Fedora Installation :: Upgrade Of AMD64 To F11 Tries To Download?

Jul 1, 2009

After burning the DVD of F11 for AMD64, I boot from it. After some choices, instead of going to read from the DVD it connects to the internet and tries to download packages. After some time it fails to read and goes into a loop for trying to read. If I interrupt this and skip the network section, it reports it can't connect to the internet. Why does it want to connect to the internet anyway when I've booted from DVD ? It didn't do that on x86.

Ubuntu Installation :: Finding A Copy Of 11.04 Desktop Beta1 Amd64 To Download?

Apr 29, 2011

I am looking for a copy of 11.04 desktop beta1 amd64 to download. This is running on an x120e. Beta1 installs and works but freezes every few hours. Beta2 almost fully installs but pops up with a friendly error that says "installation has failed" with not much helpful in the syslogs. 11.04 Final kernel panics half way through installation.

At this point, I've tried almost everything, so I'm just trying to get back on Beta1 to get stable because this is my work computer. There are a lot of links on google, but every single one went dead as soon as final was released. After that, I will work on trying to get 11.04 final installed properly.

Fedora Installation :: Full Install F11 From Upgrade Files Download

Jul 29, 2009

I was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.

So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.

Debian Configuration :: Find & Download I386 Packages On An Amd64 System?

Oct 30, 2010

I have a computer with internet access with amd64 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny). I have another computer with NO internet access with i386 architecture running Debian stable (Lenny).I want to download some packages for the i386 computer using the amd64 computer. So far, the only way I can see to do this is to use dpkg-architecture to temporarily change to i386 on the internet computer, run aptitude with the download-only option to retrieve the packages I need with all suitable dependencies, then switch the internet computer back over to amd64.

I can't imagine I'm the only person who ever needed to do this, and yet I've had no luck finding any advice. The method I described seems rather awkward - is there a more elegant solution?

I apologize to the membership, I realize now the absurdity of this subject. Having now studied the online repository search functions closer, I see it appears packages are automatically retrieved with all necessary dependencies. As such, it is not necessary to use apt and its various functions to do the job.

Was running the upgrade through the manager this morning and the download got about 3/4 of the way and froze up making the system unresponsive I left this for an hour to see if it would resolve its self but no luck so as the installation hadn't begun I hit the power button. BIG mistake now when I try boot to 9.10 it hits a black screen with white ubuntu logo much like 9.10 but no loading bar. it just hangs at this now. I am currently posting this from a live usb I made from an ISO of 10.4 i downloaded on my girl friends windows machine. Is it possible to either fix the 9.10 installation or update the files on the 9.10 installation to 10.4 from the live disk(I have the option to make a 9.10 live disk if needed)?

Debian :: Upgrade System-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 Failed / Get It To Work?

Sep 8, 2011

I use the automatic upgrades - they hardly ever cause a problem... until now.

I just applied this upgrade (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) and a restart was required (normal under when upgrading the image).
After the restart my SIP phone software didn't startup - didn't even get any errors in the log file...
So I checked the "System Monitor" to see if the process was running but not displayed... the System Monitor generates a core dump...

I hope there will be another update to solve this really quickly.... not sure what else is broken. Firefox is still working and so is Skype.

Ubuntu Installation :: "Download Package Files Only" For Upgrade?

May 12, 2010

I want to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, and Update Manager is telling me that it will take several hours to download 1.5GB of updated packages on my relatively slow connection. Because of the use of the machine, I don't really want to leave it downloading and updating for several hours.

Is there a way that I can download the required packages to a cache, maybe over several sessions, and then separately kick off the installation process once everything is available?

Synaptic has a tickbox to "Download package files only" which does a similar thing to my request for normal package upgrades, but I don't see a tickbox like that in Update Manager when doing a major version upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Canon MX Printer Installation On Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64

May 20, 2010

Canon MX320, MX330, MX860 printer installation on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit. I am sure Ubuntu Lucid is similar. Once I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit I found that getting a Canon Pixma MX printer installed was not going to be easy. So I thought it help others if I posted my experience here. To pull this off you will need both the Debian package, (.deb), and the source package from either

Canon Europe: [URL]... Or Canon Australia: [URL]... NOTE: The only reason to get the source is to access the ppd files. They are in the Debian package but it is a lot more work to walk newbies through unpacking the .deb. Since there are errors in the source code it makes impossible to compile a driver. Therefore, you will need to install the 32bit Debian package and force the architecture, then add the correct printer driver from the ppd file in the source package. While these instructions worked for me there are a few assumption I make which mat affect your outcome. My MX860 has a wireless network connection.

In other words I have no idea if this will or will not work on a USB attached printer. (If someone would be kind enough to post back if they get that configuration working that would be cool.) The other assumption is that the general reader is relatively new to Lunix and the command line interface. The commands were cut and pasted from my working kconsole, so they should work for anyone. Here we go:........

when I tried to download a installation DVD of F10 for my new thinkPad T500 laptop. The architecture of the processor should be i686 and I downloaded the DVD image Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso. I understand i686 has backward compatability with i386. But i have following questoins:

(1) why we don't have an installation for i686?

(2) If I install the i386 package, do I get performance downgrades?

(3) Also, why the live DVD has this file called F10-i686-Live.iso?

(4) Finally, I always get message like "Warning: Cannot convert string "nil2" to type FontStruct

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Amd64 Installation Freeze?

May 31, 2011

I have recently added a couple of HDDs to my system and wanted to try 11.04 on one, so installed on my smallest empty hard drive. The installation went fine, but upon booting to that drive the system froze at the 'Verifying DMI pool data' screen, and didn't boot. I thought it could have been that drive, so I tried installing on my 500gb drive which had 10.10 running on it. After backing up files etc., I tried a fresh install of 11.04 on this drive, but with the same result, same freeze at the same screen.

During this process I noticed that the Live USB I am using has been quite glitchy (eg. selecting a menu option and it hangs for about a minute before any action), which makes me suspect that it could be the image I'm using. I've downloaded it a couple of times just in case it was a bad image (has happened to me before), but that hasn't fixed it. Both times I used the image in the Internode mirror repository, [URL]...
