Debian :: Mounting A Smartmedia Card With Pccardctl Insert 0
Jan 14, 2010
I'm posting this here because I know the knowledge database here is reliable. I'm mounting a smartmedia card with pccardctl insert 0. I do not know where the device would be located in block, bsg, or in sX. I'm using fedora 12 for this.

When I insert my Olympus camera xD card in the built-in card reader of my laptop I have no idea how to see the content.
dmesg shows SmartMedia/xD card detected in socket 0:2
(I'm running Ubuntu 9.10)

I've tried to search online but I can't find anything that works on our netbook. The netbook has a default Squeeze installation. After inserting the microSD card (via a "microSD card adapter" into the built-in slot), when I double-click on "Computer" on the Gnome desktop, it shows "Multiple Card Reader", but I can't access it. fdisk -l doesn't show any new devices, but dmesg does show the following:
[ 2532.101119] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2542.344135] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2558.588138] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[ 2558.836073] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
[Code]....
I can't mount /dev/sdb or mount /dev/sdb1 (fdisk only shows "sda1-3"). The system simply reports that "special device sdb does not exist", although during one attempt I did get a message saying "block device sdb (or sdb1) something...".
It's imperative that I can access this microSD card. It will be put into my mobile phone so I can have the Star Trek: The Next Generation theme tune as the ringtone. I'm sure you all - as will all of humanity - realise the importance of this endeavour

I'm running Kubuntu Karmic on my Dell Inspiron laptop - about 200 bug fixes behind because my only available internet is a cellular connection on a crappy wi-fi router - and last night, I suspended it, but it shut down instead. Not a problem, it does this fairly often, figure the RAM gets jostled or something.
But when I go to boot it up, it gets stuck at the pre-loading screen before getting garbled and dropping to the shell, where it says "mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/[insert hex code here] failed: invalid argument". Of course, mounting /root/sys, /root/dev and /root/proc fails, (directory does not exist) and it gives me the busybox initramfs prompt.

Would it be possible to insert another wired network card into the router-connected computer, share the internet connection and be able to transfer files between the two?

I am having difficulty getting my DeVeDe created iso that I burned to a DVD to play on my Debian box. I have w32codec and libdvdcss2 installed on my Debian Lenny system. I have the Debian-Multimedia repository added to my sources.list file. I've been Googling for an answer since 8:30 a.m. EST and everything says I should be able to install the above codecs and play DVD video.
When I insert the DVD, Mplayer opens up, acts like it starts playing with a (streaming) tag and then clocks to 1 second and goes to "Paused"
I've even tried installing VLC to see if that mattered and it did not.

I have finally gotten Samba working! Turns out there was no domain set, even though I remember setting it during the install process...hich brings me to yet another question... Now that I have a mount command that works, how do I insert this such that it is run during the boot process? I want to automount a few Samba shares. Is this a good idea?If not why not? If so, where do I edit to add the mount command?

When entering insert mode in a text file i want to edit while using rxvt-unicode, there is a p being inserted and a whole new line is entered as well. when i hit the insert key, vim enters insert mode but also types a p and forces whatever line i am on down a line. if num lock is not on, it will not enter insert mode by pressing the insert key but if i type using the keyboard and not the number pad, it still enters text. vim/mode keys work normally in xterm. is there some unusual configuration required in order to get vim to behave properly within rxvt-unicode?

I put an SD card in a reader, got all the right signs from the kernel (SCSI device: sda; write-through; etc.)including its 2GB size.
When I try to mount /dev/sda1 I get 'floating point exception' as a response, and it won't mount.
I've never had that message returned from mount, and I can't find any reference to it.

I have an HPDV7 running 11.3.
I have a new 16GB SDHC memory card.
It is formatted FAT-32 LBA
When I plug the the card into the DV7's internal MMC/SD card slot, it automounts as /dev/mmcbkl0p1.
I can then access files (camera images) on the card with Dolphin, etc.
When I plug the card into an external card reader(USB interface), automount fails and I can see a long string of messages from dmesg. It is attempting to mount it as /dev/sdd, I see numerous I/O errors as it attempts to read various sectors.
The card reader is a Kingston FCR-HS219/1.
The 16GB SDHC card in the Kingston card reader combo works on my WinXP machine, so (apparently) the combo does work.
A 2GB SD card (FAT16) in the Kingston reader works on both WinXP and the HPDV7 11.3 laptop.

