View 6 RepliesI'm running Wheezy and just did an apt-get upgrade which installed linux-3.2.0-4-amd64, a bunch of php5 stuff and some qemu stuff. Now when I log into the desktop it starts loading and before it finishes I wind up with a screen full of text. The first line is usually "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at <some address that varies>" but sometimes the first line is off the screen. None of KDE, Gnome or xfce work. Recovery mode to a shell prompt works fine. I did a net install of Wheezy on another disk and that runs just fine. I'd like to get my original disk working.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to 11.04 and I'm having problem with Totem.
When I load a movie it crashes, and prints this message to the terminal code...
I tried to remove and install it again but it wasn't fixed.
This problem did not occur in 10.10.
What can I do?
I've got a clean Fedora 14 x86 install and whenever I attempt to play a video file, .avi .mkv .mpg doesn't matter, Totem crashes with the following four pop-ups:

Yesterday Totem started crashing - the window shows for a second and then dissapears. I've just recently upgraded to lenny using aptitude (following the instructions on debian.org. All went smoothly, and almost everything is working fine.I have had my X server crash twice since then, both times when I simply doubleclicked a running application. There is some indication of problems in the Xorg.log file, but it's not helpful to me -- can you help me understand?
View 2 Replies View RelatedUsing x11vnc server on Debian host, and TightVNC viewer client on Windows 7. All was working fine until a server host upgrade, from Wheezy to Jessie. Now, when I try to connect, TightVNC retrieves the certificate as normal, compares and accepts it, and starts stunnel. The next step would normally be to prompt for the VNC password.
Instead it gives an error:
ReadExact: Socket error while reading.
I'm guessing that some thing is missing or misconfigured after the Jessie upgrade, which broke many other things too, as Debian upgrades always seem to do. I have removed and reinstalled the x11vnc package, no effect.
The errors in the log file don't mean a lot to me.
The server is started with this command:
Code: Select allx11vnc -ssl -display :0 -usepw >>vnc-log 2>&1 &
If I start it up without the -ssl flag, and connect from the Windows system with a different client (Mobaxterm) it all goes well.

details:
I'm upgrading a 7-year-old 64-bit Clevo/System76 laptop to jessie. My first run of `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` ended after fetching packages, with the following lines ending the console spew:
Code: Select allGet: 2051 http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie/main user-setup all 1.61 [196 kB]
Fetched 1,816 MB in 17min 38s (1,715 kB/s)
E: This installation run will require temporarily removing the essential package python:amd64 due to a Conflicts/Pre-Depends loop. This is often bad, but if you really want to do it, activate the APT::Force-LoopBreak option.
E: Internal Error, Could not early remove python:amd64 (2)
So I started a second run with `sudo aptitude -o APT::Force-LoopBreak=true full-upgrade`. I left it running overnight, checking back periodically to OK overwriting `/etc/*` files with package-maintainer's versions. Friday I checked the box ~0900 and found
Only GUI application running was `gnome-terminal`, with the upgrade running in a single tab. This was working as intended, since I closed all other apps, and all but one `gnome-terminal` tab, before starting the upgrade. desktop environment (DE)=Cinnamon (also as intended) mouse was non-responsive: swiping the touchpad produced no movement keyboard appeared non-responsive (but more on that below) internal fan was running apparently full-speed (certainly as loud as I've ever heard it) console spew ended with the following 3 lines:
Code: Select allSetting up fancontrol (1:3.3.5-2) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/init.d/fancontrol ...
[ ok ] Stopping fan speed regulator: fancontrol.
I left it running in hope the upgrade would recover, but after 7 hours nothing had changed, so I attempted to kill the job. The following all failed:
invoking shutdown via desktop menu (neither mouse movement nor pressing Super key produced any change) C-c/Ctrl-c in the terminal tab (nothing changed in the GUI) A-F2/Alt-F2 (trying to run another `gnome-terminal` to run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but no dialog appeared) C-A-F1 (to goto tty1 and run `sudo shutdown -Ph now`, but again no change in GUI/X)
The good news is, the box did reboot after `A-SysRq-[REISUB]`, though only to tty1. From there, `sudo dpkg --audit` produces these results.
So obviously the upgrade is incomplete; how best to resume it, or to debug the current situation before resuming? I'd prefer to fix the problem with `fancontrol` before proceeding, since the previous `full-upgrade` was quite long-running.
FWIW I also recorded the packages that the previous/broken `aptitude full-upgrade` wanted to {add, remove, upgrade}, and note that package=`fancontrol` is one that `aptitude` wanted to upgrade. So I'd like to know if I should just
Configure unpacked-but-not-yet-configured packages as directed by `dpkg --audit` reconfigure only-half-configured packages as directed by `dpkg --audit` process triggers for packages awaiting processing of triggers as directed by `dpkg --audit` reinstall packages missing md5sums as directed by `dpkg --audit` create a list of packages to remove (from those listed in the previous upgrade) add `fancontrol` to that list run `sudo aptitude remove [list of packages]` from tty1 create a list of packages to add and upgrade (from those listed in the previous upgrade) delete `fancontrol` from that list run `sudo aptitude install [list of packages]` from tty1 rerun `sudo aptitude full-upgrade` from tty1 (hoping that cleans up any remaining upgrade work, and does not try to reinstall package=`fancontrol`)
I did a distribution upgrade using "apt-get dist-upgrade". After rebooting, I receive a message saying "Failed to start the X Server". When I okay the prompt for more info, I see the following: GDM: Xserer not found: /usr/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 Error: Command could not be executed! install the X server or correct GDM configuration and restart GDM.gdm[4678]: WARNING: gdm_server_spawn: Xserver not found: /usr/binX :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7

I find the next one. When I boot into jessie my RAID device (just a data partition not /) is not found causing the boot to fail as per problems reported here

After booting I can mount my RAID device but if it's in the fstab when booting it fails. Also, I notice that some of my lvm device names have changed. After a bit of hunting around I found a couple of solutions pointing to running dmraid as a service during boot and changing the entry for the RAID device in fstab to use the UUID.

