View 4 RepliesAs a strategy for learning linux I have decided to adopt using a lean windows based approach. I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.
I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?
I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.
A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? Oh! that's 3.I am certainly appreciating the depth of this forum, and the breadth of knowledge among you forumite's. Reading it is time well spent.
1.What character instructd the shell to interpret a special character as an ordinary character?
2.What directory contains some of the utilities available on the system in the form of binary files?
3. What command is used to search the location of a utility?
4. What command is used to instruct the editor to write the file and quit the editor?
5. What key quits the more utility and displays the shell prompt?..........
i have been assigned a task to form a system like gmail over the local area network of my institution.i am not able to find the correct approach.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently trying to find ways to get in-depth knowledge of the Linux OS. To give a brief overview of where I am at right now, I am a computational science graduate student who does all of his work on *nix scientific clusters.I also took a lot of computer engineering and computer science courses in college, as well as being the stereotypical standard computer nerd growing up, so I'm somewhat familiar with computer architecture, though more from the hardware side.So I'm familiar (though I wouldn't claim to be an expert quite yet, by any means) with using Linux and C programming, and I have a basic grasp of generic computer architecture, but what I feel I really lack knowledge in is the specific details of the Linux. All the details of the boot process, exactly what the kernel does, how Linux handles memory management, etc. I'm having difficulty finding any information on this;all I can find is generic information targeted towards people who are just starting out, and the stuff I've found that talks about the kernel seems more oriented towards "you change setting X and Y happens" rather than what the kernel is doing.
View 7 Replies View Relatednothing informative from me as of now, although I have only been out of "Windows" for a little less than a day, I suppose the only alternative conversation topic is a simple request for those more experienced users to point out some major/musts about topics to focus on as I'm new to open source ANYTHING, really
To think I was so "under the gun" about spending loads of cash to keep up with the IT group of choice, I have gained some much needed relaxation w/my cup a tea. Pinpointed request, I guess, "when you first started, and knowing what you can do with it now, would you be obliged to say 'HEY, THIS IS THIS, BUT WATCH OUT FOR THIS'
i have a RAM of 1 Gb & swap of 1Gb with fedora11 installed, initially in RAM programme memory uses around 300 Mb & cache uses 600-700 Mb , but after some time it starts using swap memory though my programme memory is still around 300 mb, it keeps on increasing swap memory as a result my system keeps on slowing down & finally when swap memory is 100% system almost stops responding but programme memory is still around 300mb.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have automated backups running on my ubuntu box using rsnapshot (rsync) basically following this tutorial. My concern is how to restore if everything is lost. Since it does not seem that I can backup the entire drive and that I have to choose individual folders and some like proc/ cause problems.
Currently in my rsnapshot.conf I have (see below). Is there a way to just clone the entire drive? Or should I not do this? Questions:
1, Can I backup in a way such that it is a clone of the drive so that it can be swapped with the current drive?
2, If not yes to clone, If I had a total drive failure would I install a basic ubuntu and then replace all the files with the backups?
3, Anything I might not know about that I should.

I wonder if I can backup files from an ext partition to a ntfs partition and keeping all kind of metadata and file infos?!
With other words:
Can I backup a full linux system from a ext file system to a external ntfs partitioned disk using rsync -a (keeping all file permissions)?
Is something getting lost of a file (like permissions or anything... flags...) when copied / rsynced from ext to ntfs?
The thing is, that when I restore the stuff back from ntfs to ext, can I still use my system properly?
And can I backup files like photos from ext to ntfs without loosing any meta data?
Or asked more in general: What is the difference of a file on a ext partition compared to the same file on a ntfs partition?
I used to know how to access and rw other linux drives and do the fstab magic. For some reason I've lost my touch. I just want the drive to automount and have full access. I don't need a beginners tutorial on mkdir and fdisk -l. Is there a foolproof way to get my drives to do what I want? I dual boot fedora and ubuntu, but have the same issues on both.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe are using several printers on our Linux RH network to print customer invoices and receipts. Receipts are short forms of just 21 or 22 lines. Two of the printers (an HP LJ1300 and a Dell 5200) eject the receipt paper automatically; the other two HP (a LJ 4200 and a LJ2420) do not eject. You have to press the green button on the printer. Is there a solution to that? They are all set up with the same PCL settings.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from FC12 to FC14 and now the system/case fan blows full speed constantly. I also moved from i386-PAE to am64.
The CPUs are cool, the machine is basically idle, and the fan noise is really annoying (and blowing cool air).
In FC12 the fan would auto-adjust with CPU load. This is not the case now.
I ran sensors-detect and it doesn't seem to find my fans:
[root@pangea modprobe.d]# sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +40.0C (crit = +75.0C)
k8temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
code....
I don't remember ever having to even run sensors-detect in FC12. I searched the board for a bit and didn't see any solutions. I'll attach the full output from sensors-detect.
I want to know how to use a grub with a compiled kernel...and perform the boot of the system using a Cd-ROM for this purpose.

