (Mouse wheel or keyboard) I get that noise. Just listening to the music while not touching the Computer works just fine. It does not seem to be CPU related, my reason being: I can max out my CPU, rendering a 3D graphic and still have crystal clear sound, but browsing down some big file-folder at the same time will distort my audio.
The same goes with games which are a bit on the high CPU side, like Nexuiz with high graphic settings: No sound problems at all. I am using my on-board sound, which lspci lists as VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10), pure ALSA setup, no pulse/esd or anything of the like installed. Switched to unstable to see if a more up2date kernel or updated alsa would do the trick, it didn't! I am running Debian Unstable - 2.6.37-2-amd64 kernel, Gnome-Desktop. Here's what I did to make my sound work in the first place, since my squeeze didn't recognize my sound-setup out of the box:

I've installed both fluidsynth and qsynth, but get this error everytime I run qsynth. I'm trying to use my m-audio keyrig 49 just to practice playing the piano. I don't really care about having a whole DAW and whatever, I just want to play my keyboard. Maybe there is a better way than qsynth? Also, this happens:

I don't know that it has to do with my qsynth problem or not. I just thought I'd throw it in just in case it does. Also, xmms recognizes my keyboard in the alsa preferences, where the mixer device is.
I have some microphone problems. I can't record anything. (I'm using openSUSE 11.3)
My sound card was detected almost correctly (at least the chip-set was i think). I have an Asrock motherboard (k7upgrade880, with a Southbridge: VIA 8237 | Audio: CMedia CMI9761 6 channel AC'97.

But i have NO audio playback problems - movies, games, music all play well. And the Microphone guid has a broken link
I tried to change my 50-sound.conf file (i read it on a forum, I'm new to linux troubleshooting) from this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx to this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx position_fix=1
But that did not work either. I did not get any sound with the last line.
I have alsa 1.0.22 on my system. I can plug in my pcmcia card into my laptop, and my computer register's it, but when I plug in my microdock, alsa still thinks it's an EMU 1010, which is just the basic one, and I have a 1616, so none of my inputs register anything at all, so I can't record audio. The only thing that seems to be working perfectly or at all, are the audio jack on the pc card, the headphone jack on the microdock, and the stereo mini out for speakers on the microdock. I think it's odd that the headphone and stereo outs work on the microdock, but I can't input any audio. how to get the rest of my microdock to work?
I posted my question on Linx.com, but have not received an answer after 75 viewers to my question: Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up! In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I spent a few days trying to make audio work on my TV connected via HDMI to a PC. The speaker test used by the sound preferences was dead, as was MPlayer. I managed to find a solution for MPlayer, giving the option "-ao alsa:device=hdmi", as specified in this article:So, basically ALSA can see all my devices. This is the output of aplay -l:Quote:

When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.
All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I've just gotten round to updating the sound. The ALSA built in is too old to have support for the X-Fi chip used in the Forte so I built and installed ALSA 10.0.22.1. On reboot, it detects the card as X-Fi Titanium series (as expected), but when I run the test

I'm not sure if there are any ALSA configuration files left lying around from my old sound card (Intel HDA audio) and I've forgotton what they might be called or where they would be.
Can someone tell me the locations of the various ALSA configuration files? Or is this a known thing about the Forte? (Maybe the card has the front two channels wired differently or something) Or maybe there's a configuration option I've missed.
how can I check, if they are supported in kernel 2.6.30? I looked at alsa page, and no information I have seen there. oldcpu, as I understund you, is not so important what audio chip is, but it is important to determine what hardware audio codec a device has, right? I'm trying to get mplayer to recognize ALSA and/or pulse audio server, preferably both. On my laptop, mplayer works fine -- mplayer -ao help lists oss, alsa, pulse, and jack, among others. But here's the output of mplayer -ao help on the computer I'm trying to set up:

ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?
