eCouldnyone help me out to put the right configuration parameters in the grub.conf file so I can enable or disable the Fedora Logo on boot time ?
Currently I'm seeing 3 bars being filled on boot time. I need to get back the Fedora Logo during the boot time process.
How can I do this?
I have just installed ssh-server in my Ubuntu 10.04, and really want to know how to enable/disable it and I also want to be sure if the changes will take effect after the next boot or not, and how to do that?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI got a problem. At the day of New YEar, i got a virus, that my antivirus big time. When i started Windows, i instantly got BSoD. I managed to format my HDD, and now i wanna try to install Ubuntu. It has been working before, but after an update, I can't get further then the logo in the boot process. Now, I don't have any OS. Ubuntu & Kubuntu both just gives me the logo/loading screen, and then goes black..
windows 7 also just goies to "Starting windows"... Prretty annoying.
Think i got 3 GB RAM, 950gb HDD, and 2x 128 MB ATI X-Fire video.
I have currently installed the ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal edition through the wubi installer alongside windows 7. I wanted to just check out what the kde environment had to offer differently from the default desktop environment which is gnome unity environment.
I installed the kde environment using some sudo command given by google. After using kde environment for a few hours, I just began to feel, I liked the default gnome environment better (in classic mode) as compared to kde as I was more used to the former.
So I uninstalled kde with another sudo command which I got by googling. At the final step of the uninstallation, I admit I am not sure whether what I did was right or wrong. There was sth related to 'daemon' that popped up eventually and I chose yes for that and kde was uninstalled successfully or atleast that's what I thought.
But to my horror, when i tried rebooting my laptop to ubuntu gnome, the blue coloured kubuntu logo was popping once again and I had to go back to the synaptic package manager and delete sth called the 'plymouth' package to remove the kubuntu logo.
Now after doing all these, when I tried booting ubuntu, I was not able to get to the gnome login screen. The screen was just stuck with the ubuntu logo and the process bar blinking and gnome never started.
When I pressed the Esc key to check out what was happening from behind, I could see that some processes were being checked and there was a [ok] after everything and there was a [FAIL] next to "starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon". And the terminal screen ended with "stopping system V run level compatibility". I am not sure if this might be the root cause of blocking the boot-up. But I couldn't get a screenshot of those intermittent terminal screens as I was not in a position to type in any commands such as fbgrab which can be used to grab a screenshot of the terminal screen.
Eventually after intense googling, I figured how to manually configure gnome to start up. I pressed the Cnt + Alt +F1 as soon as the white ubuntu logo popped up and after logging in into my ubuntu account through the terminal interface, I typed in the following things:
And then voila I got the gnome login screen. I temporarily heaved a sigh of relief. (by the way I saw something flash quickly on the terminal moments before it went to the gnome login screen like "you need not init this way or sth"..I just couldn't catch sight of it properly as it flashed only for a few moments)
But I am not satisfied. Obviously there might be a way to set this problem right isn't it? Kindly someone pls throw some light on this issue. I want gdm to be automatically activated during boot. Its a big pain to manually configure it everytime I boot. Is it possible to do a windows restore to set the ubuntu right? But I saw in some forums mention that something called the boot.ini will botch up if we perform a system restore in win 7.
Method that does not involve uninstalling ubuntu and reinstalling it. This is because I have done a lot of tweaks, optimisations and installed lot of apps in it. I do not have a system image backup as well. So it will be a nightmare to do all these things over and over again. I'm having trouble with the initial white logo splash in 9.10. Apparently without exception the boot process stops during the white logo segment. I don't think it freezes because I can turn NumLock on and off.
If I edit the menu entry and remove "quiet splash" from the "linux ..." line the computer boots perfectly fine without any errors. How can I diagnose this?

I am working on shortening my boot time on my laptop, so I am using bootchart to help me pinpoint the slow areas. So far, I got it down to about 40 seconds (from 2:33! -- dosfsck was running every boot). I don't use LVM (I am dual booting with Windows and it's hard enough with static partitions), and I have tried to disable LVM in every way I can imagine except uninstalling it (system-config-kickstart depends on it), but I still see it being initialized at boot time. How do I prevent the system from even considering LVM during boot??

