Applications :: No Gui When Auto Loading From Boot

May 4, 2010

I'm a new user of Linux & I have recently written an application using Glade and GTK for a touch screen interface using Debian V5. The software is now complete and working so the simple bit (i thought) would be to get the software to load when the touchscreen is switched on. I have made a link to the software executable using the system/prefs/sessions option but the software seems to load on startup without the user interface. Looking at the system manager the software does seem to be running but it seems to be in the background. If i load the programme manually the GUI works.

Ubuntu :: Startup Applications Not Loading On 9.10 Boot

Sep 3, 2010

Since several months ago (I think when I upgraded to Karmic), whatever program I add to session startup won't load on boot, and no icon appears at the top-right of the screen, only clock and shutdown button (no audio etc.). [URL] didn't help, nor did searching in forums and bugs. I've enabled debug to /etc/gdm/custom.conf, and this is my .xsession-errors first part:

Code:
Unable to create /home/name/.dbus/session-bus
(gnome-settings-daemon:1957): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed
(gnome-settings-daemon:1957): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed
Avviso del window manager: Lettura del file della sessione /home/name/.config/metacity/sessions/10202b25c953eedbf3128344035910216700000019440001.ms non riuscita: Apertura del file "/home/name/.config/metacity/sessions/10202b25c953eedbf3128344035910216700000019440001.ms" non riuscita: Nessun file o directory
Unable to find a synaptics device .....

I removed .recently-used.xbel to avoid recently opened files to be logged, so this explains part of these errors. I had disabled gnome-screensaver but now I would need it to automate screen lock and looks like dbus may be the problem. My .dbus directory is empty.

Ubuntu :: Delay Auto Start Up Applications?

Apr 3, 2011

I have it set up to start my music player (RBox) and torrent program (Transmission) when I log in. The problem is all my data is set on my 1TB external hard drive, because my internal hard drive only has 80GBs of space. When I start up the programs open but the external hasn't had time to link the file directories which messes screws up my torrents into having to verify every time and my music has to "recalibrate" as it were.

This isn't an issue when I manually open the programs after a minute or so but what my question really comes down to is... Is there a way to delay an automatic startup? Say, run application 3 minutes into boot up?

General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?

Jun 20, 2011

I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.

I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.

Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

Ubuntu :: No Mouse Busy / Loading Animation For Applications (cursor Activity)

Jul 4, 2011

I've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.

I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?

I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.

Ubuntu :: Boot Script To Auto-boot Into Headless Loki Render?

Jul 28, 2010

I've gotten hold of 3 old pc's that I've installed with Jaunty & use Loki as a quick and dirty render farm manager.

I've got one display between them and so i can check that each one works on its own as a 'grunt' of the 'master' (my main pc).

To get the grunt to work I have to log in to a cli (to save on ram), start nm-applet (the only way the wireless cards work at mo) & start Loki in grunt mode. All whilst connected to a display.

I'd like to learn how to script all this so I can simply switch the pc's on without needing to use a display. Do i need a boot script and how does that work?

How do I set them to auto log in to command prompt?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot From USB Connected External Hard Take Long Time From Loading INITRD Image To Start Boot Process?

Jul 18, 2011

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Debian :: Kdm Fails To Auto-boot ?

Jun 7, 2010

I am having a strange issue with my xserver. I do have nvidia graphics. My system is Debian Squeeze with limited packages from Sid to fix issues when needed. Currently I don't think that there are any installed from Sid that have not since been updated through testing. It also contains one package from Lenny that does not exist in Testing for some reason, ogle the dvd player.

After an update the other week my gui failed to come up. That is not that unusual with nvidida. So I reinstalled the driver and all seemed to be fine until the next reboot some days later which failed. I reinstalled the driver again and all seemed fine.

The machine did not come out of hibernate cleanly some days later and upon reboot no gui

I have tried the whole group of driver packages out of sid, testing, stable. All are afflicted with the same problem. When the box drops back to the login if I login and issue from root '/etc/init.d/kdm stop' then '/etc/init.d/kdm start' the gui comes up just fine. It also seams to launch much faster than it has for some time.

A friend has questioned if kdm is starting to early in the launch process. I think he may be on to something. But looking at the files in /etc/rc*.d does not seem to indicate to me that is the case. kdm has the launch number 5.

The machine has been converted to the, what is it, multi-process launch thingy, quite some time ago now, like a year maybe? These are what is in the sequence from kdm on

Code:

The install is amd-64 using the standard debian kernel.

Debian Configuration :: Loading Video At Boot

Dec 18, 2015

I did a fresh install of Debian Jessie and I have problem booting up with video. I have to boot with "nomodeset" argument or else the boot sequence bugs, and I see a straight line of funky little color squares on the screen. And it boots with nomodeset.

lsmod do lists "nouveau".

So I don't get what's wrong. I have a Nvidia Geforce GT 750M 2gb (Lenovo y400 notebook). My graphic card is listed in the supported hardware of "nouveau"

I remember having a very similar problem on Ubuntu and installing the proprietary driver solved it. So maybe my hardware isnt supported by nouveau? But I would prefer to use an open-source driver than the prorietary.

Here is the kernel log: (I pasted only the lines which contains "nouveau")
