Debian :: Unable To Get Sound On 5.0.3?
Jan 22, 2010
I have loaded Debian 5.0.3 onto my desktop and have no sound at all. I've completely removed and re-installed ALSA, OSS, everything to no avail. Computer is a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P MB with AMD Phenom @ 3.4 Ghz and 4 Gb memory. Machine is dual boot with Win XP and sound works fine for Windows. I've tried the on board sound (Realtek 888) and an old PCI board. Both work ok on Windows but nothing at all on Debian.

I just installed a fresh install of Debian on my machine, and I have this very weird problem. If I run a song in rhythmbox, it just crashes, after 10 to 50 seconds. The only solution is to run:
alsa force-reload
And this will get it working for another 10 to 50 seconds. I only have installed Google chrome ontop of my base install. So why is Debian not giving me sound? This should be a known problem, and hopefully with a known solution, because it seems the problem is everywhere on the net, but the solution is not...
I wanted to add 1 thing. And that is that I have 2 sound devices installed, both supporting alsa. 1 onboard, 1 pci card. The strange thing is that only from the pci card, I can hear sound out of the speakers (after replugging the jack in the back off course ). But if, after an alsa force-reload, only the onboard sound card is detected, it does play the whole song, but does not output any sound.
PS, I have a this sound card: [URL]
PS2: The PC is a AMD Athlon 3000+ with a rather old sound card...

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I just upgraded to jessie (kde) and am not able to fully configure my sound. It was working on wheezy. I have tried alsamixer and managed to get sound (playback & record) through my front case connectors. Can't get anything out of my rear motherboard connectors.I also have a bluetooth headset which I have successfully paired but which doesn't show up as a sound device in pavucontrol.

my cousin recently brought me an old dell to see if I could get it working.he mainly wants to use this machine to record himself playing guitar.I immediately tried installing ubuntu, but found it to be unbearably slow.the computer is on the verge of being an antique at 1ghz and 256mb of ram.so I started looking for alternatives, and decided to give debian a shot since I'm familiar with ubuntu and know that it is based on debian.I installed Debian Lenny from the netinst ISO and find it to be much quicker booting and loading programs than ubuntu.I will most likely put debian on my desktop when I'm finished getting this poor old dell set up.
I'm unable to get sound output working properly.I have checked that the volume is not muted. while using pidgin, after sending a message the "message sent" sound starts "skipping" like a scratched cd and the only way to get it to stop is to close the progam completely. I am unable to hear sound or watch videos with totem (and most likely other players, but I have not tested any yet).the files load audio files show their tag information and the length of the track and videos load the first frame but the file never actually plays. when I try to record with Sound Recorder, the application locks up.when I try to record with Audacity the software doesn't stop responding, but also doesn't record.I tried un-muting the microphone (monitor) to check that the microphone I have still works, and can hear it over the speakers, so this leads me to believe that my hardware is in good working order, but that I have something configured improperly.

I have installed a Musix 2.0 distro which is based on Debian. My problem is that the sound card which is a Creative Sound Blaster is not either set correctly or does not have the right driver. It appears in the system as Audio PCI 128 and with the driver:
snd-ens1371.My mother board has over 1gb ram with a 900 mghz processor by AMD. No sound onboard, with an inserted sound card.

I'm setting up a new PC and hope to use the Planet CCRMA packages for some simple home recording projects. The PC has a 64-bit processor, so I've installed the x86_64 version of Fedora 10. I've done the basic steps of adding the Planet CCRMA repositories and installed their real time kernel, so I'm think I'm ready to try and get started. First, I need to get my sound cards set up right. I have an M-Audio Delta 1010LT card, which I'd like to use for working with music and the Intel HDA card built in to the motherboard, which I'd be happy to use for things like system notifications and other incidental sounds. Here is what the system tells me about the cards:
[code].....
The only ones that produce any sounds when I test them are the HDA Analog device and the Delta 1010 device, but the weird thing is that output seems to be coming out of the built-in output jack (on the motherboard) in either case. Does the OS route output from the Delta 1010 through the built-in card to its output jack? Also, I've connected only the first two RCA analog outputs from the Delta 1010 to my desktop speaker system - should I use a different pair of outputs for testing? Playing a CD directly from the CD drive works, but playing music files from Amarok does not. I'll leave it at that for now. I posted the information above to the Planet CCRMA mailing list threee days ago, but I haven't gotten any responses.

