General :: Cause Any Harm To Use Dual Operating Systems Like Windows In Terms Of Losing Data?
Aug 12, 2011I have Windows 7 working on my laptop. I have 20GB space unpartitioned. I want to install a flavor of Linux like Fedora or Ubuntu in that space, but I have heard that keeping a dual OS configuration sometimes results in losing data stored on the hard disk. I've also heard that it may sometimes cause unrecoverable problem because when Linux is loaded on hard disk it will take over the boot loader from Windows.
Is this correct? Moreover, I have 6 partitions in Windows, but if I use a Live CD for Ubuntu or Fedora to boot, then it is not showing some partitions -- sometimes it shows only 4 or 5 partitions. What might be the problem, and how to resolve it without formatting the whole hard disk and repartitioning it?

I believe I wouldn't have to refer to the lib path, but I added the -L flag to be sure.
The directory /usr/lib includes (among others) these files:

I have tried to follow these instructions. The files in the tar.gz archive provided by FastCGI.com no longer corresponds to the instructions there, but I was still able to run the ./configure and make commands so I believe FastCGI is installed.
But why can not the library be properly linked to? Really hope you can help me out on this one!
Server :: FastCGI And Apache Not Loading Pages
Jul 9, 2011I am trying to set up my Apache server with FastCGI as the CGI engine. It will be mostly running PHP, but I may add Perl or something else later. I started from a completely fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 with every update available. I used the install CD to install a LAMP server as part of the system install.I am using the tutorial at URL...to add the FastCGI functionality. I am having some problems with getting everything to work.The first problem was that apache2-suexec-custom wouldn't accept a different document root. I fixed that by compiling apache2-suexec from source with the document root changed to the correct path.
The next problem is that every php page I load throws a 500 error. Apache's error logs show that FastCGI isn't returning the page data correctly to Apache.

the system i am trying to put this on is a hp c8000 hppa system.. I did try the sparc software, didn't work.
i have worked out some code, but i'm at my wit's end. I need to learn how to setup/ install/ run debian. i have spent like two days 0ver 24 hours doing research and can't work it out.
OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Slow In Terms Of Speed / Performance
Jun 30, 2011I'm new to openSUSE and my computer is quite slow although my computer isn't that bad. I opened up ksysguard and it appears that my CPU is the bottleneck. My CPU usage is usually 100%, then after a few seconds, it goes down to 20-60% and then it goes back up to 100% after another few seconds. It says I have 141 processes running (I don't know if that's normal or not).
My Specs are:
CPU: AMD Duron (tm) processor 1.8GHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200
Memory: 2GB RAM
I'm using KDE.

Jan 18, 2011i have a question regarding how data is placed on a media, for example the daily used hdd: when we talk about storage we often speak in heads sectors and cylinders. my question is if heads, sectors and cylinder is the true way data exists on a hdd platter?
lets take for example, disk_x
1000.2gb = 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track 121601 cylinders.
fdisk -H 128 -S 32 /dev/disk_x each cylinder will be shrank to 2097152bytes, number of cylinders will grow to 476934. but everything will be much more aligned and readable or there is something i don't know and i will loose almost half of the total sector count on the hdd cause 63-32=31. i asked the partitioner just to use 32 sectors from each track and only 128 tracks of the cylinder.
or another example, if i have a cluster size of 4k. why not making each track use 56 sectors or 7 clusters. theoretically i have all files in my storage and each one of them occupies 14 clusters isn't it wiser to make it as described. what happens when i invoke fdisk -h -s params? what will be changed, the disc physically and the way it is accessed or only the partition table? you probably asking your self what the hell does this dude wants? i want to get maximum i/outputs and the widest bandwidth and the nicest readble partition tables and to understand better fdisk -H -S.

Using gnome-search-tool, if I search for "word1 word3" I can't find "word1 word2 word3.txt" but I do find it (and too many others) if I just search for "word1"
I would have thought a boolean AND search would just be automatic, but I guess not. I've already come across searchmonkey, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to set it up to do this - i.e. I don't want to have to use regular expressions or be typing "*" all over the place.
P.S. I do use google desktop search, but I hate using it as the results are way too narrow to be of any use and haven't been able to figure out how to widen it.
P.P.S. I also found this: In terminal type gconf-editor and find gnome-search-tool in the Apps. Then look for the field quick_search_second_scan_excluded_paths and change the slash to nothing, i.e. delete the "/".
It worked for my ubuntu 10.04 pc, but not this one (ubuntu 9.1) - so I thought maybe there's another way...

