I downloaded Firefox and Thunderbird from the mozilla site and unpacked them and added the executables to the main menu. When I start either of them, the respective logo jumps up and down below the cursor for more than 10 seconds after the program has finished loading. Is there an easy fix to this small but annoying issue? I run Squeeze with KDE on a Thinkpad R61.

I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.
View 9 Replies View Relatedafter i leave firefox on for some hours (the amount of time varies between a couple of hours to a day), when i try to use flash, for example in videos, it plays the first second of the video and then goes into a sound loop of that 1 second of sound that continues even after i stop the video. it takes about 30 seconds for it to stop. at other times, if i've left a video paused in the middle and start it again after some hours, it goes through the rest of the video in just a few seconds like it is in fast forward. the sound is messed up just like in the other case.
the problem clears up completely after i restart firefox. i have tried changing the flash plugins but this usually leads to other problems. right now i'm using the default plugin file name: libflashplayer.so shockwave flash 10.1 r102 i only had this problem in debian, its been going on for months now and i have absolutely no idea what causes it to happen. it seems completely random. when i have only two or three tabs open its a slight nuisance but restarting firefox with 50 tabs open just takes too long.
I have a problem with my mouse jumping to the top left of the screen (hovering over Applications), this will happen roughly every 5-20secs and makes it impossible to use.This started happening completely out of the blue after several hours of using my desktop today. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dv7-4172us laptop from HP, a new laptop. It has AMD Phenom II N950 -64 bits processors. I am running LiveCD version 10.04 LTS 64 bits in "Try Ubuntu" mode. If I type type fast, the character cursor (not the mouse pointer ) moves away randomly, like a few rows up from present typing location. Sometimes, something else, like another application scrolls it self while I am using Gedit to type this posting. the cursor jumps here and there. Typing on this forum page also produce the same erratic cursor jumping problems!
I also disconnect my optical wireless USB mouse, and still have the same erratic cursor problem. I do not have the ANY problems with Win 7 -64 bits. This is a serious problem. It will render any laptop useless with Linux I so look forward to using Linux.
Firefox take so long more that 2 min when started and there is no internet is available (i.e. Ethernet cable is unplugged).
I think FF is looking for the connection. How can I make FF ignores this check.
I need this because sometime I am away from my networks and I need FF for local testing for web development.

I have a small issue I couldn't find a solution for. I'm running Centos 5.5 on a Fujitsu-Siemens S6120 laptop. When I boot my system and use the touchpad for the first couple of seconds my mouse cursor jumps around the screen sporadically and also mouse buttons "gets pressed" by themselves (without me actually touching them). After 1-2 seconds the situation becomes absolutely normal - mouse moves good and buttons work only when I press them.
Everything repeats after the reboot.
I see the following error in the system log:
psmouse.c: Mouse at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost synchronization, throwing 1 bytes away
It appears right when I try to use the touchpad for the first time, I guess.
The situation isn't critical, but is quite annoying. Is there a way to get it fixed? I searched the Net, but found mostly issues with mouse loosing sync during operation - such thing never happened to me, as my issue appears only once per boot.
I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
I've installed Ubuntu on another PC and most things are great except fore the black screen that you get when you start the PC (just before the Ubuntu Logo). It stays black for 20 seconds. Is there something I can do to make it shorter like on my other PC.

I searched for all kind of info on this board. e.g.: installed preload, intel-microcode, set Xwrapperconfig to -1; -5, -10. tried some changes with swappines and cache_pressure in sysctl.conf. without knowing what it might be good for i ran prelink -a. For about a week it simply rocks: all is "sharp" and clean, including the move of windows. How come? does preload take such a long time ( a few months) to give such an amazing result? Is it related to graphics at all? I upgraded to ext4 bout 4 weeks ago (which takes a while too, from what i have read). intel-microcode doing magic? It is laptop configuration, no NFS server(?) lenny with few installs from backports (open office and .30 kernel - for Intel 5300) vmwware (7), as well firestarter firewall

View 7 Replies View RelatedIt takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
Searching on the Web I find more methods to install Firefox and Thunderbird, but I don't know if they are right and anyway what's the best method.

I've been distro-hopping for a year or so, been through the downstream versions, Ubuntu and Mint, and ended up here. Other than some serious headaches getting wireless up and running, its been great so far. My trouble is that I have lots of use invested in Firefox and Thunderbird. As I've been hopping around through distros I've just been copying my profile folders and just placing them in the .mozilla and .thunderbird folders in my user folder. Then the software just pops up with all of my old settings, addons and messages, etc.
But this hasn't worked in iceweasel and icedove. I have been hunting around online today and haven't found any clues, and don't yet know enough about linux to hack this out and troubleshoot it. Any thoughts? Is it something to do with user agent settings? Or profile.ini files? I'd like to avoid manually installing the tarballs for Firefox and Thunderbird, but it is starting to seem like maybe it is easier. As I also have read that certain addons don't work with iceweasel?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe desktop stops working, the panel stops working.. but compositing, desktop cube etc all work fine.I can still launch a program with Alt-F2.When I try and kill it (to restart) using 'killall plasma' / 'kill -9 <pid> / 'kill -15 pid' from a terminal, nothing happens, the process keeps running. If I leave it for about 30 mins it suddenly dies, allowing me to run 'plasma' from a terminal - then everything is back to normal.
If I log out and try to log back in again, I get a black screen. Only way to fix it is either to kill it and wait for 30 mins or so, or totally reboot the computer.Tail of the xsessions error file:

I am trying to install rhythmbox-0.13.1.tar.gz in my fedora 10 for a long time but i am in vain I downloaded it and i put it in my desktop.Then i did this:

# tar -zxvf rhythmbox-0.13.1.tar.gz
Doing this a new folder named tar -zxvf rhythmbox-0.13.1 is created in my desktop.

I am using Fedora 15 KDE 32-bit. I am facing a problem while shutdown. It takes unusually long to shut down. It reaches the blue screen with the fedora logo within a few seconds, but it stays on the blue logo screen for 2-3 minutes before shutting down. However, I am facing no problems during startup.
About suspending F15 KDE. It goes into suspend successfully but after switching on after suspend, it just shows an unresponsive black screen.
Is anyone else facing the same problem and has it been solved before? Because I haven't come across many posts regarding F15 KDE.
in ubuntu 10.04 After logging in t All I had was the wallpaper & my widgets for around a minute, and then the usual upper and lower panels appeared.. didnt had this problem in 9.10

Before, if I could I would restart X, and then it would load instantly again, but I waited this time and it did load, after a minute or so. Is this a problem with X or vim?

Now after I reboot the Fedora14 during startup, it takes very very long time to start up the mdmonitor service.
After that when I log on using a local account in the Fedora14 machine, it takes painfully long time to log on. And it does not identify the domain user.
I can able to log on to the ldap server through ssh from the Fedora machine.
I issued the command 'getent passwd' which does not fetch the domain users either. I am completely lost now.