Ever since the kernel update to 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, my boot process hangs at about startx time. I boot cleanly at runlevel 3 in either this or the previous 2.6.33.8 kernel. If I execute startx from here (in either kernel), the system hangs at the same place. During the early troubleshooting, I read in another thread (250929) about installing xorg-x11-drv-catalyst, which I did using yum. This led to the failure of the 2.6.33 kernel; yum remove did not fix this. I have carefully followed the instructions in the fglrx HOWTO (updated a week ago by Hlingler) as they relate to a PAE kernel (including reinstalling mesa-libGL), and that fixed earlier difficulties. Hence, I felt I needed a new thread.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem with my networking under Ubuntu. When I first log in to Gnome both my network adapters are listed as "disconnected" in the network manager applet. If I right click on the notification icon and disable networking, then wait a few seconds and re enable it, it works fine.
It's happening consistently with Maverick although it seemed only temperamental with Lucid. I did a fresh Maverick install to see if it would help but it hasn't.
It's the onboard network sockets on a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7. I have two ports but I only use one, it doesn't seem to matter which I use. It's connected via gigabit ethernet to a Netgear router. It works fine in Windows 7 (dual boot).
It looks as though something's not quite "ready" when gnome first launches. The light on the router for the cable is off at first, and only comes on after a few seconds. It's DHCP. Same thing happened on the live USB stick (just before the isntaller) and disable/reenable made it work.

A.I have long boot up time.I think it's because of the eth0 network search which I don't use.I have an intel wireless 5300 card running.How can I speed up the boot time, i.e. disable or change the eth0 at boot, the searching?

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.
Any ideas where I am going wrong?
These days I see the disk check that is popping up when my Ubuntu is booting up quite frequently. It says 'press C to cancel' but C (or Shift C or CTRL C or CTRL ALT C) does not have any effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots but again ends up in the vicious loop of disk check. How to bypass it? When I need to critically enter the desktop for an urgent pressing info waiting for 20 to 25 minutes disk check is kind of difficult.

proaudio apps with low-latency having gstreamer enabled is a problem. this is because ( i think ) that my crappy intel-hda (STAC9200) only has one sub-device, while many other cards have multiple.
so when gstreamer is there, i will get more xruns, and a nasty message in dmesg, something along the lines of "intel-hda switching to polling mode". overall performance of the card will suck. BUT! if gstreamer is NOT there, i can run low-latency(2ms) with pretty much no xruns(jackd). the only time i get the odd one is if i am switching drum banks in a wine VST.
well, i remove pulseaudio when i install Fedora, gstreamer doesn't work properly after that, you can't use rhythmbox, or anything. but you will get much better latencies and generally the card is very useful. ie: i can manipulate many sounds/samples/synths in realtime, or actually record in ardour with a decent load...
Sorry but I'm a new user and would like to know how to enable/disable firewall. I have tried to open a port up on my firewall but, for some reason that didn't work. I have found these command in another thread: $ sudo /sbin/chkconfig iptables off
$ sudo /sbin/service iptables stop
I assume this is to disable the fire wall. How do I enable it once I'm finish running my program.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen installing Samba and Webmin I use the application "system-config-services" or (if it is easier to find for you that way) menu->Administration->Service management. In this application I can start the services I need (nmb, smb, webmin), but the enable/disable at startup setting is greyed out... Even when I start the application as root it still gives me no possibility to configure the services to start up on boot. This should be possible. It works this way in Fedora 13 and Fedora 14, so why not in Fedora 15?
Before reporting a bug, I would like to ask if other users here have the same problem (and -if possible- a solution)... In the mean tim I guess it is back to the old way of configurating services - sigh..
[edit] I tried to remove the [SOLVED] from the title, but the forum software does not seems to allow me to do that... I thought it was solved by installing xinetd, but I was happy a bit too early. I still have no answer for this problem.

When I start either of them, the respective logo jumps up and down below the cursor for more than 10 seconds after the program has finished loading. Is there an easy fix to this small but annoying issue? I run Squeeze with KDE on a Thinkpad R61.

Using Fedora 14-64, new install, 185 Opteron x 2 gig ram, sata hard drives formatted Ext4.However, in my home directory I have a folder for all my digital photos of which I have more than 20,000, and in another folder I have images and clipart of which I have almost 8,000. That is a lot of read only access to a significant number of files in my home directory.
How can I tell Fedora to not update the LAST ACCESS TIME of those files (specifically images) that will never actually be changed other than just being read. I want to leave that feature enabled for the rest of my home directory. I am trying t; improve my disk performance in Nautilus because whenever I access the folders with my images the system literally slows to a crawl and sometimes even the mouse stops working for several minutes until Nautilus has finished having its heart attack.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire netbook with 1GB RAM and 1.6 GHz dual-core 32-bit x86 chips. The KPackageKit / yum / rpm chain is running too slow for me. In addition to the time required to download any new packages or updates, it seems to require at least one full minute of processing time to install each package, update, or bug fix, no matter how small. Another full minute is consumed for each package in "cleaning up."Running yum from the command line takes nearly the same amount of time.During this time, I cannot run any other applications without severe thrashing. It seems that a full gigabyte of memory is in use with some 100M swapped out to disk.
Is there any way to reduce the running time and memory requirement of the update process?While not updating or installing software, I do not normally run out of memory (i.e. begin thrashing) until I have about a dozen browser tabs open, or the like.
can I change the debian logo on left-top with a my personal logo?