Jun 7, 2011Is the term a 'simple SMTP relay' a contradiction in terms?!I have an elderly Dell server on which I have just made a fresh install of 10.04 LTS server. I had 8.04 running on it for a long time, but I haven't tried an SMTP server before. It is a headless server with CLI (no GUI) and the latest version of Webmin installed.I have a basic LAMP server installed for a few websites using PHPbb and Joomla, and also I run a Mediatomb server for our household. When I installed I also chose to install mail services, but these remain masked behind NAT at the moment
I now want to set up an SMTP relay server so when I am working away and using different wifi points or my notoriously unreliable 3G dongle I can always send emails through the home server (from my iPhone and my laptop) rather than having to look up the SMTP server for each ISP of the place where I am working.
What I want is an authenticated server which takes my email and redirects it to my home ISP's SMTP server. I need only 3 authenticated users to have access (myself, my wife and my son). I don't need (or want) any incoming mail services at all.
Useful modules installed are: Dovecot, Postfix, Procmail mail filter, PAM - but how do I set them up?
Is there any simple setup that I could do, preferably through Webmin, but I can handle CLI if necessary?
I have looked at the Ubuntu help pages, but it looks so complicated to set up something that seems like it should be so simple to me.

Aug 20, 2010I'm trying to find out what is the difference between wifi0 and ath0 (atheros wifi card) in terms of packet counters shown in proc/net/dev pseudofile. The fact is that wifi0 and ath0 packet counters are different. I've read that wifi0 refers to the physical device and ath0 refers to virtual device over wifi0, so, as far as I know, packets counters in both devices should be the same, isn't it? Another annoying question for me is that ath0 doesn't show any erroneous packets, while wifi0 does.

I travel (A LOT), in most hotels & airports that offer free WiFi, there is usually a re-direct page on which you must click on the "Accept" button for their (BS) terms of use.
When I boot into Ubuntu, I click on the button & nothing happens. If I boot into windows, it works properly. Tonight after booting into Ubuntu, I opened my VirtualBox running Win 7 & used IE to click the button so I could use the WiFi with Ubuntu in the Seattle (SeaTac) airport.
As long as I don't encounter the Accept terms of use button my Firefox in Ubuntu works perfectly.

Oct 12, 2010My Ubuntu system is occasionally becoming very sluggish. I'm running many things simultaneously and it's very difficult to tell which program is the culprit.
I suspect that the sluggishness is due to disk activity since the CPU usage is consistently under 50% on each of the 4 cores of the CPU, and over 30% of the 6GB of RAM are free.
Is there a tool that can show me in real time the number of disk IO operations per second and the amount of data read/written per second? Can all this info be broken down and displayed per process?

Nov 4, 2009I'm using my Linux (SLES 10) server as a File Server at this point. I need to set File Permissions to nested folders differently to different groups. For example:
homesharedengineering* should be read only for groupA

I've been using Webmin and Putty to set permissions but Putty only allows me the Default Group, it won't allow me to set several groups on the same directory. Webmin seems to allow me to add multiple groups (Webmin --> Others --> File Manager --> Info & ACL tab will provide extended abilities) but when I add multiple groups, they don't seem to take effect? I'm wondering if my setup at the 'Share' level or at the hierarchy of my folder structure (unix based) needs to be set specifically?

This made me wonder how people actually can charge for software derived from Linux, for instance, Red Hat. Well, my impression is that they really make profit only out of services. Somebody probably bought the program from RHE and can make it available at no cost.

Mainly asking what kind of user you consider the distro to be for (beginners, advanced, total newb, whatever), and whether you think they offer as much to an extremely experienced user as they would to a newb.Those are my two favorite distros, and I really like Mandriva a lot. I'm trying to pick one to stick with throughout, but I'm not really sure if Mandriva is too automated and Windows-user oriented like Ubuntu (I haven't really delved into the deeper aspects of Linux so I have zero experience in this area now). This might sound a little elitist but I don't want to be using Mandriva and just be automatically dismissed as a newb on first impression just because I'm using Mandriva (although admittedly I am a bit of a newb at the moment, I don't plan on staying one).
