I've downloaded debian lenny 5.0.5, i have downloaded the kde, i have tried to install it but i am having problems.
the system i am trying to put this on is a hp c8000 hppa system.. I did try the sparc software, didn't work.
i have worked out some code, but i'm at my wit's end. I need to learn how to setup/ install/ run debian. i have spent like two days 0ver 24 hours doing research and can't work it out.
Can someone explain what FASTcgi and /cgi-bin are in layman terms? I'm having a hard time understanding reading all the google posts.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to openSUSE and my computer is quite slow although my computer isn't that bad. I opened up ksysguard and it appears that my CPU is the bottleneck. My CPU usage is usually 100%, then after a few seconds, it goes down to 20-60% and then it goes back up to 100% after another few seconds. It says I have 141 processes running (I don't know if that's normal or not).
My Specs are:
CPU: AMD Duron (tm) processor 1.8GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200
Memory: 2GB RAM

i have a question regarding how data is placed on a media, for example the daily used hdd: when we talk about storage we often speak in heads sectors and cylinders. my question is if heads, sectors and cylinder is the true way data exists on a hdd platter?
lets take for example, disk_x
1000.2gb = 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track 121601 cylinders.
fdisk -H 128 -S 32 /dev/disk_x each cylinder will be shrank to 2097152bytes, number of cylinders will grow to 476934. but everything will be much more aligned and readable or there is something i don't know and i will loose almost half of the total sector count on the hdd cause 63-32=31. i asked the partitioner just to use 32 sectors from each track and only 128 tracks of the cylinder.
or another example, if i have a cluster size of 4k. why not making each track use 56 sectors or 7 clusters. theoretically i have all files in my storage and each one of them occupies 14 clusters isn't it wiser to make it as described. what happens when i invoke fdisk -h -s params? what will be changed, the disc physically and the way it is accessed or only the partition table? you probably asking your self what the hell does this dude wants? i want to get maximum i/outputs and the widest bandwidth and the nicest readble partition tables and to understand better fdisk -H -S.
what are the requirement in creating a web server with Ubuntu 10.10 in terms of software? do you have any reference on how to set up?

Using gnome-search-tool, if I search for "word1 word3" I can't find "word1 word2 word3.txt" but I do find it (and too many others) if I just search for "word1"
I would have thought a boolean AND search would just be automatic, but I guess not. I've already come across searchmonkey, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to set it up to do this - i.e. I don't want to have to use regular expressions or be typing "*" all over the place.
P.S. I do use google desktop search, but I hate using it as the results are way too narrow to be of any use and haven't been able to figure out how to widen it.
P.P.S. I also found this: In terminal type gconf-editor and find gnome-search-tool in the Apps. Then look for the field quick_search_second_scan_excluded_paths and change the slash to nothing, i.e. delete the "/".
It worked for my ubuntu 10.04 pc, but not this one (ubuntu 9.1) - so I thought maybe there's another way...
I have Windows 7 working on my laptop. I have 20GB space unpartitioned. I want to install a flavor of Linux like Fedora or Ubuntu in that space, but I have heard that keeping a dual OS configuration sometimes results in losing data stored on the hard disk. I've also heard that it may sometimes cause unrecoverable problem because when Linux is loaded on hard disk it will take over the boot loader from Windows.
Is this correct? Moreover, I have 6 partitions in Windows, but if I use a Live CD for Ubuntu or Fedora to boot, then it is not showing some partitions -- sometimes it shows only 4 or 5 partitions. What might be the problem, and how to resolve it without formatting the whole hard disk and repartitioning it?
Is the term a 'simple SMTP relay' a contradiction in terms?!I have an elderly Dell server on which I have just made a fresh install of 10.04 LTS server. I had 8.04 running on it for a long time, but I haven't tried an SMTP server before. It is a headless server with CLI (no GUI) and the latest version of Webmin installed.I have a basic LAMP server installed for a few websites using PHPbb and Joomla, and also I run a Mediatomb server for our household. When I installed I also chose to install mail services, but these remain masked behind NAT at the moment
I now want to set up an SMTP relay server so when I am working away and using different wifi points or my notoriously unreliable 3G dongle I can always send emails through the home server (from my iPhone and my laptop) rather than having to look up the SMTP server for each ISP of the place where I am working.
What I want is an authenticated server which takes my email and redirects it to my home ISP's SMTP server. I need only 3 authenticated users to have access (myself, my wife and my son). I don't need (or want) any incoming mail services at all.
Useful modules installed are: Dovecot, Postfix, Procmail mail filter, PAM - but how do I set them up?
Is there any simple setup that I could do, preferably through Webmin, but I can handle CLI if necessary?
I have looked at the Ubuntu help pages, but it looks so complicated to set up something that seems like it should be so simple to me.
I'm trying to find out what is the difference between wifi0 and ath0 (atheros wifi card) in terms of packet counters shown in proc/net/dev pseudofile. The fact is that wifi0 and ath0 packet counters are different. I've read that wifi0 refers to the physical device and ath0 refers to virtual device over wifi0, so, as far as I know, packets counters in both devices should be the same, isn't it? Another annoying question for me is that ath0 doesn't show any erroneous packets, while wifi0 does.

I travel (A LOT), in most hotels & airports that offer free WiFi, there is usually a re-direct page on which you must click on the "Accept" button for their (BS) terms of use.
When I boot into Ubuntu, I click on the button & nothing happens. If I boot into windows, it works properly. Tonight after booting into Ubuntu, I opened my VirtualBox running Win 7 & used IE to click the button so I could use the WiFi with Ubuntu in the Seattle (SeaTac) airport.
As long as I don't encounter the Accept terms of use button my Firefox in Ubuntu works perfectly.
I got two harddisks, sda and sdb. Is it possible to install Debian root into software raid partitions sda2 and sdb1 leaving all other partitions 'normal' (not-raid)? do partitions sda2 and sdb1 need to be exact same size and position?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot.After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same.Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot simply because the initrd is created for the root partition location on the virtual machine. The initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application.What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm somewhat familiar with Ubuntu (familiar but not sharp!) but have never tried Debian OS until now. I've installed Debian 5 64bit as a guest on a Mac host. I'm impressed how smooth the install went; even installing VB Guest Additions went smoothly. But, I get a "Your system had a kernel failure" error after booting. I have searched the forum & didn't find this error. Everything seems to work okay but is there an update that isn't showing in the Update Manager? Could this have something to do with VirtualBox 3.1.4?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?

I have a question: I'd like to install Debian next to Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. I've been searching on the web but I can't figure out what to download and what to install. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1355LC that runs on an AMD Athlon XP processor. Also when I install Debian, will it recognise my Linksys WUSB 54 wireless device? (I've read somewhere that it could be that WLAN connections aren't supported with the net instal Cd) I know there's a lot that I'm asking, but I really want to learn more about Debian.
