Ubuntu Installation :: Don't Have DVD Drive To Back Up System

I'm planning on dual booting my netbook with Windows 7 and UNR.However, given that I don't have a DVD drive to back up my system I was wondering if the "Backup Partition" on my harddrive (which as far as I know, was pre-installed) is the same as these disks.Now another problem lies in what happens if all goes south. Do I lose all three partitions? (Ubuntu, Windows, Backup).I suppose that wouldn't be end of the world. I still have another (main) computer running Vista. Still...
I've dual booted my Vista before and while the main job went withou major incident...I do have a bad history of screwing up one or both partitions.Also, will GRUB still work okay with Windows 7? I'd hate to install UNR and then have the boot loader not let me into one (or both OSes).Without the recovery disks I don't really have a safety net. I do have an external, but it already has stuff on it (my Mac HDD finally gave out, and the ext is a mirror of the HDD as death, which is stuff I do not want to lose). So as a last question (in case you know the answer) will backing up NetBook's HDD using the Windows Backup create a new folder of backup in the external, or use the entire external?

I have been using lucky backup to backup my files. However, I am unable to get a list of all packages that are currently installed, turn it into a file, and then back that file up as well with this gui.Lucky-backup's execute function does not work.I would like to have my system backup all appropriate directories upon connection of an external usb drive.I would also like to run a variation of the following command:sudo dpkg --get-selections > /path to external drive/Linux Backup/app-list.log(I need to overwrite the file on every connect- not add to it! What needs to change to this?)1. What commands would I need to use to backup certain directories?2. How can I turn the above mentioned command to OVERWRITE the current file on the drive, and not simply add to it?3. Most importantly, how do I run these commands both immediately upon mounting of the drive, AND/OR "on command" without having to type it all out every time?

How to format hard drive (with ubuntu 10.10 maverick, 32-bit vs.) and, after it will have been formatted, bring all system settings and programs which I run know back e.g. Compiz, browsers and other (of course without installing each one of it separately)? Is it possible to copy some parts of the HD and copy it after format?I can add, that I'm using now three partitions: dev/sda1/ (with Win7 OS � 64-bit, NTFS); dev/sda3 (with ubuntu 10.10 32-bit vs.; ext3) and dev/sda4 (linux swap); dev/sda4 (NTFS for storing files).

I'm a Linux college course student and can't et help from my "instructor". As part of my class, I've installed Fedora 12 on a secondary hard drive. I don't know the first thing about Linux and am totally lost trying to get back to my other hard drive to access the Windows XP OS. All my stuff for the courses I'm taking this summer are stored THERE. Can anyone help me with very simple, easy to follow instructions for how to get back to Windows AND also have access to Linus on the secondary drive?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and I have been keeping it updated via update manager.Last night the update manager popped up and I selected to update all required updates without checking what the updates were.While shutting down I noticed that I needed to reboot to complete the update, so I rebooted.After reboot the wireless network card disappeared. So I moved the PC and plugged in the ethernet cable. Oddly sometimes it shows disconnected for no reason and I have to reboot.What's even worst is that Ubuntu now locks up completely within 15 minutes of a reboot.None of the alt+sysrq commands do anything!How do I find out what the updates were and is there any way to I revert my system back to pre updates without having to reinstall?

Currently, my disk layout is: 20GB(windows-ntfs) / 250GB data-ext4 / 20GB ubuntu-ext4 / 4gb swap
Since I no longer use windows, I want to move ubuntu to the first place.
What do I need to change in configuration files, grub and anywhere else?
Shoudl I keep swap where it is or move it, too?

I have a second hard drive in my desktop and both the main dirve and second drive are 250GB. I use the second drive for backups, both manual and using back in time. The other day I noticed that the second drive was formated in FAT32. If I go to disk utility and look at the drive it says:Usage:FilesystemPartition Type:Linux (0x83)Type:FAT(32-bit version)Is this ok? I thought in Linux it should be Ext4. So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.

Sometimes you get more than you ask for and in this case, I did: I had no idea (had the computer for a few years now) that I was running a dual core 64 bit machine. The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

A local store built a brand new dual core system for me about a month ago with a 1TB drive and installed Karmic on the entire drive. I now have a piece of external hardware that requires XP and simply will not work in XP in Virtualbox. I have purchased another 1TB drive, and my thinking is to create an XP partition of about 2-300GB and leave the rest of the drive for another Karmic partition and dual-boot. I don't care which drive is primary (unless there is a reason I should).
I was thinking of unplugging the karmic drive and putting the new drive in it, installing XP on it, then adding the Karmic drive back to the system and editing one of the boot files to add the other operating system.
If so, which boot file should I edit? Which drive should be primary? Or, is there a better, easier way to do this?

I am trying to install a linux distrobution on a laptop that can only boot off a cd or harddrive (or network? not sure), except that it has no cd drive and no operating system. That's right, no floppy no USB no CD. I read on the internet a chap installed Ubuntu with these conditions by taking out the harddrive and installing an old copy of Ubuntu on it on another computer with a disc drive, and then putting it back in his laptop and upgrading.
Now I have installed DOS 7.10 before on this laptop hard-drive and it worked, but it wasn't very useful, being a text based system. I have tried installing Windows XP (only because I am familiar with it) but my installation CD is OEM, and doesn't seem to like it. So I put the ubuntu 4.10 cd in my desktop with the CD drive after clearing all data off the laptop hard-drive (DOS 7.10). Then the cd boots and I am given the menu to install ubuntu. So I press Enter, it starts installing and then freezes at the language selection screen. So what is my problem? I have pressed lots of keys in order to get some response, but nothing. I waited 10min for something to happen, but nothing did.

