Right now we are running a gigabit network with unmanagead switches. What do i gain performance wise and capability wise with moving to smart and managed and do these benefits make the cost worth it?
View 1 RepliesI use my T61 both wireless and in the dock, where I switch to the wired connection. After the latest round of updates, I seem to have lost the ability to switch to the wired network. When I turn the laptop on, I see it connect to the wireless network, but when I left click on the tray icon under Wired Network is says Device not managed. I have not made any changes to anything in the last couple weeks, besides some updates. How do I go about getting the wired network back in there?I tried to add eth0 back into System - Preferences - Network Connections, but whenever I try and add eth0, but it still says Device not managed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was asking around in some IRC channels earlier trying to develop some thoughts on how NFS is better than CIFS. I set up a FreeNAS file server, and that's where all of my data now resides on a pair of raided drives. That way my main desktop, which is kind of a power hog gaming rig, can be powered off since I pretty much live on my laptop now. Anyway, I began to tinker with CIFS and NFS. Since some family members in the household use Windows, I definitely need CIFS. But I wanted to bounce back to NFS too and check it out.
While I do think it's nice I don't have to worry about authentication to the NAS box when using NFS, it's still a little scary. Being that it's more of a trust method instead of actual authentication, truthfully all a user needs to get into your data is the path to your NFS share and a matching UID. I mean, am I wrong by saying this? Sure, it may seem like NFS is convenient, but this angle of it is a little scary. I just don't feel like that screams "secure."
On the flip side, you have CIFS, which uses a user authentication level. So I hit my little shortcut to my NAS and it asks me who I am. I log in and bam, I have connection. I can browse other folders on the share, etc. This is convenient because I do have a "public" share on here with a generic user. That way if friends come over and want to transfer something to me, I have them drop it in the public share and I later transfer it accordingly. Since there is a user level authentication, this to me seems a little more secure.
Speed wise I was a little concerned, as some users have said NFS is faster than CIFS. Well, they might be right. But I did a few bench tests here on my laptop, using the same exact share except one with CIFS one with NFS. I stayed in the exact same location and transferred the same 300mb file in each instance.
NFS - 1.7mb/s
CIFS - 1.5/mb/s
Not exactly enough to warrant a huge argument over, so I leave that argument along the road to be forgot about since it doesn't really have any bearing on this situation. I like things about both NFS and CIFS. I just want to know why is it "not optimal" to use a full blown CIFS setup even if you're using 100% Linux systems.

I have a question about bonded NICs and the switches they are connected to.
I have a server which needs to send a lot of data to another server quickly. Both have multiple GbE NICs. I understand what is required at the server end (I think) in that a pseudo-interface is created such as bond0 with the IP applied to that interface rather than eth0 and eth1.
My question relates to the connection between the servers, i.e. the switch. Is a specific type of switch required for this to work, as an IP will have 2 (or more) MAC addresses associated with it, or how does the switch decide to which port to route the traffic for the bond0 IP?
Also, will this only work when multiple connections are being made? What I mean is, will each individual TCP connection only use either the physical eth0 OR the physical eth1 interface, or can a single connection make use of the aggregated bandwidth, sending one packet to one physical interface and another to the other physical interface, using the bond0 IP as the destination?
What I am trying to work out is if I had a storage server connected to an application server and exporting storage using NFS or GlusterFS, would an aggregated link improve throughput?
I'm configuring Nagios at the moment, but I'm doubting my approach to transparent switches a bit. It seems from reading the documentation that Nagios wants me to ignore transparent switches, although I also doubt this interpretation of mine.

As you can see, there are 22 clients connected to the router. Since switches don't have an address, they cannot be measured. But if I ignore the switches, the schema is an oversimplified picture of reality. So what I'm looking for is a way to display the switches, even though they don't have an address. What I did was, I created the switches as where they proper fully featured ones, and listening to 127.0.0.1 as address. Luckily, this tricked Nagios. And it works, but it's not very elegant. Is there a better way to approach this pseudo-problem? Perhaps a build-in I overlooked?
I have 2 cisco sw 3500xl series working properly forwarding traffic. All operations are Layer 2. I have setup keep alive 10 on all the ports. They are connected to another sw together with a Linux router on Cent OS 5.2. I can't ping the switches from the Linux box. If I arping them, I get a response and after that they are accessible for telnet. Otherwise they are not. After 5min the macs are flushed from the arp table of the Linux box, and then again they are not accessible only if I arping them, or set a static mac.

