Fedora :: F12 AMD64 - Updater Does Not Require Authentication
Mar 24, 2010
I've been away from Fedora for a couple of releases but just installed F12 amd64. My updater doesn't require authentication to update the system and any user can install updates. Is this "normal" for F12?

I recently upgraded our ldap server to Ubuntu 10.04.1 (64-bit). In the past, I've been able to use smbldap-useradd to create new ldap and samba users but am having problems since the upgrade. For starters, /etc/smbldap-tools was empty, which caused smbldap-useradd to bomb out with configuration-related errors. After following some tips on how to create the config files, I've gotten as far as being able to run smbldap-useradd but am now getting this error:
Error: modifications require authentication at /usr/share/perl5/smbldap_tools.pm line 1187, <DATA> line 466.
I've got the correct credentials set up in /etc/smbldap-tools/smbldap_bind.conf. I can login and make changes just fine through phpldapadmin with the same credentials, but smbldap-useradd just doesn't want to work.

I recently switched my server runlevel to 3 and I don't notice any updating of any kind going on, does the updater run in runlevel 3? If it is possible, how do I do it? Is it a service that I need to start? If so, how?

All of a sudden the Software Updater on my FC7 box tells me that it can't get updates, because there's no internet connection. That's not the reason since I can browse the web just fine, and the Samba server is working fine. I thought it could be a configuration change on my router, but I don't see it. I am not sure what port the Software Updater wants to use.

I have Fedora 10 and I'd been holding out on updating to 11 and now 12 is out. It popped up asking me to update so I decided to finally update. When I come back to it, it said /boot was running low on memory and that I should delete an old kernel to free up space. Well shouldn't the updater have deleted fedora 10? Sorry I'm new to all this linux stuff. What should I do now?

I am in Fedora 12KDE and just tried "sudo yum update" from terminal because the graphical updater isn't working. I got a list of files to be updated, but in the things it wants to install as dependencies it lists "gnome-menus" and "gnome-packagekit". If I am in the KDE version of Fedora, why am I getting things that require gnome and how do I figure out which things those are to uninstall them? Did I use the wrong command for the update?

I just today installed Fedora 15 Gnome 3 64-bit and I can't get the software updater to download anything. I click on the updater and it runs and starts. The status label says its downloading package lists but nothing shows up in the window. When I check the system monitor it says the updater is sleeping. I can't get it to continue.
Also my network connection runs very slow. I'm on wireless and I only have two to three bars, but when I boot into windows 7 the wireless runs fine on two to three bars. Is there a some settings I can do to fix this? How to configure Fedora 15 wireless to run normally?

I am coming from Windows XP Pro, on the same machine (and where I am writing this post from) so the internet clearly works on XP. On F13, the eth0 connection is activated and the drivers for the NIC chip were installed with the OS. The NIC is Intel Pro/100 VE. The problem that occurs is that the system updater (in GNOME) can access the internet, and installed a bunch of updates after installing the OS. I know it can get to the internet because the updates worked and in the System Monitor, I can see both uploading and downloading occurring during the updates. Now the problem is that when I open FF, I can't seem to get to pages, and I get the usual FF error (pic -- [URL]). However, I CAN get to [URL] as well as [URL] , but I cannot access several other subdomains on fedoraproject.org . I also cannot get to any other page online, ([URL] for example).

I tried to connect to a WIFI require WEP key. I make the WEP key myself. I wrote it down on a piece of paper myself. My PSP can connect to the network, my XP can connect to the network. But same machine, my Fedora 11 can not connect to the network. As long as I tried to connect to the network, network manager just keep asking me for the WEP key. I put in the WEP key and tired out every option the network manage offer(WEP40/128bit, share key, etc),

I'm upgrading my duo core to a quad core. I don't have to change mobo or anything, as both are 775 socket. I don't have anything valuable in my current install of Fedora 14, so I don't mind a clean install if it'll save me a headache with drivers later. But, if it's absolutely unnecessary, I'll skip the reinstall altogether. I'm switching my duo core (E8*** series, can't remember which) for the Q6600.