I am kinda new to Linux but because I started a linux-course I decided to install it on my desktop. Before I used Virtual Box or VMware so it was pretty straightforward but now I have a problem with booting into Win7. I decided to install Debian along with my Win7. From a hardware perspective the things are like this, I have 3 HDD, 2 on a RAID0 and the third will be the one with Linux. On the RAID0 matrix I installed Win7 first, all ok there.
Then I started installing Debian. I followed the installation wizard, I partitioned the 3rd HDD and selected it as the drive for Linux. Then after I installed Linux and rebooted I only saw Debian in the GRUBs boot options, no sign of Win7. I think it has to do with the RAID0 matrix which "houses" Win7. I disconnected the 3rd HDD, and now when I try to boot no sign of the Win7 bootloader thou the RAID0 is ok. The only message I get is "insert boot disk".

Few weeks ago modified my old mobile phone SE k750i by setting on it w800i firmware. After this my phone isn't really (fully automatically) recognized by Ubuntu (9.10) which is the small problem for me now. Linux recognizes it as a USB device, but doesn't automatically mount it, which is why I have to do that manually and that leads to read only permissions for my user.
Here are the few outputs:
lsusb
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 046d:c222 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / LCD
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 046d:c221 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 0fce:d028 Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:c018 Logitech, Inc. Optical Wheel Mouse
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:c223 Logitech, Inc. G15 Keyboard / USB Hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
dmesg | grep usb .....
I've tried to create a custom udev rule via this thread, by putting the correct information according to lsusb:
Code:
SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0fce", ATTRS{idProduct}=="d028", MODE="0660", OWNER="zivs"
and reloading the udev rules, but that didn't help also.
How could I make my Ubuntu mount the /dev/sdb1 (which is my phone's memory card, since manually mounting it, there's all my phone recorded stuff) automatically on Desktop with all read and write permissions when I connect my phone to computer? Phone gets recognized immediately on Win7 OS ... but after the firmware change it's not really recognized by Ubuntu anymore.

This problem of mounting usb-sticks has cropped up after installing debian-5.0.4 anew. Whenever I am attaching the usb the lower panel shows JetFlash TS2GJFV30 (not mounted). When I am clicking on 'Mount device' a red warning sign is appering telling 'Error'. If I run terminal command 'mount /dev/disk' then error message is 'mount: can't find /dev/disk in /etc/ or /etc/mtab'.

I can manually mount /sys on the /chroot/sys but within the chroot it's not showing up. I see from outside the chroot that it's mounted to a directory within the chroot, but within the chroot it's not visible. /tmp /proc and /dev are visible, just not /sys.

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:
[Code]...
Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:
Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.
I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

I have Linux Mint (LMDE) on another partition and I guess I need to do some 'fixing' so I need to mount the partition. I can't, though, not by just clicking the partition (obviously?). I assume this is because I need root access to mount it.
how I can do this?:
1) CLI - mount via CLI by mounting at some point - for e.g., mine is /dev/sda3 so mount as ?
2) Use an 'editor' or file manager - such as Dolphin - how would I do this?
3) Use a Live CD/DVD - I think this way is unnecessary but it's a way, right?
Anything I missed? I guess gparted could mount it?
Which method would you use?
I think one could ssh into it but I'm not able to do that yet.
I need to exit the xorg.conf file which is recently really messed up.

I am trying to install Debian in an old laptop. Of course, in this laptop there is windows installed and I want to respect it. My plan is to install Debian in a spare drive. Before installing Debian, I want to check what is inside each drive. In order to do that, I am trying to use the Debian installer CD. Then start an admin shell, mount the drives in read-only mode, and check their contents.
But when I run the command:
# mount -r -t ntfs /dev/sda3 /mnt/windows
I get the following response:
mount: mounting /dev/sda3 on /mnt/windows/ failed: No such device