Often I have to set static address on eth0 etc.I know how to set a static address for eth0 by editing /etc/network/interfaces and all that good stuff, but when I click on the Network Manager applet, it says 'Wired Network - not managed'.I may have deleted it for some reason, but why does it no longer appear, even though eth0 is working?I've also found in the past that changes to interfaces in the Network Manager, such as giving eth0 a static address, do not seem to stick?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get a wireless PC (PCMCIA?) card working under 10.04 desktop. It does not seem to be recognized by nm-applet and I cannot see any particular reason why. I have disabled the built in wireless (Intel 2200) in both BIOS and by blacklisting the appropriate module so there should be no interference from that. The card is a Linksys WPC300N V1. It has Power and Link/Act LEDs both of which remain dark.

I saw a comment about 'You need to have "managed=true" for NetworkManager to bring the interfaces up. in '/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf and did so but I see no change.
I understand that modules must be compiled to support network-manager but I would expect that to be the case with modules that ship with 10.04. I don't see any obvious indications for why this is not coming up with network-manager. Is there something I;m overlooking or something else I need to do?

I have 2 wlan cards. wlan0 and wlan1. wlan0 is in AP mode(Master mode) using hostap. wlan1 is connected to another wireless network and is in Managed mode. Now I want to make a bridge between wlan0 and wlan1. I do it like that:

can't add wlan1 to bridge mybridge: Operation not supported
It doesnt work, because wlan1 is in managed mode. But Windows 7 can bridge 2 Wlan cards when one is AP and another one is STA. How to do it in Linux?

My setup is as follows:wifi0 --> Internet; managed entirely via nm-applet (NetworkManager)
Where I'm running into trouble is in the creation of a bridge interface (br0) to bridge future VPN clients to my local network.
The guide(s) say that I need to screw around in /etc/network/interfaces to setup br0 and [eth0/wifi0] accordingly. The problem is that when I specify a configuration of any sort for wifi0 (my only choice for a network uplink), it disables nm and I am unable to configure my wifi in any sort of sane way after reboot... Further info: this "server" doesn't move, and always always connects to the same wifi hotspot that is also nailed in place.
Yesterday I did an upgrade and today my box is unable to connect to the internet.
I have tried another cable, it didn't help.
Basically NetworkManager does not connect eth0 to the network, if I try to run ifup from the command line I get:

I can see in network configuration settings, that the device has been correctly detected and eth0 interface is correctly activated, yet when I try to uncheck the box manage by NetworkManager and start it manually, it tells me that the cable is disconnected... I've tried two different cables, different ports on my router - no help.
Can I use apcupsd to monitor my smart-ups 2200 without it being connected to a server? I have set the TCP info on the APC and can telnet into it, but I'm kinda confused by what I've been reading in the apcupsd documentation.
If someone can tell me about there experience doing this and best practice that would be awesome.
I have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

I ran sudo dhclient to try release and renew my IP, in case that was the problem. It released and renewed successfully, but still didn't connect to the Internet.
What are the benefits to upgrading to F15 from F14 if any? Has there been some huge step forward in performance, security or some other reason that makes it worth while to upgrade? I know many people make the move simply because they wish to have the latest and greatest, but is there any reason specifically to upgrade to the latest and greatest?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am confused with the concept of Kerberos and LDAP SSL. I am in the midst of integrating my Unix box with the Active Directory hence the use of PAM_LDAP method. I understand that since it's non-secure transmission hence We use Kerberos to authenticate. If we already used kerberos to authenticate i.e. it means that the username/password is not transmitted in clear text. Why we still need LDAP SSL? What is the benefit?
