Debian :: Uswsusp Removed - Freeze The New Candidate Is Not Considering In Squeeze
Oct 2, 2010
I'm running squeeze. Some time ago uswsusp was removed from testing. I have a laptop that I would like to suspend to ram occasionally. On the developer bts page they say that because of the freeze in squeeze the new candidate for uswsusp is not considered. I see it has bugs. What does one do in this kind of situation? For some reason a while back I removed uswsusp from my system. Was that a colossal mistake?

I'll start at the beginning. The problem i am about to describe occured in ubuntu 9.10 for the first time (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/480850) and is ironically partly responsible for my switching to debian. which i don't regret, but it seems i can't run from the bug any longer because now it's in squeeze, so i want to fix it or make a proper bug report:
Steps to Reproduce:
1: Suspend Laptop to RAM
2: Resume from Suspend
3: Wait and see, preferably monitoring top:
At some random time, ranging from immediately (black screen after resume) to several hours later, the system will become unresponsive. Switching to tty1 or Alt+Print+K does not work, Alt+Print+REISUB does work. Each freeze is anticipated by a random process (this time it was mandb, was installing something) hogging 100% of CPU, then the System becomes gradually unresponsive within a minute or so (panel, metacity, finally mouse cursor freezes too).
Alternatively, in case of a black screen immediately upon resume, Alt+Print+K works (EDIT: or not), and the system remains usable.
Additionally, i don't know if this is related, i noticed one process using 9999% of CPU for a second according to top, just thought i'd mention it.
This bug constitutes a regression, suspend does work flawlessly on this Laptop in Lenny.
The above is how it presented itself at the beginning on a fresh squeeze install, however, after two days of trying, i additionally get kerneloops messages i did not get before (again, after at least one suspend to ram) and after that the system becomes generally unstable (random applications won't properly open or terminate, including nautilus, evolution, iceweasel). Can this be due to secondary damage from the freezes and alt+print+reisubbing repeatedly?
The good news is, apart from this probably already damaged squeeze install, i have another one on one of my playground partitons, where i avoided suspend so far, so i can still try things out there. (it's kde, but i don't think it's related to the desktop environment).

I have a problem with mouse and keyboard. Both freeze within 30sec to half an hour after logging into squeeze 64bit (using gnome). My hardware is Asus P7P55D EVO (tested with linux according to ASUS) with Intel i5 760 CPU. I use IBM keyboard and Trust PS2 mouse. I also have MSI HD4350 graphics card, that was at least listed on Ubuntu to be supported, worked fine also with Lenny.
When using same combination with Lenny (64-bit) I never found any problem with either keyboard nor mouse, even running long nights. However there was need to upgrade to Squeeze since it has newer kernel supporting the sensors on board my MB. I used same mouse and keyboard also on Ubuntu 9.10 and had never problems. However when I upgraded to new MB I started with Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit version and experienced same keyboard and mouse freeze as I have now in squeeze. Only way out from this status is hard reset using PC reset button.
I connected with putty to my linux box and found following (while the linux box was on frozen state) from dmesg on keyboard: :/var/log$ dmesg | grep -i keyboard [ 1.064628] input: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard as /devices/platform/i8042/serio0/input/input0

I installed hibernate by Code: sudo apt-get install hibernate . And it breaks the first time I use it. When I try to resume the system, it is just stuck there for at least 10 minutes with the ventilation fan spinning at maximum, after showing something like "successful resume" etc. That forced me to restart the computer and obviously there's a bug. So I remove it. The next time I restart my system, there's the following message: "resume: libgcrypt version: 1.4.4"
Although I can still enter the system, I'm quite uncomfortable with this message since it shows up every time. So I also removed uswsusp. Now everything returns to normal, But my question is, since I previously used hibernate, and the computer put everything into an img file for resume and stored it somewhere on the disk. I guess the img file hasn't been deleted and that's why I continue to see "resume: libgcrypt version: 1.4.4". Probably the computer detects some file and tries to resume using it, but fails, so it then restart a new session. Is it correct? and how can I find the file and delete it manually? When I run hibernate, I think I saw a message showing where the file is stored, but I don't remember where it was.

Unless I am mistaken, the 'hypermail' package has recently been removed from unstable.
I don't know if this is permanent or if it is just in preparation for the upcoming release.
In case it might be permanent, I thought that I'd download the deb from stable and stick it in a new directory '/var/local/apt'. Then I ran 'dpkg-scanpackages' in that directory and sent the output to '/var/local/apt/Packages'.
Unfortunately, when I run 'aptitude', 'hypermail' still shows up under the 'obsolete' section, even after I do a package update.
Have I done anything obviously wrong?