Running 10.10. My graphics card has just blown up so I've had to switch to the motherboard internal graphics. Problem is, Ubuntu doesn't like it - I have to start in recovery mode and 'low graphics for this sesion'. How do I remove all 'knowledge' of Nvidia and then let Ubuntu configure itself for my new(!) graphics capability?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI setup a dual boot system, with approximately 200gig planned for ubuntu 10.10. Based on the article here:[URL]..And this quote:
Quote:
# sda1 Recovery Partition, unchanged
# sda2 Windows partition, shrunk preferably from inside Windows, hopefully about 30Gb
# sda3 Primary Partition, 10Gb, file-system = ext3, in the Partitioning Section of the installer change the "Mount Point" = /
[Code]...
I assumed at that point that the "sda3" "/" would be for booting purposes. I would have to guess that I was wrong, because it is filling up very quickly. As you may be able to tell by the screen shot, "sda5", "/home" was what was assumed to be the file structure to store all of the programs and such.
I have only been running this setup for a week, and would expect to not be seeing my "boot" partition growing so quickly. Do I need to resize it? here do the standard programs that I get from the ubuntu software center install at (partition wise)? I suppose I dont mind wiping that section dry and starting over, but I would give a resize a try if possible.
Data flow has become nowadays really huge. Although how hard one can try to tide folders, hard-disk, it can always be some days you are looking for something. What could be interesting to make available, e.g. to install for users, on all Debian stations. In some universities, with Linux-machines network, it is often kind of obliged to use emacs and 'office' KDE applications, as a standard at first.
for organizing better, what could be the solution as 'data flow organizer'? Many solutions, many methods, many ways are offered but none will be perfect
I tried to utilize Add/Remove Software and install some gcc and other packages from my Fedora10 DVD, but It's list of available softwares is empty.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI need to recreate in a local folder called /distro/fedora/ the full directory tree (including eventually hidden files, symlinks, etc.) contained in the .iso file just downloaded (Fedora-15-i686-Live-Desktop.iso).
I understand I can mount the ISO image using something like this:
mount -ro loop /path/to/image.iso /mnt
but then, which would be the best way to get a copy exact of what I see underneath /mnt in to /distro/fedora ?
cp, tar, clobber?
home web server (running on port 21333). i'm running fedora 10 w/ LAMP and I can't get my php contact form on my website to send out mail. it looks like it sends but it doesn't (and I know the form works because it's the same one from my hosted web server). I've tried everything I can think of, disabled selinux, added apache to trusted mail users, changed the port to 2025 in case comcast blocks 25 (at least i think i did), added the port to the iptables and i have no idea where to go from here.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo a family member was very nice and got me a killer server for my house. Not sure what I will do with it just yet. I will post spects shortly. Its Intel raided 2 750G drive 2G CPU and I believe 2 or 4 G memory. Rack mount with a KVM on it.
I have narrowed it down to 3 OS choices. Ubuntu : I run this on my LT and find it very nice for that. Some nice Media server Sw out there for it. I do some side work on RedHat and for my current employer so I was thinking CentOS or Fedora so I have a system running a similar OS on it.
At home this may be a www or media server for me long term. Or I may just use it as a test system initially to work on these Linux versions. I know this is all subjective and depends on what I plan to do with the server in the long run.
But out of the Fedora and CentOS release which is better knowing I am doing work in Red Hat for my current employer?
I m trying to access a site through a perl script for a project of mine, and i use a system call fora wget.
The login form is this

I mean should i add in the --post-data all the hidden fields? should i try using perl's md5 function for the last two fields? anyone has any idea on what are the elements i should be sending along --post-data?
Is there a way to --load-cookies from mozilla or something similar instead of creating new cookies with wget?

View 5 Replies View RelatedIf you really want to learn C/C++, get set up on a Linux box with a full gcc dev system. I fixed up an old P4 Machine with 2gig ram and 80gig HD to install Linux on. Don't know anything about Linux yet but installing several distros for evaluation, but a thought occured to me. Is there a particular distro that has this "full gcc dev system" in the initial install or is this something that I will have to install after the OS is up and running on the machine? Is one distro better suited for programming than another?
