I tried to do Debian netinstall from minimum iso image in my brother's pc. My Network Interface card is Intel 82578DC GIGABYTE Network Connection. The installer gives a list of drivers to install but I don't know what to do. Should I download and install from first CD/DVD? Will it have appropriate drivers then?

I know I could just download the CD's/a DVD, but I would rather customize it for my laptop, and I've heard that's the fastest way. The problem is that I have to compile the drivers for both my wireless and my wired internet. I have guides to compile both the wireless [URL] and wired [URL] internet. I was wondering if there was a way to compile these drivers in a Netinstall (preferably the wireless, but wired if necessary)?

I have tried what it says here http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary but I only come up with a blank screen (and also invoke-rc.d gdm stop does not work either?) Surprised, i switched to KDE plasma display manager, and it worked flawlessly.So I opened up Konsole, and typed: gnome-shell --replace.I received this output:

which led me to think that gnome is not able anymore to detect my display driver. It is however working well: glxgears gives the usual values, and glxinfo does detect the correct driver.I thus searched the web for that error, and the only results that showed up were about changelogs / some obscure things.The xorg.conf seems perfect to me: pointing to the correct drivers, and having the correct values.I am having Debian Jessie with an r9 290x on the proprietary Omega drivers.
After the latest update of network-manager-gnome to version 1.1.90-3 , I see that I have to start the nm-applet in Testing from a terminal, otherwise I can't bring up my wired connection.
The usual nmcli networking on command is failing to connect, also restarting the network-manager.service with systemctl doesn't do anything, the only way to connect at this time is indeed to manually start the nm-applet from a terminal.
I've also spotted this message in the logs:

Could it be something wrong with my configuration (although , it worked before this update) or is it some bug in network-manager-gnome 1.1.90 ?
i am using Debian testing AMD64 with KDE 4.3.4 and KDE can not detect any hardware! When I plug in external drives nothing shows up on the device notifier. Also all the plasma widgets that have to do with hardware (hardware monitors etc.) do not work at all! What is weird is that I can see that hardware when I run lspci or fdisk -l. Also sound does not work with the KDE desktop but works just fine when I try to play music. Is it a bug or something that I configured the wrong way?

I didn't select a desktop environment as a preconfigured package, but only left "standard system utilities" checked.Once I rebooted, I logged in as root (on the command line) and ran "apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies gnome-icon-theme xdm", let all that pull in and installd then rebooted. As the system was booting, I could see all the services starting and whatnot, but when it gets to the line "Starting xdm..." the screen changes to black, but stays black for a good 2 minutes. I tried hitting some keys on the keyboard, as well as typingy login credentials, even though I can't see them, but nothing seems to work. I've tried rebooting several times

Since my Wi-Fi card, Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG, requires non-free drivers not provided within Debian install image, I am bound to use USB stick during installation process to get those drivers, iwlwifi-3965-1.ucode and iwlwifi-3965-2.ucode, to enable Wi-FI on my system. However, no matter what I do, I cannot get debian-installer to detect drivers present on the machine. I have tried virtually everything - downloading drivers from multiple sources, renaming drivers properly, using ext4 instal of fat32, using gpt instead of msdos, placing files in /firmware instead of root directory - but no matter what I do, the outcome is the same. USB stick seems to be working properly. Am I bound to downloading non-free image now, or is there a solution?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a new Dell monitor (U2715H), and even with beta Nvidia driver (355.06) on Debian testing x86_64, it doesn't detect highest resolution (2560x1440) when connected over HDMI to Nvidia Geforce GT 620. I have an HDMI 2.0 compliant cable, and according to Dell reps, the monitor should support 2560x1440 over HDMI.
Some suggested using xrandr to set the video mode explicitly. I tried doing it, and first got a EDID file with nvidia-settings, and run edid-decode. Where is what I got there:

I just purchased a Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset. It works fine in Windows but unfortunately the same can't be said for Linux. It doesn't even seem to be detected as when I use the command cat /proc/bus/input/devices I get

I checked Volume control and I have Headphone checked, and in switched Headphone is also checked. Actually... Maybe it is being detected... In the Device dropdown menu in Volume control I see "Logitech USB Headset". I checked that and the volume is turned up, speaker and microphone are selected in preferences... Sound is still coming out of my monitor's speakers though.
Debian Jessie does not detect one of my monitors (I have two) when I use the default drivers (nouveau) for my NVIDIA graphics card. It does work when I install the proprietary drivers, but then, after a couple of reboots, I get many problems (when I log in, it does not manage to load the desktop environment). I've tried this a couple of times unsuccessfully.
How to make the machine recognize the dual screen with the default drivers?
I downloaded this "debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst" iso image....But on the partitioning screen, after selecting the manual partitioning, it shows the whole hard disk without detecting the XP partitions.

However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.
- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?
In reply to my last question about Wireless incompatibility in Debian 5.0.3 'Lenny', I found out it was because of missing drivers that I chose to ignore, despite the notifications.Now I've got this problem again, this time with different hardware and a different distribution of Debian (Debian Testing 'Squeeze' i386). As well as asking me to load up ipw2100-1.3.fw (of which I already have), it asks me to load tigon/tg3_tso5.bin. Loading the firmware is no problem. Finding and downloading nthe firmware is the problem here.I've searched through packacges and bug reports for a dowload link, but I've only come across a bundle with the driver I need, as well as a few unneeded extras. IT doesn't work at all.

Every single theme has at least one or more broken UI element. In Arc, I'm missing highlighting in the context menu, and in Numix, some application's backgrounds are just completely black. All of these themes don't give me a urlbar. I'm also missing a lot of boxes. There is no box around the word "submit" in reddit, and neither around "cancel". If you go into the search bar, I'm missing the checkbox for "limit my search to /r/...". I know these themes work, because I had them working in my last install of Debian. Except, last time I used the XFCE iso instead of the netinst. Even default themes, like Raleigh, are not working correctly. I installed all the necessary packages like the gtk2 murrine engine, but if the default themes aren't working then something is definitely missing.
View 0 Replies View RelatedI just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

I agree, yes, but on booting I find that the netbook has not grub. I go back to usb stick that stole my grub and I use it to boot. I go to sunaptic and install grub, still nothing, the netbook won't boot without the usb stick.

I did find this, but I haven't installed Debian yet: [URL] .... Not to mention it's 5 years old, and the links are obviously dead. I'm somewhat inexperienced with Linux in general, and I've searched for incorporating driver modules into the install but couldn't figure it out.
Where can I find the driver, and how can I incorporate it into the install? I wanted to do the netinstall to have Debian as minimal as possible.
I installed Squeeze on a server today, and struggled a bit because the network card needed non-free firmware (Broadcom something). The server had no floppy, so I had to go and get a pen drive and put firmware from non-free on it to get it to work.
I agree on the political issues on this, but sometimes it's non-free or nothing.
So I was wondering if someone know of a patched netinstall, or know how to make one? Then I could give the pen drive away to something more useful that keeping non-free firmware. Warnings and questions about the non-free would also be nice.
I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card.What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?
