Ubuntu :: How To Change HP Mini Screen Resolution To 800x600

Nov 7, 2010

I am using HP Mini 1000 Series with Ubuntu 10.10 (later installed with xubuntu-desktop). I want to run a wine application which requires 800x600 resolution. However, my current resolution is 1024x576. The other available solution is 640x480. Previously, I used pre-installed Windows XP, it allows me to change the resolution to 800x600 by clicking the "List All Modes" button at the display setting, then I can choose the 800x600 resolution. So, I think HP Mini is also able to support 800x600 screen resolution. May I know how can I do it in Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: Screen Resolution Changed To 800x600?

Oct 26, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for about two years now, then suddenly today (after my PC accidently lost power) the screen resolution changed to 800x600 (it is, in fact, a widescreen monitor, and this resolution looked 'zoomed in'). The only two resolutions detected with xrandr were in the 4:3 ratio (800x600 and something worse). I followed some instructions, trying to reset the resolution to 1024x576.

I got as far as

$ xrandr --newmode "1024x576" ...

then,

$xrandr --addmode default 1024x576

but when I

$xrandr --output default --mode 1024x576

I a message to the effect of 'your screen can only support 800x600 or less'. Ah-ha, I thought, you stupid machine; this screen has had a greater resolution for over a year.

And so, from System->Preferences->Monitor, I forced the computer to switch to this new resolution. When prompted, I reset.

My current problem is that when I turn the computer on, the monitor displays a floating 'Input Not Supported' sign. I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd, and now all 'xrandr' and 'cvt' commands return:

Can't Open Display

My first priority is to get the computer back to it's less-broken 800x600 state;

EDIT: I'm running Ubuntu 10.04

Ubuntu :: Screen Resolution Will Not Go Above 800x600 Anymore

Dec 12, 2010

After the latest kernel update (2.6.32-26), my computer will no longer start up with a screen resolution higher than 800x600. Before this update, my computer would sometimes startup with this problem, but this could usually be fixed with a restart (or two if necessary). At this resolution the panels and a lot of tool-bars will not display properly, so I am limited as to what I can do using the GUI.

my video card is an S3 unichrome (I think. It is built-in to the motherboard so I don't know for certain) my screen is an old ctr one I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on the 2.6.32-26 kernel

Ubuntu :: Display Limited To 800x600 Screen Resolution On 9.04 On LG Flatron L1718S

Oct 3, 2010

I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated, the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources.

His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and finished. I shut down the machine, unplugged my monitor and plugged it back into my machine, which is a Intel Celeron with a 2.4GHz processor, 1,5GB RAM, 80GIG X 2 Seagate IDE hard Drives, 2 DVD Drives, an LG Spermulti-DVD rewriter and a BENQ DC W2000 rewriter. My graphics card is NVidia GeForce NV34 FX5200 Series, 256MB RAM Graphics Card. Suddenly everything on the desktop is so large, and the maximum resolution now is 800x600. It becomes 640x480 if i add Nvidia drivers, version 173. If I switch over to Windows XP, Service Pack 2, I have no resolution issues there. Nvidia drivers are loaded there as well. No issues with resolution there. To test the screen again, I plugged my monitor back into my friends computer that I mentioned earlier on. The resolution is stuck on 800x600. After plugging the monitor back to my computer, I tried to edit the X.conf using "sudo nano", adding the desired parameters, like undetected screen resolutions, monitor name, device, etc, but nothing worked.

I always had to resort to the backed up configuration file for XOrg. The latest Ubuntu 10,04 Lucid Lynx picks up my monitor with a maximum resolution of 1024x768.The Mandriva One 2008 Live CD also gave me the same result like Ubuntu 10.04, this time giving me more higher resolution options. Strangely enough, from my Ubuntu 9,04 and older, after several tests, the resolution is still stuck to 800x600. When I press the AUTO RESET button on my monitor, the screen says "Processing image Auto Adjustment-For Optimal display, change resolution to 1280x1024". A factory reset did not help. The resolution was perfect until I plugged my monitor into my friend's computer, the one with the 2,93GHz processor. I took another friend's monitor, a HP Cathode Tube Monitor, a 17 inch as well, and plugged it to my machine to test the resolution. The results were glorious! All resolution options were shown, from the lowest "320x240" to beyond "1280x1024". Plugged it back to mine, the same result showed: 800x600 resolution, the lowest being 320x240. I kindly ask for advice on how I can be able to get all the screen resolution options available on my Ubuntu 9.04, like before, because it shows the maximum of800x600, lowest- 320x240 on "display" in "System--Preferences".

General :: Screen Resolution Settings Higher Than 800x600 With Ubuntu 10.04 Inside Virtual PC

Oct 3, 2010

This is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.

I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.

Debian :: Distorted Screen Resolution On HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT)

I just installed Debian (lenny) on my HP 2133 Mini-Note (KX869AT). I've managed to get everything working, even the Broadcom wireless adapter, but the display is too large for the actual screen size. To get the screen to a more manageable resolution, I did copy the xorg.conf file of another HP 2133 Mini-Note user. (It was probably a different model; there are several versions of the HP 2133, hence the model number in the description.) Icons and things hide off-screen. The text on the GNOME panel is quite large.

Ubuntu :: Broken - Stuck At The Resolution 800x600

Feb 23, 2011

It started when I first installed Ubuntu because I heard it was good and I felt like a change of OS, but it didn't recognise my monitor and because of that it was stuck at the resolution 800x600 (I think) and so it didn't quite look right, also it made going on the Internet really awkward, so I searched on the internet to find out how to fix it and I couldn't find anything that worked, so instead I installed Ubuntu netbook version thinking that it would recognise it because it is meant for laptops, so I put the ISO on a USB and it installed but if I tried to do it again it just tried to reinstall itself (I think it was just because I didn't delete the other Ubuntu) and so I just stopped using the USB, so I eventually gave up and tried to delete linux.

I used the Wubi installer for the original Linux so I used that (in the C drive in the Ubuntu folder) to uninstall it too which looked like it uninstalled it fine, I then made the stupid mistake of using EASUS (I think, I cant check anymore) Partition editor and deleted all of the linux sections and made the C drive bigger, after it finished that my laptop doesn't boot up and im stuck at a black screen with it saying to reboot and insert proper boot device. With it not booting I couldn't do anything, but then I remembered the USB and so I put that in and now it boots to Linux, but I really want my windows 7 back because this linux isn't even installed and wont install, the only way I can use it is by exiting the installer and then using the ubuntu that doesn't really look right and doesn't save anything I do. Is there anyway to get my windows 7 back or am I stuck using this?

Intel Pentium Dual Core 2.40 Ghz cpu
Intel DG31PR desktop board
2 GB adata DDR2 (800 BUS) ram
NVIDIA Ge-Force 8400 GS NX84GS series PCI express

It's the first time I was installing a linux. First I collected an extra hdd for the installation. I used the entire drive for ubuntu 9.10 installation. It installed without any problem except the special features were turned off. It was said that the special features and animations would start only if their is a sufficient graphics processor. I picked up a solution and from the hardware drivers option, installed the nvidia graphics card. Problem started when i restarted my pc. The resolution automatically changed into 800 X 600 px. I changed it to 1280X1024 (which is highest for my monitor). But when I restarted again, it again became 800X600 px. And it becomes like this everytime I restart.