I knew this would eventually happen, though I had to remove my NVIDIA video card after the fan went out (again) & the card burned out.Now I can't get the machine to boot to GUI.I tried some things, though nothing was specific to such a simple & routine task (I imagine video cards go out occasionally, & with Linux, that would require totally different video settings).

I have corrupted my /usr/ partition. I thought I recovered my server thingies okay. The problem is with gnome desktop. It won't show the login screen and furthermore there's a lot of error in ldconfig messages -- because of the corrupted /usr/ partition.I started picking out these erring files -- using aptitude purge and the rm command if it cannot be purged...That's how I tried to clean my /usr/ corrupted partition. How do I know I managed to cleanly removed all traces of the desktop gnome? -- also how could I install the desktop again.

I've got a strange problem with my last "aptitude safe-upgrade". It had removed all my kde 4.3 and packages I have installed, I don't know why!
This is what aptitude removed :

I'm running a Debian on a laptop (actually a netbook: Asus EEE 1001PX) as a cheap homeserver. However I'd like it to automatically "shutdown -h NOW" when I remove the AC plug (switch it off at the wall). Otherwise I have to ssh to it and call it myself, and that just sucks Can I somehow detect the removal of AC power and upon that run a script ?

I've found a serious bug in KMail 4.14.1 (Debian 8): When you delete an attachment from an HTML message, all other content of that message (i.e. the whole body part) will be destroyed.
How to reproduce:
Create an HTML ("Rich Text") e-mail message and save it as draft (or send it if you like)
Mark your saved (or sent) message, right klick on the attachment and choose "Delete Attachment"
The content of the body will be replaced with text like this:Code: Select all. You deleted an attachment from this message. The original MIME headers for the attachment were:
Content-Type: application/pdf
name="test.pdf"
filename="test.pdf"
This problem is specific to HTML (Rich Text) messages. It doesn't apply to plain text messages.

At one point, I thought I needed pulseaudio for sound, so I messed around with installing it, even though at the time I had ALSA installed. (suffice to say, I know very little about linux sound). Pulseaudio never did work, I removed it with aptitude. But now ALSA seems to reach to pulseaudio for some reason.
Code:
More confusing is that there are no "alsa" looking processes in ps -A. But apparently, the basics are there
Code:
There's only one thing in init.d that seems relevent to alsa:
Code:
But doing this does not help anything. Does anyone know what to do from here?
And because I'm curious, how come I get sound from Flash Player and Audacity with no problem?

I've been using Debian for a few years but always on dedicated boxes and/or VMs.
Finally decided to dual boot Debian and Windows on my main Desktop PC.
Installed as I normally would using, however this time using a seperate drive (one for the existing Windows 10 install and the other for Debian), Debian install detects that windows has an EFI partition and sticks an entry in there, which is fair enough, and everything working fine. Then I spent some time configuring all my software and set it all up just the way I like it. I've rebooted Debian a few times to check it's working correctly and it is.
The issue arrives when I reboot and load into Windows 10. It boots fine.
However after a further reboot GRUB no longer loads... and the machine just boots directly into Windows 10.
After doing some further digging into my EFI partition (and reinstalling various times) it would appear that after a reboot Windows 10 deletes the entry GRUB creates in my EFI partition after EVERY reboot.
Done some googling and most people advise turning off 'fast boot' in Windows as it locks certain partitions to facilitate the machine going into hibernation, only to find that it's always been turned off on my machine (I recall due to a driver issue with my graphics card this had to be turned off when I installed Windows 10).
I've found this article on the Ubuntu forums : [URL] .... however I've tried their steps and windows is still doing a hostile takeover of my EFI partion after a reboot!
Any way to stop Windows 10 from interfering with my EFI files after a reboot? (without doing the obvious thing and kill Windows off).

I have installed on an Acer Aspire One netbook. The same problems with the Netbook Remix and Gnome.
(1) RESTART is hit and miss. It gets stuck and I have to do a hard shutdown (press the on/off switch for a few seconds)
(2) WIRELESS CONNECTION is hit and miss. The Connection Information goes missing. Have to shutdown & restart for it to work (restart never works)
(3) APPLICATIONS FREEZE all of a sudden. The mouse stops working and the keyboard stops working. I have to do a hard shutdown. Restart does not work.
(4) RHYTHMBOX launch is hit & miss. The little icon appears in the tray but I can do nothing - can't ask it to Show Rhythmbox and can't shut it down. Have to use System Monitor and kill the process there. IF MY MACHINE HAS NOT FROZEN DOWN COMPLETELY.
(5) GOOGLE CHROME and FIREFOX browsers run quickly when they start, and then, as time passes, run more and more slowly, until the freeze the whole computer.
