So it looks like the CUPS package provided by Fedora is not compiled with SSL support. I'm getting an error while trying to print via IPP over URL...Is there a way to enable SSL without rebuilding the package? If no, how do I rebuild the package?

But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine

How to I add a root users to access the 127.0.0.1:631 interface for CUPS?

I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....
cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.
If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:

We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.
cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:

Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.
I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.
I have installed Slackware 13 on one of the hard disks of my computer in order that I can get it working properly before changing over from 12.2.
My main problem is that I cannot get CUPS to change from 'Letter', which I presume is an American size, to A4, has anyone else had experience of this problem?

1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.

This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.
This post is for an HP parallel printer but I think it should work for at least "some" other parallel printers.I am sure that someone smarter than me will follow up this post with a "well, just do this and that" and you will have your HP Laserjet 6P printer ready to go, but since questions litter the forums of MANY distros on how to get "at least" an HP parallel printer to work, I'll post this anyway.This may or may not work for you if you do not have an HP but you can try it.The install printer box will let you do an install for an HP Parallel and it asks for how it is to talk to it, through CUPS sock or "local host'. When we get through what I recommend you should chose "local host".
View 2 Replies View RelatedNot sure if this is hardware or software so I am raising the question here. I have an Ithaca 280 printer that worked great on fedora 8 with cups 1.3.3. When I upgraded my server and installed Fedora 12 with cups 1.4.2 i noticed a 5 second delay between sending a print job to the printer and it actually printing. This issue doesnt happen with laser printers, just the ithaca thermal printer. I have tested this with 10 other ithaca 280 printers and all of them have the same result. I am using a raw driver, and it is an IP based printer setup for Jetdirect in cups. The setup is identical on a Fedora 8 server as it is on this Fedora 12 server. I have even taken the steps to upgrade to cups 1.4.4 just to see if it was corrected in a newer version, but the issue is still there. I have a utility that writes the raw text directly to the printer which i used to test that it wasnt an issue with the printer or its internal print server. That utility allows the document to print immediately.
what is causing this delay and how to correct it? If not, does anyone know how to print directly to the printer using cups instead of letting it go to the queue first like cups normally does for print jobs?
I have, on numerous times, tried to set up a wireless printer using CUPS. with each attempt it repeats a query asking for the username and password (root password). After entering both the window disappears, pauses and again repeats the same request. It appears that it will not accept the root password even though it works in other cases such as becoming a root user.

The dialog pops up, but will not accept my root user name or any other. I tried using lppasswd to create add root, but it just keeps failing. Don't remember having this problem with F12, but I recently upgraded to F14...
I'm working on CUPS server here now, I am new to the whole Fedora area, I'm starting to like it, tackling one service after the other. I have cups, which I don't recall installing but was there guess its a default. So I added a printer on my server, that was on a 10.0.1.1 block, added it as lpd://10.0.1.1/lab3printer. Ok that worked and printed from my server, but my problem is when other machines try to add the printer. I continue getting this problem

I have 3 computers connected to a router; the ip addresses are assigned by the ADSL provider via DHCP. One of the 3 computer has a printer connected. In Fedora 9 I used to print from the other. 2 computers via CUPS by defining the ServerName in /etc/cups/client.conf as assigned by mDNS (the one with the .local suffix). It seems that in Fedora11 the game dos not work anymore; the connection is forbidden unless, you put the IP address of ServerName in /etc/cups/client.conf. But this is upractical because the IP address is not fixed. (DHCP) A workaround is possible because ping on the name assigned by mDNS shows the IP address; if you capture the IP address, it is possible to create /etc/cups/client.conf with the IP address at boot. (A suitable script can do the job).

Trying to set up a printer for the 1st time using CUPS's GUI system-config-printer. Trying to set up a printer that will print in landscape mode, 132 characaters per line, and 66 lines per page.Got it to print in landscape mode but the line wraps at 108 characters.What settings do I need to get it not to wrap. Current settings are:

I am running CentOS 5.4 with CUPS v1.3.7 and have a Brother printer (MFC-5895CW) that connects wirelessly to a SonicWall device. The SonicWall is hardwired to my PC. I have found that periodically, the printer queue will become disabled and the only way to re-enable it is to issue a cupsenable command.
I believe that queue only gets disabled if the wireless connection drops in the middle of a print job. I've tried dropping the wireless connection and then bringing it back up when no print jobs are active or pending and the queue is fine for the next print job that is sent when the connection is up.
I did a little research and found that my version of CUPS contains support for an ErrorPolicy setting in the printer.conf file that may prevent the print queue from being disabled. I'm hoping that if I change the default value from "stop-printer" to "retry-job" that this will prevent CUPS from disabling the print queue and requirring a cupsenable command to re-enable the queue.
I don't want to play around with scheduling cron jobs to enable the queue.
Im trying to set up a print server using Fedora 12 and CUPS.
It recognized the printer, and i can print from the linux box. When i try to install it on my Win 7 64-bit box i can install the printer itself by giving it the IP address and port number of the linux box but i cant sent anything to it to print. I apologize im a little rough on the details, im not at home right now. I believe the printer i have is a HP PSC 1500. I opened the cups port on the linux firewall, and i shared the printer through the cups admin browser page.
What is the command to install CUPS and Samba, like yum install. I don't want to be installing wrong things and then end up with dependency problems, and after that what do i need to configure to have CUPS print from the localhost, and so that other computers from the networks also be able to print from the server, that is i'm workin on a server. As for samba i just need the installation command, then i want to figure the rest out.

Although I can use system-config-printer to set double-sided printing for a network attached HP4650, jobs are printed single-sided. Double-sided printing worked with fc7 with the same printer.
I managed to print from fedora without rebooting into windows.
--installed rpms provided by canon
--installed cups
--logged into cups
--selected my printer (ip2770)
--printed a page--and bang! too dark!
In cups, or on the computer, I only have one option, 600 dpi, which I'm assuming is why it is so dark, ugly, and nothing like it needs to look like This whole process (which is way over my head) put two printers in my printer set up, both called ip2700 series, and I'm not sure which should be the default. I am thrilled to be printing now from linux, but not happy with the quality.

All of them are wirelessly networked through my Linksys WRTG54GS thats flashed with DD-WRT Mega firmware. The only laptop that has a hardwired connection to the printer and HD is my gaming laptop. how to go about allowing this? My printer doesnt show up in the CUPS wizard.

I have both client machine Windows XP and Windows 7. Both has setup the above printer and print fine without any problem. I can get the PDF file from windows test print.