I'm trying to run some updates that require xulrnner to be updated. It appears I have xulrunner for f14 and f15 installed and the f14 one is in conflict with the update. I don't know what xulrunner is for and I'm hesitant to just do a yum remove of the f14 one as I've learned that I can cripple or kill my system if I do this to the wrong programs.

I was impressed to be asked on Fedora 10 if I want to upgrade to Fedora 11 but the first time I tried I had this error:
Not enough space in /boot/upgrade to download install.img.
My boot partition is 99MB and AFAIK that is not unusual so I tried tidying up a bit, uninstalling all except 2 kernels, and now have about 80MB for whatever needs to be downloaded in /boot/upgrade. But I get the same error. I can fix this by using wired instead of wireless networking but I want to know for planning purposes (next time I create a boot partition) how much space is required?
$ ls -l /boot/upgrade
total 21594
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18985802 2009-06-03 00:02 initrd.img
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3035056 2009-06-03 00:02 vmlinuz
Should I delete these? It looks like they might be left over from last time but I assume preupgrade knows what is junk and what isn't.

I've tried to install FEdora 15 using the Fedora 15 DVD for i686 architecture. However, after the step where I chose the setup for GRUB boot options, I got this error: "Some of your repositories require network access but networking could not be setup" (or something similar). Then I only had the option to exit the installer, but after reboot there was no GRUB and I have no means even to boot back to Windows.
How to install Fedora without networking or is Fedora the only distro so messed up that this can't be done? I've tried the Live CD/USB version but that version has no C compiler to allow me to install networking drivers after install completes. Now I was told to try the full DVD, by the full DVD managed to mess up my computer completely.

It was a long time since my last post on this forum. The reason for this was that since FC7 I've moved to Debian Etch and then to Ubuntu, but now I'm back trying FC12 amd64 on my machine and seen how it changed.Almost everything is going well until now. After almost two years I see that a great development was made to build and gui to yum, but synaptic is still superior, imho.
Well, as I said, everything is going well with one exception: the *.tar.gz files.
Doesn't matter if I use the gui or the cli. If I try to compress or decompress any file to tar.gz it fails with the error message bellow. All other file types work perfectly.
Code:
/bin/gtar: Child returned status 1
/bin/gtar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
As I said, I'm running FC12 amd64. Gnome environment.

After burning the DVD of F11 for AMD64, I boot from it. After some choices, instead of going to read from the DVD it connects to the internet and tries to download packages. After some time it fails to read and goes into a loop for trying to read. If I interrupt this and skip the network section, it reports it can't connect to the internet. Why does it want to connect to the internet anyway when I've booted from DVD ? It didn't do that on x86.

I am completely new to Linux, so forgive me for possibly asking idiotic questions. I downloaded Fedora 11 through BitTorrent, and burned the ISO images to CD using the Active@ ISO burner. I then booted using the "low display driver" option, since the computer I am attempting to install on is fairly old. I also added the following options, which were the only way I could even get into Anaconda:
no-hlt
all-generic-ide
acpi=off
However, after loading Anaconda, selecting the "Use entire drive" option on the hard disk screen, it told me I needed a network connection for some software repositories. I have read that software repositories are meant to be downloaded after the installation, and I have not chosen to install any repositories at all. Why does it require a network connection to install from the CD?

I need to make a choice on what authentication protocol I want to use for Authentication and Authorization. I was looking at Radius and then literature suggested that Diameter was a better protocol. Keep in mind I need this on a hetrogeneous setup ( linux & windows together). Diameter seemed like a good fit until I discovered that the open source code no longer seems to be maintained ( C/C++).
I was also looking at Kerberos as an option though there is alot overhead with the server. SSL/TLS or EAP? I am looking for simple but secure and am new at the security protocols.

I have installed a base 5.2 server. I updated the network proxies in preferences and also updated the values for internet access. I can't get the package updater to work. I can use "yum update" and this work but I don't want to update everything. I have allowed a full update and one or more of them is affecting an IOZone test I am running to fiber storage. If I run the test to the base install, it completes OK. If I run the test after all the updates, the test fails with file writes and test files diaappearing. In any case, I would like to use the software updated hoping this will allow me to selectively add the updates. There is about 400 updates that get applied. I am currently getting the 5.3 image and will do and install with that to see if the test runs.
