Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio Programs Want Root Access?
Feb 22, 2011
At least this is what it looks like to me.
Amarok can play music but asks to open kde wallet manager for some password. All other programs (vlc, media player, audacity, etc) seem to function normally but no sound comes out of the speakers. code...
So simply running program requiring sound enabling as root does not work - plus it would not be very good practice, IMHO.
What should I do?

I've finally got round to setting up my speakers and am now experiencing a slightly odd sound problem; some programs run sound perfectly, whereas some are completely silent. For example, running mplayer from command line produces sound, whereas wine, flash, kaffeine, system sounds, etc, are silent. I'm assuming this is likely a pulseaudio problem, and I've ran through the things suggested on the suse troubleshooting page for that, but haven't had any luck [URL]rpm -qa '*alsa' output:
Code:
alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.24-6.1.i586
alsa-firmware-1.0.24.1-3.1.noarch
[code]....

I have been using windows operating system for a long time now, but I am not well familiar with linux. Whenever I used to install Windows, I used to install the corresponding audio drivers(in order to listen to the music). The problem I am facing is that I do not know how to install the audio drivers(if they really exist in linux Mint 10 operating system). As a result I am not able to listen to any audio file due to lack of corresponding audio driver programs. make proper configurations settings so that I can listen to audio files in Linux Mint version 10.

How can I mount an iPod touch in Ubuntu with access to the root and not only the media folder?
I tried to do things with ifuse and it didn't work or I didn't understand.
I succeeded to mount my iPod with ifuse without root access in /home/user/iPod but now I would like to delete it but I don't know how.
So how can I mount my iPod touch with root access (something with afc2) and to delete the unwanted one that I made ifuse?

I am pulling my hair out once again after trying for over 15 months off and on to get a tv tuner working under linux. I have just received my new tuner card which I thought was supposed to be easy to run, a HVR-950Q, no luck yet. But first I am trying to use something called mysql (new to me), for mythtv and [I] keep getting
# mysqladmin -u root password ma

I was using the latest stable release of Debian, dual-booted alongside Windows Vista, with the GNOME desktop, installed via netinst, trying to build and install a library that I knew and trusted, when suddenly I couldn't open the Root Terminal. I clicked the link (in Applications->Accessories (I think, whatever the top one is)->Root Terminal), and in the taskbar I saw an item that said "Starting Root Terminal". A few seconds later, that went away, but the terminal still wasn't open. I tried the regular user terminal, to see the same thing happen. Unsure of what was happening, I tried restarting my computer, since that's always the first step you should take in computer problems.
When I restarted, GNOME wouldn't start. The screen would flash a bit for a few seconds, then a dialog box would appear over a background of static that said "The greeter application is crashing. Attempting another one...".t would then go back to the DOS-style kernel, wait a second, and then the same thing would happen. After several of that, I would get a blue screen which said something to the effect of "It has been detected that the desktop environment has crashed six times in the past 30 seconds.
Waiting two minutes before trying again." When it did that, I tried logging in as root to assess the problem. I gave it the correct password, but it said that it was an incorrect login. After several tries (to ensure I didn't mistype the password), I logged in as myself. Same problem. I tried the su command, with the correct password, and it said it couldn't authorise it.
After a lengthy conversation with a friend of mine who was very good with computers, he basically summarised that he had no clue, but that his best guess would be a virus. Upon running the Linux installer, I found the Repair option. Not being particularly familiar with Linux, I used it simply to backup my important files onto a flash drive. I then tried running the Install option, in an attempt to simply write over my existing Linux and make it new again. The installer, however, consistently froze up when trying to start the partitioner, on the "Checking disks..." stage. I figured it was a problem with my partition. In my naivete, I simply used the Windows tools to clear that partition... It destroyed GRUB too, so I couldn't run any OS. I figured my computer was pretty well screwed, and at that point just decided to bring it into the shop and have them completely wipe it.
my computer was backed up onto an external hard driven I brought it back, I reinstalled Windows. Upon restart, it said that it was still looking for GRUB, which made no sense to me. After messing around with it a bit, I decided to just reinstall Linux too. To my lack of surprise, that fixed the problem. Both OS' now ran just fine. The first thing I did on Debian was to install the Clam Anti-Virus, which I understood to be one of the best Linux anti-viruses. However, within about 10 hours, got the same problem as originally. I wasn't doing any of the same things, and between the lack of consistency in activities and the fact that I had an anti-virus running, figured it wasn't a virus. Not knowing what to do, I just left it and have been using Windows since.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I'm having the following issue: a lot of the programs I use seem not to be able to save their settings on shutdown (Visual Paradigm for UML, for example. Kile is another one). This happens only for some of my programs. What is causing this? Have I installed them in an inappropriate location? (e.g. VP is in /opt). I also have this problem sometimes with system settings (screensaver reverted to old value upon reboot once, but after that it worked...).
Edit: Just noticed running as root doesn't work either, I rebooted and it's back to square one

In the applications menu I would like to always run certain programs as root. For instance Wireshark; I'll never want to run that as a regular user I'll always want to be root. Is there a way to set it up so that when I click it in the menu I'm prompted for my password and it will automatically run as root? (Much like in windows you can right click and check the box that says always run as administrator.)

and if i didnt customize partitions when i installsed and just used the whole drive - they're both together in the same partition right, the home just goes into the root? but it still creates a 2-3 gig swapfile?
do you recommend creating separate partitions for the home and root folder during install? is there any benefit besides being able to reinstall ubuntu without losing your data?

