I recently did a kernel update usingCode:yum -y updateAfter update while booting progress reaches till the end and it stops there, it doesn't progress. If I use earlier kernel for booting I do not have any issues.
View 14 RepliesI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 yesterday. When I opened rhythmbox music player, I dragged over some mp3 files to play. It asked me if I wanted to install mp3 support. Naturally I selected yes, as I have several times before. Everything appeared to install correctly and music started playing. The first track finished fine. The second track made it roughly 20 seconds and then the sound stopped. I switched back to the desktop that rhythmbox was on (I had been browsing firefox on the other desktop) and noticed that the progress bar for the song was moving very fast and would continue doing so on every song. The progress bar would cycle through the length of a 3:40 song in about 6-8 seconds. But there was no sound.
I should also note that the reason I used rhythmbox (RB) was because I tried to install Amarok 2.2, which did install, but I couldn't get the program to work when I opened it. So I decided to settle for rhythmbox. So the first time I encountered this error on RB was the first time I used the program, and the first time I used RB was after I had installed Amarok 2.2 and couldn't get it to work. Idk if this is relevant or not, but I figured I would include it anyway.
Anyway, I have tried a number of potential solutions:
1) Changing the hardware profile for my multimedia.
2) Making sure my bios is set up properly. I have a soundcard, so I disabled onboard audio.
3) I thought maybe Pulseaudio was the problem, but didn't try to resolve it because this thread from he Ubuntu forums appears to be outdated for Karmic Koala, so I didn't take my chances using it.
4) Uninstalling Amarok, however, I couldn't locate all the dependencies to uninstall them
5) Installing "libxine1-ffmpeg" manually since another forum on ubuntuforums had recommended that. However the deb-installer failed with this output
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libavcodec1d (>= 0.cvs20070307)
6) Booting to the LiveCD for Kubuntu (Kx) 8.04-2, Kubuntu 9.10, and Ubuntu (Ux) 9.10. I went through the process of opening RB, loading music, installing mp3 support. For Kx 8.04-2, I got an error telling me I needed to install "libxine1-ffmpeg" manually, which I did via deb-installer. Everything worked great. For Kx 9.10 and Ux 9.10, I got the already mentioned error about the unsatisfiable dependency. So I could go back to Kx 8.04-02 (which many of my friends here at LFO know this has been my favorite distro+version for almost two years now). However, I can't be stuck with it just because of some minor issues.
I should also note that video on firefox (e.g.; ......com) is very slow and usually greys out firefox until it stops working. Yes, I have installed flash player and jre 6.0 via synaptec. :D So this is apparently an overall multimedia problem, which doesn't surprise me because it seems that both Ubuntu AND Kubuntu have been having more multimedia problems since fall of 2009 (at least based on what I have gathered from forums while searching out my current problem). Whether that is related to the 9.10 releases and later, or not, I don't know.
Another option I have is to try Mint, which I have had very good experiences with in the past. But I don't want to leave the *buntu family as I am very partial to it and really enjoy the time-saving convenience of the deb-installer.

After installing the latest upgrades in Testing, KDE will no longer start. After logging in, the progress bar reaches about 80% and then stops. At this point the system is unresponsive, and I have to switch to another VT to reboot.
For the moment I'm using XFCE.
I just installed the latest updates for Fedora 14, and a restart was necessary so I did. Then, it didn't reboot! It hung when the cursive Fedora "f" was there for about 15 minutes. I had guessed that maybe it was doing an automatic fsck disk check, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I couldn't change to tty2 etc while this was happening and for all I knew, the system was frozen. Is there a way to see the load progress (the text) while booting?
FYI, after 1 extremely slow but eventually successful boot, everything is back to normal with rapid boot times.
I have tried this with many different configurations, however, I believe that the scroll bar that shows the progress of the boot is preventing it from changing successfully. I don't know how to switch it off. X is not installed. No gui, only tui.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have done a fresh text-only installation of Fedora 10 on a Dell Dimension E521 for the purpose of setting up a server. After installation I ran yum update to bring the system up to date. After the update, I rebooted the computer, but the boot process froze. I recycled power and pressed "I" after the Dell BIOS screen and the GRUB bootloader appeared. I selected the most current version, edited the kernel line by deleting "rhgb quiet" and replacing it with "3." After making this change, I continued with the boot and the computer stopped at "Starting udev:" I have two fedora 10 revisions showing in the GRUB bootloader, the original installation and the update after running yum.
I repeatedly tried rebooting both versions and, after about 30 attempts, the computer finished booting and got me to the command prompt. Reading through the forums indicated there might be some issue with my nVidia GeForce 6150 onboard video and fedora 10. So, when I got to the command prompt, I followed the instructions in the forums [URL] to load the rpmfusion drivers. This appeared to be successful and when I looked at /etc/X11/xorg.conf it appeared to be correct for the new nVidia drivers. After loading these new drivers I tried rebooting. Unfortunately, I have been trying now over and over to get back to the command prompt, but simply can't get past "Starting udev."
I performed the first update in 4 months to my Fedora 12 Constantine. I also removed a 'dial-up' package (figured i didnt need it) and the KDE package after the update. Firefox was not getting a connection to the internet at this point. The network view showed the ethernet as inactive. Everything besides Firefox appears to work fine.
I restart machine.
It boots until right after the fedora logo fills up. At this point my dual monitors go to sleep. No response from anything. When I start in interactive mode I hit y for everything. Everything works great until libvirtd, libvirt-guest, and local. After y on all three nothing happens. I can type on the screen but no response. It just sits there. I can boot into text mode and do whatever I want. What can I do? What other information do I need to move forward?
I have looked at the Xorg.0.?? i forget what its called. I am not versed in reading the messages in it. Same for the other logs I looked at.

Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.

2X 160GB 7200 RPM in RAID1 (Onboard Software RAID)
Super Micro X8DTI-8
I am doing a typical install with no special functions on a RAID1 onboard Intel array. I know the array works because I tested it by installing Windows Server 2003 which works fine. The RAID also shows as healthy in the BIOS.
This problem is very difficult to remedy because everything seems to install fine with Ubuntu but when you reboot after the install you get a blinking cursor _ and nothing else. It appears that something happened when loading the OS but it's impossible to get past the blinking cursor because you can't type anything or escape out of it. The only thing that it will register is Ctrl+Alt+Del which will restart the server.
The funny thing is it does not display the typical Sigkill and show processes shutting down. The screen goes black and it restarts only to return to the blinking cursor. I am on my 6th attempt at an install with ubuntu and I am seriously considering switching over to windows unless.
I am almost certain this is a RAID issue because I can load the Ubuntu on 1 drive without any issues but I always get the blinking cursor in the RAID.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu for a few years now and this is the first time in a while that I've been really stumped. My power went out earlier today. Of course my Ubuntu box was on, so it had a hard shutdown. When it booted back up upon power coming back on, it went to the normal Ubuntu startup screen with the orange progress bar, but stopped about halfway through. It then goes to a black screen, with a continuous stream of y's scrolling down the left of the screen. Like this:

So, I try selecting other sessions (Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc) and only get anything from F1, where it says "Starting Up... <cr> Loading, please wait..." I then reboot into recovery mode and get the same continuous y's. However, now when I press Ctrl-Alt-Del, I get the Recovery Menu, which lets me into a root shell. Below is my fdisk -l output.

I have a full install on a dedicated partition. And the problem persists. I have tacked it down to the driver for my video card [nVidia 9600m GS]. When I disable the driver, it somewhat returns to normal [it works fine on shut down, but boot up is still buggy]. However, this makes Docky complain about compositing [it will still work, but there's a black void around it] not being enabled. I also assume that lacking the driver will cause problems if I try to do anything 3D.

Ive used unetbootin and Universal USB installer to setup the ISO on the drive, as well as trying Ubuntu version 10.04 and 9.10. The problem is that during the boot it stops at a line reading "SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 CBIOS Copyright ...", no error messages, it doesn't appear to be frozen as there is a blinking cursor under this line. The boot performs normally up to this point, it happens when, during a normal boot to vista, it says "boot from CD/DVD" then loads windows.It shouldn't be a hardware issue, the computer is pretty new, and I had an older version of Ubuntu install on it temporarily.

I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise.This program uses OSS, as does darkice.When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. However, during booting it stops somewhere half way, giving me only a black page but with a functioning cursor arrow. I can't do anything with it though. I re-booted in recovery mood and managed to boot up as root using the command 'startx'. How can I get back to "my own" log-in from here, with my own settings etc? There's obviously something missing during boot-up but where do I look?

my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).
i use a fedora distribution, when accessing administrator->add remove software (GUI) is there a way to know the download progress/download rate of the selected packages ? as i cant see any progress or indication on what is happening there..i know i can use the terminal to get packages but i was wondering if there is a way to see the progress when using the GUI instead of the downloading icon on the button left. as for ex an ubuntu distribution shows a progress of each package status while downloading as now i select the packages and it only tells me that it is downloading but on what speed or what are the packages left/downloaded i don't know.

What I have done is, freshly installed Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the entire Hard Drive (680GB), then fired up the live CD and told the installer to resize sda1 (The windows partition) to about a 60:40 ratio. I intend to dual boot the system
Now the thing is, it's been running for half an hour now and there's no progress indicator on the installer so I don't know if its actually doing anything. Well there is a progress indicator but it's nonsensical, it just moves backward and forwards. The HDD indicator LED on my computer is flashing every now and again, but not constantly as I expect it to?
i got the following issue. I have Ubuntu 9.10 (x64) on an AMD Phenom II X4 with a Gigabyte mainboard (chipset AMD 785G) and a SATA II hard disk. Kernel version is 2.6.31-17-generic. After selecting Ubuntu from grub boot menu, I get a black screen and that's basically it.

The odd think is, that this happens just from time to time (~50% of all boot attempts). Booting into failsave mode does work every time. Booting an older kernel (not failsave) doesn't work every time either.
I upgraded to 10.04 weeks ago and have been running it fine.Now when I start up my computer it gets to the GRUB loading stage (counts down to 0), then the monitor goes blank for a moment and then several thin scratchy lines about an inch wide in total appear across the top of the monitor and it just freezes there.The boot process just stops.I've had these lines appear ever since I upgraded, but they were always momentary and the boot process just continued. Where do I start in diagnosing and fixing this?

View 5 Replies View Related10.10 32 bit on a pc with a GForce 9600 GT VGA and P5KPL-SE mainboard.Sometimes, while booting, after the letters on the screen message " booting from hd1..." get thinner, everything stops and I dont get the purple login screen. After switcihng pc off and rebooting, usually, everything is OK. I used proprietary nvidia driver version current and after switching to version 173 (considering that it might had to do with the driver), maybe it somewhat improved things but the problem persists. IT is not that terrible to reboot except for that I use this pc at work and switching it off sometimes starts the disk check for errors utility which lasts long since disk is 1 TBI tried to read dmesg but am not familiar with the terms I show and gave up
