Since that time I forgot my username and password (including root).My question is, is there a way to get around it without starting from scratch? I went through some of the existing threads regarding this issue but in no avail.I dono wat boot-loader I'm using there is no sign of any boot-loader (either grub nor llo).I tried ma hand in fail-safe mode also, it is also asking for login id. Is there any way to reset the same. As I have some imp file inside.

Jul 8, 2010I have setup a debian server and it has been working fine but I moved it to a different location and not I am getting a problem. When I start the server up, it loads fine and loggin prompt. I can enter the username "root" without any issues but as soon as I press enter, I am not able to enter password. The cursor just blinks and i press enter, the server responds by saying invalid password.
I was connecting a USB keyboard and changed to Ps/2 but this didn't make any difference.
Debian :: New Install Won't Accept Username & Password?
Jun 20, 2010I have just completed a debian netinstall, but am stuck at the "Welcome" screen. Though I took careful notes during the install re the "user account" (did not use my name as my purpose is to get the pc running and give it away) and "user password," it will not accept them. I would like to change or edit both (debian isn't telling me which is incorrect). How can this be done?
Also, this is looking for the "user account" - not the root info, right?
If I am forced to reinstall the OS, will I have to go through the entire process (partitions and all)?

Sep 1, 2009I am using Debian Linux. I completely forgot the username and password to log on. I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?

Jul 17, 2011I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

They seem to describe older versions of Ubuntu and as i haven't done this before i have no idea where to go with it. One site suggested i add a line into an edit page after getting into the recovery mode but i can't see how. I am using a livecd to post right now. I forgot the password because it took forever for me to get my replacement motherboard after frying the previous one.

If I could get the GRUB prompt, I could use a method I picked up somewhere, but where is the GRUB prompt, which I understand is a bootloader? I press ESC before the Splash Screen, but just get a square bracket and pressing ESC makes no difference, to the continued boot process, except perhaps make it a little slower. This is a system I set up, literally, years ago, with no need to touch it. It was originally set up as a file server, running SAMBA. I am wanting to add CUPS to it, and possibly a web server if it will handle the load. Currently, it is running Debian 4.0 without a GUI.
My next step, if I can't get into the root account, is to install a new OS (and try to salvage the file shares that exist). I just would rather keep the install that I have, but I need to hack/crack or change my root password.

Aug 9, 2010I can't believe that I did not write down the password to my encrypted volume. Had not rebooted in a long time so I had not typed it and now that I rebooted I don't remember what is was.
Is there any way to automate the trial of different passwords? I remember the basic structure of what the password was so if somehow I could automate trying passwords from a list I may have a good change to recover my volume.
If/when I do remember the password. Is there a way to change the password on an encrypted volume? I need to make it something I will remember for sure... or write it down somewhere safe..
