I would like to disable auto loading of network manager/wpa supplicant in my FC13 system. I am not interested in just stopping the service (/etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop) from user lever. Is there any kernel configuration which can serve the purpose. If there is a way to stop notifying user level about new network interface, please let me know.

I got two connections in it, with two different DNS-Servers, because the one of my provider is very slow I surf with opendns, but sometimes that slows down too, so I want to change if necessary. Both connections got the same fixed IP.That worked all fine, until I got my new router (it's a Netgear WGU 624). It's connected by cable and I configured it like the old one. But for some reason instead of connecting to the manually configured connections, my fedora 10 creates a new one "auto eth 0" with a dynamic IP. So every time I boot or switch on from standby my PC connects with this one and I have to manually set it to the right connection. There's no chance to edit or delete it cause those two buttons are grey and won't work. I also tried restarting network manager manually and I also tried starting it with su as root.

The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. I'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.

Everything works great except every once in a while, my Internet connection will drop out for about a minute or so. Ubuntu very nicely tries to reconnect, and most of the time successfully does. The issue is that if I don't catch it every time this happens, I am now running without my VPN.
I want to know if there is any way to DISABLE auto-reconnect to a wireless network if connection is lost or signal fades.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 10.4. My problem is that Network Manager keeps defaulting back to Auto eth0. I have created a new wired connection and set my manual addresses. I have ticked the 'connect automatically' button. Every time I reboot or wake up it reverts back to Auto eth0.I did have wicd installed but this was not reconnecting after wake up (said it was connected but I couldn't ping etc), this is a pain also.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIf I made a distro from scratch it would have been Lubuntu, cept I'm sure my theming would have been horrible. Now Ive installed on a couple of my Laptops, and even had a few friends convert, and for the most part everything is hunkus doris, cept one small issue thats keeping me from slapping it on my trusty laptop. I'm lost as to what the problem could be. Ive tried just about all I can think of, but I use sprint mobile broadband to connect to the net and then use Network Manager to share this connection with the laptops and Palmtops around the house. I can get my sprint modem to connect thats not a big problem the problem is now I cannot get the Auto Eth0 to connect to send out as a share. It just refuses to connect. Now this is not a Lubuntu problem at all Im sure its somehow a Lxde problem, as Mint Lxde, PeppermintOS, and so on do the same thing, refusing to connect Auto Eth0 while Sprint is connected. Any Gnome based distro this works flawless, as does Xfce distros, so Im sure this is somehow something within Lxde. Im sure its down to just "missing" a file or some stupid overlooked thing.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a minor problem with Knetwork-manager. When I boot up, it won't connect to my wireless router automatically. I have to right-click the taskbar icon, disable wireless, then enable wireless, then it connects fine.It remembers the password fine and once it's connected, it's flawless. It's just the minor issue of having to effectively 'switch the internet on' rather than it just being connected when I turn on my laptop.
I'm using Opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3.1 (didn't have this issue with 11.1). I've tried the latest Kubuntu (9.10) and knetwork-manager worked flawlessly but I didn't like the rest of the OS so I came back to Opensuse If I restart, suspend or hibernate it usually connects okay, it just seems to be when I boot from 'cold'.
I've tried nm-applet but same problem. I also tried wicd but it didn't really like my system. I've changed my wireless router recently as well with no change, so I don't think it's that. As I say it's a minor problem, it's not really an issue for me to turn it on each time but it would be nice to clear it up. I've googled and searched since 11.2 was released but haven't found any answers and my linux skills are still a bit lacking.

I've noticed in Gnome pretty much all applications auto-rotate images when viewing, but leave the original image data intact. This may sound silly, but when I want to post pictures on, for instance, Facebook they upload as the picture was originally taken. So, if I took a picture with the camera flipped sideways it appears upright in Nautilus and the two image viewers I have installed, but when I upload the picture it appears to be flipped on its side. Does anyone know how to disable the auto-rotate when viewing feature?

The wifi access was working fine with WEP and system-config-network but recently somebody hacked into my network and I had to switch back to wpa2 aes encryption. Looking at previous posts, I can see that a lot of people have used wpa supplicant and ndiswrapper to enable this. When i tried 9.10 I was not able to connect with my Huawei EC325 modem which was available as an auto CDMA connection in the nepwork manager applet.I posted this in ubuntu forums. This could not get my Huawei USB dongle get connected. So I reverted back to 9.04 from 9.10. recently i tried Lucid. i was dissapointed with it. It seems Auto Cdma connection option under mobile broadband connection is been removed from 9.10. Jaunty updates will be available untill October 2010. So after that for a USB mobile user like me It will be difficult for me to get my 9.04 updated. Ubuntu 9.04 will be outdated. cannot you suggest some methods to solve the problem or shall i stick to jaunty jacklope.

Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". The software is now complete and working so the simple bit (i thought) would be to get the software to load when the touchscreen is switched on. I have made a link to the software executable using the system/prefs/sessions option but the software seems to load on startup without the user interface. Looking at the system manager the software does seem to be running but it seems to be in the background. If i load the programme manually the GUI works.

So i modified following line from /etc/inittab.
I was then able to start my machine in terminal mode(runlevel 3).
I wasn't satisfied at this stage as i was able to get the graphical console by merely typing

So i renamed it thinking OS will fail in finding it when invoked by inittab file . To my surprise i was able to get the terminal back even if i hit
But then i realize i keep on getting following error lines.

I found out the reason behind this was a line in /etc/inittab

Since the file prefdm was renamed and respawned the OS was keep on trying to execute it considering it is terminated.
Now i have made the above line commented and removed execute bit of the file. System is now behaving as i wish it would.
Will it make any difference? I m not using any application that explicitly use graphical user interface and i can work in runlevel 3.
I recently bought my laptop (Fujitsu nh540) and installed FC14 on it. I have Integrated WLAN Atheros HB97 (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) (more info here about the config) running on: 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.PAE
Since I installed FC I've had problems with the internet. In any browser pages load very slow, it looks like the browser waits some seconds, sometimes even 1-2 minutes until it actually starts to load the page.
Second thing I saw is that when it boots I keep getting:
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable? [FAILED]
But I have WiFi internet. I am not using a wired internet connection.
I installed madwifi driver (compiled it, after reading some info on google and it seems it should be good for my network) and it seems it's a bit better, but I still have to wait some seconds until it starts loading pages. I tried different browsers, it makes no difference. On my other 2 laptops I have no problems, the internet works fine, same goes for my android mobile phone. Another "nice" problem I noticed is that when compiz is enabled I see incoming video on skype black and the same black screen for some movies with some programs. After disablig compiz, all works for video.
Just upgraded to 11.04 and this drives me nuts. When an app/window is opened, if it is "sufficiently" large, it maximizes. I use eclipse. Eclipse is a screen-space hog, however I still need to be able to see other windows and the application bar around the edge of the eclipse window. Unfortunatly Unity(?) is fighting me on this set up because every time i relaunch eclipse, it becomes maximized even if I, the user, have explicitly un-maximized it.
How can I disable this auto-maximize behavior.
