I already have XP, I installed Fedora to a partition on another hard disk to make it dual OS. During installation, I choose XP for default OS in boot loader. Now the problem it only reboot into XP, I am not able to choose which OS boot.
View 6 RepliesI have a laptop, installed with window XP. I just installed Fedora Core, re-formatted all parition on the system, and installed default packages. The installation was successful. But after I took out the installation CD and reboot the system, chose Fedora core (the only banner), the screen just become green, and nothing else from there.
The only thing I am not 100% sure is, during the installation, my monitor was probed as unrecognized. I have tried both 'go with default' and specify one "LCD 1024x...", but either way, after the installation, system won't reboot.
I have installed the Fedora on my laptop with Vista installed first. Now I am using the OS separately fine. I just choose which Os to boot in to every time I turn the machine on. However, I now need to do certain task that I need to switch between two OS. Wonder how to switch to Vista when I am using Fedora without rebooting? and vice versa.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.

I had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

And, i has use "EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition" create 2 partition on my USB flash drive (2GB MBR with ubuntu 11.04, 2GB data volume). I has able to run my Ubuntu11.04 from USB and i was so happy and then start installed VLC player, Ubuntu Tweak, unrar programs. after those programs installed, i reboot the Ubuntu then i encounter all installed programs were missing,,,,the O/S back to it's original state. How am i can installed programs in USB flash drive and keep it on USB flash drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Netbook Remix(Karmic, I think) on my Samsung N130 netbook as a dual boot with Windows 7. It had been working fine, I'd had no problems switching OS and I had restarted my computer many times without issue.
Today, I was on Windows 7, set it to hibernate when I left the house as I sometimes do, and when I came back and turned my computer on, first it asked which system I wanted to load which it never does after hibernation. I selected Windows, and it took me to the Samsung Recovery Solution screen for some reason, and I closed that. It restarted the computer, and when it turned back on it said GRUB loading, and rebooted again, and keeps looping that whenever I turn it on.
I tried removing Ubuntu using GParted from a flash drive, but I'm still stuck in the loop, and it's gotten rather frustrating.
I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get an external monitor hooked up to my laptop with the intention to use both simultaneously using TwinView. Actually, I'm not "trying to make it work": everything works fine, using NVIDIA X Server Settings. However, when I reboot these settings are lost and I have to manually expand my desktop again.
I've found that running NVIDIA X Server Settings as root should allow one to "Save to X Configuration File", in order to let it automatically load the right settings. When I click this option, however, I'm asked to manually provide a file name with my home folder as the default location. I'm confused how to proceed - where should I save this configuration? Or should I be taking a completely different approach in the first place? (note: KDE 'Display and Monitor' doesn't work. Only when I use the NVIDIA-thingy KDE will recognize that my desktop is expanded to a 3600x1080 resolution)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook. Everything works pretty well and I'm enjoying it so far. One problem - I have a Lexmark S405 inkjet printer - for which I installed drivers the other day. The install goes fine and the printer does work - but upon next boot, there is an error loading Kate - and then some sort of script editor pops up. Uninstalling the driver package seems to fix the error message but it's back upon re-install. Didn't have this with my Ubuntu VM on my desktop. The printer does still work.

Skype started to work well. However, after I rebooted the system, all I get is a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I am able ot get to tty by doing ctrl+alt+f2 but am not sure how to proceed from the above. I also erased the above packages thinking that that might solve. But it hasnot solved the issue.
I wish to set up a backup and recovery procedure for a linux machine. However, when I extract the archive, the system works fine until the next time I want to boot up. Then the system behaves as if it does not know what to do after running bios.Am I missing something simple? i am trying to install opensuse 11.2 to my vaio laptop i have win7 pro 64 bit already installed so i'm trying dual booting i have followed the below steps1- on windows, shrink the c partition and create a new unused volume for suse2- install the suse 11.2 on the new unused volume with hdd config like sda4 swap 4 gb sda5 20 gb / ext4 sda6 120 gb ext43- selected custom packages and started the installaton4- installation started smoothly and after installing packages it tried to reboot the machine at the end. But after this point the reboot operation has failed and gave a blank screen.
At the end the installation failed.I started the machine vaio boot logo comes and stops. i can't even enterbios setup or change boot options.I have unplaged the hd reset the partions, pluged it again and recovered win7So i think the installation damaged the file system.i have tried the above steps 2 times and came up with the same result.I have installed fedora 13 before with no problem.
can someone point me in the right direction as far as the GRUB goes. i have the partition all done already. and ubuntu is already up and running, but i am installing 7 now.

I am on a custom PC, with dual screens; one LCD, and one CRT, from which I installed OS X 10.5.6 from a retail DVD.
I installed OS X first, because I needed to format my HDD to use GUID partition table, because you can't install from a retail DVD without using GUID. Once OS X was installed, I partitioned my hard-drive into 4 partitions from the OS X disk utility. These partitions were HFS. I then used the Ubuntu Lucid x64 Live disk to format the 3 nre HFS partitions to use ext4, for two of them, and one swap. I installed Ubuntu as normal.
I re-booted, and GRUB recognized my OS X instillation, so I tried to boot into it. It went into OS X, but with some major problems. My LCD screen was going haywire, but my CRT seemed to be working, but it took on my LCD's screen resolution and place as the main screen.
I thought my OS X instillation was badly damages, so with Ubuntu still installed on the other partitions, I re-installed OS X, which I am on now.
I want to know how to boot back into Ubuntu, while still having the option to boot into OS X.
I installed 10.10, dual boot. (with xp pro)Did reboot.choose ubuntu from boot options.Now only have progress bar no gui.

2x320GB RAID1 - used for operating systems md126
2x1TB RAID1 - used for data md125
I have used the raid of size 320GB to install my operating system and the second raid I didn't even select during the installation of Fedora 14. After successful partitioning and installation of Fedora, I tried to make the second array available, it was possible to make it visible in linux with mdadm --assembe --scan , after that I created one maximum size partition and 1 maximum size ext4 filesystem in it. Mounted, and used it. After restart - a few I/O errors during boot regarding md125 + inability to mount the filesystem on it and dropped into repair shell. I commented the filesystem in fstab and it booted. To my surprise, the array was marked as "auto read only":

and the partition in it was not available as device special file in /dev:

how to install Debian after Windows is already installed. Could someone give me a brief guide to begin the process of installing Windows? When I installed Debian I already made a partition for windows (in the same hard disk), I hope I did it right.

There are many occasions when I would like to jump into XP from 11.2 with the VM. Searches can't seem to find any link to this specifically but this may just be me and the terminology involved.

Can i mount the partition on which windows is currently installed in (dual boot, win and ubuntu) and navigate through its folders and take files, eg. pics, songs... to place on my ubuntu desktop. Just wondering, im trying to get others used to linux enviroment and want to start transfering things wihtout making it too drastic for them. The process that i described above doesn't have to be exactly like that, but basically anything that gets me similar results.

So I decided to try something new and fresh. I wanted to try ubuntu. So I download the 64bit version from here. I made a 25GB partition. I then Wubi found out I didn't need the original file since it was downloading something else. I installed it, rebooted.
Windows comes up with a prompt:

I click on Ubuntu. This comes up: [URL]. I am fairly new and I don't know what to do. I did research and nothing really showed. I then burned the said 64bit version and tried to do a Live CD but it didn't reboot into ubuntu. I really want to try ubuntu? I am going to re-install again.
