I need a solution for my problem, I need to install and manage my clients & servers through active directory, currently server have installed FC10, I want to install Windows 2003 Server Enterprise with AD (Active Directory) but this installation update the MBR of hard disk, so how can recover or reinstalled the grub w/o re-download the FC10.

Onde day I needed to use this free space and formated it using the windows. It worked fine, but when I reestarted the notebook my grub did not opened! To solve the problems I tried to recovered it but with no success, so I found a tutorial to reinstall the grub, It worked partially, because my open suse partition was not detected and I can't access it.

I re-installed Windows over an old Windows partition. The hard-drive used to have Windows and Ubuntu on it. I am now in usb live ubuntu because grub doesn't appear anymore when I boot the computer (it boots in the new windows automatically). The ubuntu partition is still there, as I can access my files from this live usb. I'd just like to know how to re-install grub.

I decided to create a Clonezilla image of the ext3 /boot partition from my laptop, as that has exactly the same partition scheme. I've restored that. I realise it may not work but it might save me reinstalling F11 from scratch. How does one reinstall grub in Fedora 11 given that /boot is on a separate partition? Booting from the F11 DVD in rescue mode, running chroot /mnt/sysimage and grub-install /dev/sda doesn't work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDue to lack of concentration, I inadvertantly ran PClinux(2009-2)'s "install.sh" while I was in openSuse 11.1. This file says:

I soon found out that Suse 11.1 would no longer boot from boot.ini (using bootpart) because the boot process now brings up PCLOS (in /dev/sda6) rather than Suse 11.1 sitting in /dev/sda5. No problem, I thought, I'll boot from the Suse install DVD, use repair, and away I go. Wrong. After grinding, it started mentioning about generating something for sda13, which is my last partition. NTFS! So I bailed before it got too far. I even tried "rescue" option on the DVD, command prompt, and grub commands to reinstall via "setup.
Then I tried to use Super Grub Disk (.97xx) to reinstall the PBR, stage 1 and stage 2 loaders. Didn't change a thing. So then I used Grub4DOS and got into my Suse 11.1 installation using this in its menu.lst:

Worked fine, and is now my (only) method of booting to 11.1. So obviously it's bypassing stage 1 and 2 files, using it's native Grub4DOS code. But then I tried Yast-Bootloader to reinstall Grub's files. No difference. Then I used the advanced part to "write bootloader code to disk" No difference. Even tried "propose a new boot scheme" (or whatnot) no difference. After looking at all this, I've come to the conclusion that the PBR code in sda5 is scraunched, and/or stage 1 code (although it's still the original date), or stage 2 (which definitely had a new timestamp of when I committed the fatal error by executing PCLOS's "install.sh".
So my question is this: How do I do a good COMPLETE re-install of Suse's version of the grub files? Because, for sure, grub commands like "setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,5), and variations thereof, certainly aren't doing it? My reasoning is that I should make sure that all the boot files get restored/confirmed as "originally installed by Suse".

I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? i have ubuntu 10.04 64 bit installed and configured and working sweet. I have reinstalled windows 7 and now i can't boot ubuntu i've tried easybcd to add ubuntu to win boot loader which failed and tried to follow the instructions to reinstall grub through a live cd which i am in at the moment. i go to a terminal and type sudo grub and it brings up the grub prompt. i have mounted all discs and entered the command find /boot/grub/stage1 and it keeps spitting this back at me Error 15: File not found

I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.
I have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.
So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

I've just installed Windows 7 in a separate partition to play with. Trouble is, it's wiped out GRUB. I was expecting this and I know last time this happened it was easy to fix. The forum serch found a thread with 3 ways to re-install GRUB. I've tried each, and none have wored. Methods I've tried
1) The aptitude install grub-pc command ran and said it had worked correctly. On re-bootong, Windows started without any GRUB screens on the way.
2) The chroot method stated it installed correctly after raising a few warnings - after I used the --force command, as the install failed without it. Again, reboot and get Windows without a GRUB screen...
3) Normal grub-install command (no chroot). This went as per the chroot command.
From where I'm sat, it looks like I'll have to do a clean Linux re-install on the disk and then restore my linux files again from a back-up - something I'm not particularly over-joyed by the prospect of...
How do you reinstall grub after XP recovery ? btw I only have the live cd on a usb.. not the live cd it self.