I can play sound files with aplay, esdplay, and vlc, but I don't get any sound from iceweasel and chromium.
I installed a squeeze base system (without gnome and without the standard system utilities), then added (using --no-install-recommends) xserver-xorg-core, xdm, fluxbox, alsa-base, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, iceweasel, chromium-browser. Here I checked for sound and there was none from the browsers. I have since installed vlc, esound-clients, alsaplayer-esd, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and other software that didn't look sound-related and didn't change the symptoms.
Setting ICEWEASEL_DSP to "aoss" or "esddsp" doesn't help. Neither does "chmod -R 777 /dev/{audio,dsp,midi,mixer,snd}". snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss are loaded. Both my account and root are in group "audio". Running the browsers as root doesn't help.
This is the output of chromium:
In case it makes any difference, all of this happens in a qemu-kvm virtual machine with an emulated es1370 soundcard. Same with sb16 soundcard.
I would prefer not to install everything vaguely related to sound in the repositories in the hope of things fixing themselves. That's just ugly, plus I have only 200MB free space left.

I made a recent update to my Squeeze system and got this weird problem. mplayer, VLC and firefox (.....) all have sound. But when I try to run Amarok I get nothing. I looked into the Multimedia panel on the KDE4 system settings, and its not showing any devices at all. Previously it used to show HDA Intel etc., etc. Now the entries are completely blank. How do I get KDE to recognize my hardware? Shouldnt it pick things up automatically?

I'm relatively new to debian, but an intermediate linux user. I've just installed wheezy and I'm having trouble setting sound up. When plugging my headphones in via the motherboard, sound works fine. Great. I plugged in my USB Sound Card (Audiobox 44VSL) and no dice. It's set as card 1 under aplay -l, yet no sound. I know this box works on GNU/Linux because I used to use it in Xubuntu a couple years ago with no problems at all.

I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

I couldn't connect my Micromax 300G modem in Debian Linux. From internet (in Windows Vista), I came across the information of USB_ModeSwitch and then I downloaded it. While going to install it, I came across the problem that TCL-interpreter is not available in Debian Linux. Then again I restarted my laptop in Windows Vista and connected my Micromax modem and from internet downloaded TCL8.5.10-src.tar.gz. But while going to install it, I came across the problem that " configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " . Also as presently, I am unable to connect my modem therefore I am unable to issue the code:" apt-get update ".

This motherboard has an on board sound circuit, which I disabled in the BIOS, because
I want to use the PCI soundcard by M-Audio called the Audiophile2496. But I can't get any sound, no matter what I do. I've tried everything, including removing pulseaudio, but nothing happens. envy24control mixer is installed.
cat /proc/asound/cards shows that the sound circuit is card 0 and the
Audiophile is card 1.
0 [ HDMI ] : HDA - Intel - HDA ATE HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfe8fc000 irq 46
[code]....
I tried to get Fedora to change default cards from card 0 to card 1 with the command:
alsamixer -c 1
I even got the alsamixer on screen, with the Audiophile set as its card, and adjusted the PCM levels up to 45. It didn't matter. Still no sound. This is NOT a computer problem because, on this same machine, in a different hard drive partition I have a different Linux distribution installed and it runs the Audiophile 2496 just fine.
On an older computer I run Fedora 10 and it has no trouble at all with its Audiophile 2496 sound card. What's up with Fedora 14 ? how I can get the sound going on Fedora 14 ?

I really need sound I do not have anything under Hardware, Output or Input in the Sound preferences. I've already tried OSS, I think I installed ALSA but I do not know how to work it. I've downloaded a tar.bz2 pack for alsa, where is a deb. I hate configuring stuff, I want something I can click and install.