This seems to work. However this seems to be a workaround and as the lvm device paths for my / and /usr partitions have also changed, I'm wondering if there is a bug here as mentioned in the second link?
The / and /usr paths changed to /dev/dm-2 and /dev/dm-3 from the /dev/mapper/ form.

I have just upgraded my Debian 4.0 box to Debian 5.0. The upgrade is ok and the version of debian is 5.0.6.
Webmin, despite all my efforts, is still displaying 4.0 and when I force it to 5.0 manually, it states: "Warning - Your system is actually running Debian Linux version 4.0."
I started #aptitude safe-upgrade and switched to another user. Gdm showed the error and hung down the system. So I did reboot. After reboot if I start totem I see such a result:

I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.
I've just upgraded to Squeeze from Lenny using the instructions found here URL... After completing the upgrade and re-booting the system informed me that "gnome.desktop is not installed" and throws me into XFCE. I have a desktop hooked up to a router and plugged into my TV. I like to run Totem and have videos running full screen on my TV. I would like to control that Totem using my laptop (connected to the same router over wifi). How would I go about doing that? I connected to my desktop using SSH and tried to send signals to Totem, but nothing worked. I tried using VNC, and that was ineffective as well.

I recently switched over to Debian Squeeze and now that I'm over the transition shock I'm starting to enjoy it a lot more than I thought I would. One little thing that is very irritating, though not show-stopping, is the fact that I cannot change the default media player in GNOME.Totem I just can't stand it for some reason and I would like to just remove it. So I whip out my'apt-get remove totem' only to see that Totem is tied to a number of GNOME components that I want to keep. Now why a media player is so intertwined with GNOME I have no idea, at least that would be appropriate to express here.Normally to change my default media player I right click on a media file, open with, remember this app for this type of file, and then I'm done. I also tried using the 'Preferred Applications' option under the 'System --> Preferences' menu with no success.
As I said this problem isn't a show-stopper but it is blankety-blankin' annoying. Any thoughts on how to resolve this would be appreciated. I have spent some time searching online but to no avail. Although I no absolutely nothing about software development I can only hope that this is a bug and that the GNOME developers didn't actually intend this. If it were intentional it would seem analogous to Windows 7 in that there is no way to remove IE from the system. Oh but you can disable it and hide it from the menu. . .
I tried to remove the totem-mozilla package in Lenny, because I know totem dosn't work regarding online video... It will remove gnome as well?!
I have installed VLC and the package mozilla-plugin-vlc.
Now my question is: How to make VLC the default player in Iceweasel instead of Totem? So the likes of ..... etc. will work?
I've just upgraded to 10.10 and X crashes after every login to KDE. I am able to use the gnome desktop with no problems.Tried removing the .kde and .kderc directories, and it still crashes.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to backup some commercial DVD movies which I own. I just want to take them with me abroad without filling up my luggage with DVD cases. So there are no copyright issues here and I will do it anyway, the only point is that if I can convert them to .avi I can save 4 or 5 movies on a blank DVD whereas if I have to copy the .iso images I can only save one DVD per blank DVD. So it's a bit of a waste.
dvdrip doesn't work on this one, so I tried via vlc. It was still running when I went to bed and this morning I had to reboot, I didn't think about it so I didn't check to see whether it had finished or not before rebooting. I decided to check the output file before writing it to a DVD and clicked on it. Totem told me it didn't have the required plugin and asked me whether I wanted to install it. I said yes and was asked for root password. It offered one choice:
GStreamer fluendo MPEG2 demuxing plugin Fluendo codecs to decode mpeg streams I clicked on "install". It started to do something - the mouse cursor turns into a little spinning wheel when I hover over it - and it stayed like that. It's been like that for the last 3 quarters of an hour.
when i try to play a flash video the visual works but not the audio and totem tells me i need the suitable codec which it says is gstreamer-bad and when i attempt to install it, it says that it conflicts with gstreamer-really-bad but if i remove gstreamer-really-bad and install gstreamer-bad totem gives me an internal data stream error instead and even visual won't work. so i ran totem--debug and this is the terminal output with gstreamer-bad when trying to play flash video.
** message: error: internal data stream error. gstflvdemux.c(52: gst_flv_demux_loop (): /play/decodebin0/flvdemux0: stream stopped, reason error
i also ran totem --debug with gstreamer-really-bad installed and this is the output then.
totem --debug
** (totem:7979): debug: init of python module
** (totem:7979): debug: registering python plugin instance: videos+totempythonplugin
** (totem:7979): debug: creating object of type videos+totempythonplugin
[code]....
Totem will start to play them but claim i need gstreamer bad plugins... it will offer to install them and afterward will say "data stream error" when i try to play any. Is there a codec package that would allow me to play flash... i already tried the w64codecs package the gstreamer good bad and ugly from synaptic, and installed totem-xine to no avail.