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.
I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:
Code:
So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

I have access to an account on my school's student-linux server, but I don't have sudo or root access.
I would like to install and use programs aside from the minimum ones available to all users. We have been given permission to do this, excepting new webserver and database software.
I know enough to compile and make a tarball, but that leaves me with an inelegant directory structure, no man page access, and no easy access to the executable.
I would like someone to share how they would install programs in this environment- ideally in a clean manner, with access to the man pages, and info about how to set an environment variable so the programs can be accessed via their name (without a path) both by me and possibly by scripts.
Dealing with missing libraries seems to complicate things further. For example, a program as simple as toilet requires libcaca.
I think the proper handling of the process of cleanly installing libraries in a user's home directory is an integral part of an answer to how to install programs without root access.

to start off, i'll post the specs of the machine:
dell inspiron e1505
3.2 gb ram
1.86 ghz intel core duo
ati x1400 gfx
opensuse 11.4 kde 32 bit.
okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.

I have ubuntu 11.04 installed along side windows. And I often share files with windows computers. If I am installing a new package from ubuntu software center, and consquently I have to log in as root to do so, which means I have given the system 'privileges' as the program is being installed, I decide to go open mozilla, and surf suspicious sites on the net. Is it possible in that case for me to get a virus?
When we enter the password for the root user in order to run one program such as ubuntu software center, does that mean that all programs have root privileges for the time being (as the software center is installing the program)?

I am having some issues with getting Ubuntu Studio 10.04 to work correctly on my system. Everything works fine except sound. I have a M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface and my onboard sound is disabled. When I run the command alsaconf I can see the ICE1712 card without issue. However when I run alsamixer the only option it is giving me is my HD sound from my ATI video card. For some reason it seems the ATI card has locked the audio to it with no way to remove it. I have reinstalled the alsa drivers for my card and can only see it through alsaconf. When I tell alsaconf to configure the ICE1712 card it says it configured it properly. When I run the command envy24control it says no ICE1712 cards were found.

Is there an application that anyone knows about that I can use to convert either an .flv or .ogg file that contains both audio and video to just an audio .ogg file (preferably vorbis+theora) without audacity? I'm fairly certain audacity could accomplish this but it seems like overkill for what I'm trying to do and the computer I'm trying to use does not run it so well.
::EDIT:: I should also mention that I've tried looking on google. I did find downloadhelper extension for firefox which uses ffmpeg to convert the files but I don't see any obvious way to strip the video.

I have used other distros on and off in the past with no trouble, but for some reason I seem to have had this problem with several versions and flavours of Ubuntu on various systems. I've never solved this problem the previous times I've had it, just given up. But this time I actually need to get this working. I've recently upgraded my computer, so my old system has been relegated to HTPC duties in my lounge. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having issues getting internet access with some programs, while others work fine.
Firefox and Evolution haven't been able to access the internet from the start.Empathy IM has no trouble connecting to my MSN and Facebook accounts.I had no trouble downloading and installing Google Chromium browser through Ubuntu Software Center, and have no trouble accessing the internet with Chromium. On the first boot after the install, Ubuntu automatically told me to update my nVidia drivers online, and did so without error.Update Manager detects updates, but fails to download them.
I successfully and flawlessly downloaded installed XBMC Media Center and some related skins and things through Synaptic, but XBMC cannot access the internet. However it can access shared files over my LAN, including Windows 7 shares.Ubuntu itself cannot access any files on my Windows 7 computer. It can access the work group and see my Win7 shares, but refuses to mount them. Strangely, XBMC can access these shares and stream media from them fine.

Let me see if I can put this coherently: Programs that require super user authentication AFTER they have been launched (for instance,in the time settings applet, you have to sudo authenticate to update the clock, but not just to open the applet. Another instance is Ubuntu-Tweak, which requires admin rights for some of it's functions.)

Any other information provided on request. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.1, all updates applied.

I have a project stored on a university server which I'd like to be able to work on from home.
I already have an SFTP folder set up, which I can access easily in Nautilus, and I can freely copy files back and forth, or open them in e.g. gedit.
However, the project is in Matlab, and I cannot see the mounted SFTP folder from within Matlab. This means that I can't work on the project in Matlab without copying the whole lot across to my local machine when I want to work on it.
Is there some way I can get Matlab to "see" the connection so that I can use the mounted SFTP folder like any other in my filesystem? It appears on my desktop when connected - does it have some other mount location?

I have a problem with setting up 2 programs ROOT and GEANT4 through .tcshrc file. In order to better understand what I mean, I have attached the contents of my .tcshrc below. So, when I open a new Terminal, ROOT would not work, but the Geant4 works. Although everything is set up correctly, I have checked the commands for ROOT later, and in that case it works perfectly fine. When I switch ROOT and Geant4, and put Geant4 commands first, and later ROOT commands then ROOT would work, but the GEANT4 libraries won't. let me know what is wrong with my .tcshrc file.

setenv PATH ${ROOTSYS}/bin:${PATH}
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH ${ROOTSYS}/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}

Now I cant open anything in the fedora menu, no programs, nothing comes up. Cant find any info on what I should do. Can still run firefox and stuff from applets, just cant access my programs menu.

I have GParted installed, running openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. When running GParted, it always grayed out most file system actions, supporting only hfs fully. This made no sense, as I had all the required packages installed for other file system support. However, I recently figured out how to get it to work. Using the installed menu button doesn't work, running "gnomesu /usr/sbin/gparted" doesn't work; to get it to work, I have to open up a terminal, type "su -" to log in as root, and then run gparted. The menu button and gnomesu both prompt for a password, so it should be running as root, but launching it through the root terminal is the only way to actually get it to work. Is one root different from another?
