Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)
I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...
what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?
I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

I live in Egypt and we used to have Daylight Saving Time in this time of the year. But due to some political conditions, this decision was revoked and we are not using DST this year. The problem is that my Redhat 5.6 machines, configured to the timezone Africa/Cairo has already set the DST (UTC+3). The current time in Egypt is UTC+2. Of course I can manually set the time but the servers are set to sync automatically with an NTP time server so that time gets synced automatically whenever I try to change it. I want a way or another to disable DST switching.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.
I recently purchased a new laptop for school and installed Slackware64 13.1 I love Slackware, don't get me wrong, in ten years of using Linux, it is by far THE BEST distro I've ever used. However, after about a week's worth of use, I'm doubting the "advantages" of using a 64 bit version. Frequent incompatibilities, library headaches, almost no performance difference, the list goes on. In truth, I have no real need for 64 bit, and 32 bit would probably solve most, if not all, of these little headaches. My question is, what is the best way to switch to 32-bit? Should I just backup, format and re-install using the 32-bit version? Would a simple kernel recompile work? If I re-install using 32-bit, should I format first? I'm personally thinking that I should do a "bare metal install" and cut the Gordian knot instead of trying to untie it. The following is the technical specifications of the computer in question.

I'm aware that some of this hardware is slightly exotic, but I've had no trouble getting any of it working on Slackware64 13.1 and I don't anticipate any problems with it when I switch to 32-bit, but I have been wrong before.
So I decided I want to switch to KDE because it's kinda neat and I decided I wanted a sleeker desktop. I've heard trying to xinitrc file, but I looked in the file and I have no idea where to start configuring it..

I been having a problem with default sound device. I have a TV card and use on-board audio. Every reboot the default soundcard switches between the two. I made an asound.conf in etc pointing to the on-board for Firefox to get sound, but since it keeps switching between the 2 devices I keep having no sound in Firefox. How can I set the on-board audio as default, and make it stick?

When I have two windows open, if I close the top, active window, I would expect that the next window in the stack would receive the focus. However, it does not. Whenever I change the time in Fedora to the correct time and reboot into W7 the W7 time is messed up - about 7 hours earlier. If I set W7's time to the correct time and then reboot to Fedora, Fedora's time is then 7 hours early. For some reason I can't get both OS's to agree it's the same time.

Not sure why.I've went into the Preferences of the Time/Date > Time Settings > and set an hour back manually. I check back in 30-45 minutes, it's back another hour ahead. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1545.

I looked at the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf file it says something completely diff than the iwconfig. iwconfig is saying there is no wireless extensions on lo and eth1 but on eth0 all my info is there now on the conf file it says and ip address on eth2 and nothing on eth 0, or 1. does anybody know why it keeps jumping back and forth? one week its eth0 and maybe 2 months from now its eth1.

I am trying to modify the file access time in a Python routine I have. I have I believe the correct code for this but have a greater issue. Looking at a random file in my home directory I can see it was last accessed yesterday (I didn't open this file yesterday) so it was presumably my virus scan. No problem there Now I have opened the file today,rescanned the file for viruses and read the file in Python and the file access time remains the same!I have checked the access time by right clicking on the file and choosing Properties, using "ls -lu", and using os.stat(path) in Python.

how can i change sleep idle time in fedora
I am using cygwin in order to test a bash script that uses the ls -R command. When I use this, the access date of the subfolders are changed, and I need them to remain what they were before the command was run. I don't have access to a legitimate Linux system, so I'm not sure if this is the fault of cygwin or the ls command. The script is being used to find the last access date of all files underneath several subfolders and then return the latest date found in each subfolder as the last access date for that subfolder. For some reason, some of these folders have files in them that are newer than the folder's last access date, so the script is meant to give us a list of the true last access date for these folders.

suppose i have two file with same name fstab one file is located in /etc and the other is located in /root/ If i make a change in /etc/fstab file the changes has to reflect in /root/fstab . Is there any command to do this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.