I have 6 hard drives that have 9.10 and 10.04 on them. Not as a dual boot, but some hard drives have different versions on them. When I have plugged the drives in a couple of weeks later, the grub is gone and system will not boot. I get like a grub 1.5 error and that is all the options I have. Does anyone one know why this happens? Nothing on the drives but the O/S to get rid of windows. All drives worked perfect until they were removed and installed later.

So I was installing 10.10 to be my only operating system on my 3 year old custom built computer and all of a sudden it stopped working at the point of "whenever you are ready" but not letting me go forward because it still was loading. I waited a long time and it was frozen so I restarted my computer and now I don't have anything on it. No operating system at all. Except the symbol " _ " blinking rapidly. Nothing is working and I just want to run 10 on my desktop

I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.

My father installed Kubuntu to his external hard drive to try it out, however, it is running extremely slowly. It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.

I'm trying to create a persistent live Jessie system on my 8GB USB drive.
If that matters, I'm currently on an Arch Linux system, and I partly followed what's on the relative wiki (Pages Create a new MBR for a USB stick, Manually create a USB flash installation and Install Syslinux), plus a CrunchBang post explaining how to make a persistent live USB out of any Jessie-deriving distro (like their BunsenLabs Hydrogen).
The problem is, even if Debian boots up more than fine, the system isn't persistent at all.
Here's what I did (I know some passages are redundant, but still...):
Downloaded the Cinnamon flavor of Jessie via torrentErased the old MBR
Code: Select all# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1 && syncCreated a 1.1G W95 FAT32 (LBA) active partition and used the remaining space on a Linux partitionFormatted the first to FAT32 and labelled it "Debian64". Formatted the second to ext4 and labelled it "persistence"

I have a 160Gig and a 40 Gig drive.I would like to install the system on the 160 Gig, and use the 40 Gig drive as a storage for backups or whatever.It appears in the installation process that I am required to use a mount point, which would then turn the drive over to the root system, which would not allow it to be totally available to me.I just want to format it to ext3 filing system.Coffeecat, if you are out there and see this, strange things are happening to the 40 Gig drive - it says it is using 2 gig, but it is totally empty of all system files, hidden files, trash, etc. and it is being imaged in the media folder in root. I believe I have messed this install up to the point of no return and think I should go ahead and start over.

how to fix this (10.04 Ubuntu x64):
A couple of weeks ago, my CD/DVD drive stopped working. I'd put in a disk, the light would flash, but it wouldn't appear as a mounted drive. Thinking the drive had finally died, I bought a new one. Same problem.
The drive is recognized by BIOS. I have it as try to mount first in BIOS, and if I put in the Ubuntu boot CD, it boots.

into /etc/fstab, and then mount -a, the drive contents appear and are accessible. However, as expected, the system chokes on boot if there isn't a CD in the drive, and I have to mount -a manually every time I start the system. Ugly.
So this is pretty clearly a software OS problem. how I can get the automount for my CD/DVD drive back?

What file system should I use to partition a slow and old hard drive? I know that ext2 was best for old computers which mine is not but I am using an old hard drive for extra storage and I was curious if anyone knew if using ext2 or ext4 would show any performance differences.

Whenever I'm dealing with large numbers of computers that need to have identical windows installations put on them, I love using Symantec/Norton Ghost to image the NTFS partition (just making the .gho file the size of the disk I've used, instead of the 160/320GB full volume size), and then uploading it automatically to a windows share.I'd love to be able replicate this exact process with Ubuntu. I have one computer that's ready to go, and a few dozen more that I'd like to quickly get that same image on.
I've heard that there's a command called dd that can make disk images, but I'd really like some sort of boot disk that can allow me to make an image, save it, then run the boot disk on another computer to allow me to reconnect to the server and dump that image on that computer. Ghost 4 Linux doesn't have a network/server component, I think.even if such solutions cost money, I'd love to know if they exist or not.

I'm learning with a local intranet server with Ubuntu Server 10.04. It works well:^) I have a back-up question: I want to buy a hard drive of some kind to back-up to. I imagine a USB Portable Hard Drive would work OK. I'd plug it in to the box and mount it and then run a back-up routine. Is a workable way to do it?

I accidentally wiped my mounted c drive with rm /media/MY_C_DRIVE/ -r (The actual path is /media/51FAEE1F4B26FD12/ - that's why I wasn't aware of it). After 3 seconds I realized that I just did something terribly wrong. I hit Ctrl+C to stop but it was too late. The important system files were gone and I couldn't boot into windows. So far, I have tried to recover the files with photorec. I could recover about 68,000 files from that c drive but the names are f000001.exe, f000002.txt, f000003.jpg,. I don't know what these files are and where to put them back. Is there any way to recover these system files?

I start up my laptop, and it works great for about an hour but then it starts to make a loud scratching sound and I know that sound is my HD and after I have to shut it down (by holding the power button), it takes a few tries to get it to boot normally. So I'm pretty sure my HD is the problem, so my question is how can I back up my system (I'm running Ubuntu 10.4)? Just in case something really bad happens. I remember there was a thread sometime ago and a guy there said something about a program that would create a iso of the whole system, and it would back up everything even programs and stuff. So can anyone help me with this? (Btw the search feature is not working for me) Also if you wanna buy me a new HD you can do that too XD.
