Apr 6, 2010I would like to change my username (or login name) and am wondering what the safest route to do so is. The install is on a headless server, which I just use ssh.There's a) using usermod -l newname oldname. The line in the usermod man that says that changing the login name doesn't change anything else, which makes me think that something else is bound to break. I've also considered b) creating a new user, moving the contents of my home directory to the new user, and deleting the old user. This is kind of cumbersome, but would this be the recommended way to ensure everything goes well (considering I still have to redo some config files).

Jul 17, 2011I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

Nov 18, 2010During installation of debian-lenny on my new laptop with pre-installed windows-7 I forgot to mount my windows-7 (/sda2 for c: and /sda3 for d:). I decided not to worry and mount them later when squeeze becomes stable and I install squeeze. Recentle I came across an opensuse forum thread where a person got the same problem and got the advice of adding in the /etc/fstab the lines:
/dev/sda2 /path_to/mount_point ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 /path_to/mount_point ntfs-3g defaults 0 0
Is it safe to do it on debian also? I don't want to mess up my Windows.

Feb 15, 2010My computer was working this morning and both hard drives were working fine, then all of a sudden for about two hours I was stuck with this "problem", then after fumbling and moving and stablizing things, then Windows works? See below for details. I've finally reinstalled both hard drives, but the one with the Linux partition doesn't work: it says nothing is discovered on the disk. I can't login at the LUKS login after grub starts, therefore I can't get into Linux, but Windows works?! I used to be able to go directly into Grub when the computer starts, I forgot how to do that but it doesn't matter. If you need details I'd be glad to provide them. I just wondered why Linux doesn't work, but Windows does. I have Linux & Windows on two different separate hard drives

I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

When I start the server up, it loads fine and loggin prompt. I can enter the username "root" without any issues but as soon as I press enter, I am not able to enter password. The cursor just blinks and i press enter, the server responds by saying invalid password.
I was connecting a USB keyboard and changed to Ps/2 but this didn't make any difference.

Though I took careful notes during the install re the "user account" (did not use my name as my purpose is to get the pc running and give it away) and "user password," it will not accept them. I would like to change or edit both (debian isn't telling me which is incorrect). How can this be done?
Also, this is looking for the "user account" - not the root info, right?
If I am forced to reinstall the OS, will I have to go through the entire process (partitions and all)?

I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?

Debian Hardware :: Unable To Login To IMac G4 - Graphical Login?
Sep 30, 2015I have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.

Apr 25, 2010Been using 11.2 for a couple of months now, mostly I've solved my own problems or read from some preexisting already solved problems on threads like these. But, I'm not even sure where to start with this one. I cannot login under my main username, the account is set to autologin, and I get the login screen instead. When I attempt to login I get a black screen for about a second then it bumps me back to the login screen, no error messages. I'm able to login under runlevel 3, but as soon as I try to "init 5" it bumps me out and back to the login screen.
Root account works fine, and I used it to create a secondary account from which I am posting from right now. The behavior started after the system put the display to sleep while I was watching a movie in VLC, I woke it up just as it turned completely black, it hung there and I was forced to hard reboot. Had the problem ever since (for several hours now, lol).
I use Gnome but I installed KDE to see if it would resolve my problem, but no dice.
