Debian :: How To Make Windows-loader Default And Hide Grub If Possible

Background: I am dual booting Debian and Window 7. Wanted to make windows-loader default and hide grub if possible. Google search took me here: [URL].... (third answer, about editing grub)
Make Windows (ANY variant) the default Grub2 menu option.
Description: This sets Windows as the default boot option, and (with NO user action) the PC will auto-launch Windows on startup.
STEPS:
A. sudo update-grub #List your current menu items
B. Edit setup file
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=”Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1″ #Set the boot default to your Windows boot partition
[WARNING: Just setting 'GRUB_DEFAULT=n', will NOT work after kernel updates, etc.
Save the file and close.]
sudo update-grub
Question: I must have done something wrong, for update-grub (as root) now gives this: "/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 6: /etc/default/grub: 2: not found"
What should I do now to make grub as it was in the beginning?
[By the way, it's been very difficult to get Debian related pages...]
I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 dual-booted on my machine. grub was aautomaticlu installed as the primary loader. Soon i want to nuke my ubuntu partition but i know that will delete grub. Can i remove grub or at least make Windows boot loader default.
I am a new Ubuntu user, and I am attempting to set Windows 7 64 bit as my default OS in the boot loader instead of Ubuntu 10.10. I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. However, this file appears to be completely blank, which does not seem to make sense and is preventing me from changing the boot order.
I was wondering how I can make Windows XP the first and default option on my Grub 2. I use Ubuntu 9.10 through a semi-dedicated partition on my second hard drive, if that helps. I use Grub 2 just cause I have a grub.cfg file, and here it is.

I am dual booting Windows and Ubuntu 10.10. I installed StartUp-Manager so that I could easily make Windows my default OS upon Startup.I did a sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get upgrade and now I have a new kernel. This moved Windows down in the list, so now MemTest86 is the default OS upon Startup.I want to make Windows the default always, not just until the next Kernel upgrade comes through.
I have been trying to edit grub to make windows vista the default but whne i got to the menu.lst it is blank. I use this from the official guide gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst and it still comes up blank as well as sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
I installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.
I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed.It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR? Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
I was installing sqeeze i386 on my laptop VOSTRO 1400 and got this the 'grub-pc' package failed to install into /target/. without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot.
I tried to install Open Office following a guide in OpenOffice.org but after several attempts debian refused to boot properly. I decided to re-install Debian 5.0. When we came to the installation of the boot loader GRUB refused to be installed. I stopped the installation expecting to go back to the beginning. But now it tries to boot saying:Grub loading stage 1.5.

This is an old Toshiba 3110 with Windows 98SE installed which I have successfully customized and do not want to loose. What can I do to get back into W98SE and then re-install Debian properly?
i've a little problem with the grub loader. I've two OS in my laptot: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 64bit and Windows 7 64bit. But i can't boot Windows 7 from the grub loader. The grub still load the /dev/sda1 partition that is the recovery partition of the laptot, while windows 7 is in the partition /dev/sda6. I tried to modify the path in the grub.cfg, but still load the wrong partition, how i can do?
It's in the title - I just want to change from the GRUB loader back to the Windows MBR loader. It's probably something simple, I guess. It's just I don't want to see the GRUB loader (first) when I turn on my computer I want to see the normal Windows MBR.
If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.
Basically the issue is that after I installed ubuntu 10.04 (on the same drive as Windows 7) I can no longer boot windows 7 from grub. When I select windows 7 in the grub boot menu it returns me to the boot menu.I looked through other posts who had similar problems, however, I wanted to post my own thread as I was unsure how to fix the problem based on information from other threads.
I installed Debian on a old hard drive (quantum 5gb) and ran with it for a couple of days.. BUT all my data (including windows) is on my other hard drive.. so my question is What do I have to do to make grub detect windows and linux when I attach the 2-nd hard drive?
I just installed Fedora 11 (I installed over the Fedora 10 installation I had already installed)..
-Before I would have Grub give the choice of Fedora 10 or Windows (Where Windows would load the Win Boot loader for my options of Windows 7 and Windows Vista)
-NOW: I have the same options.. But when i select Windows (It loads the Recovery partition) instead of the Windows Boot Loader...

I installed Fedora 14 alongside windows, overwriting my old Ubuntu 10 partition. Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 64-Bit via Wubi but it seems that when I turn on my machine I first get the Windows Boot Loader, when I select Ubuntu from the list it then goes into GRUB with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. Is there any way to change this so only GRUB is used?
I have triple booted Windows XP (195 GB)partition 0? the second partition is Windows 7 (195 GB)And the rest of a 1TB hard drive went to Open Suse 11.3. if it makes any difference I used g parted to create the three partitions and made them all primary. My problem is I want to change the way they all get along. When I boot up, I get the options;
Desktop -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12 Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12 windows 1 windows 2
which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.
my issue is that i want to boot from windows boot loader neither than booting form grub loader...
I have installated windows and then installated red hat...I am able to login to windows and red hat without any issue but my prob is to load red hat and windows from windows boot loader...
Can u guys tell me where to edit and configure the files.
This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.
A few days ago my Laptop wouldn't hibernate in Windows 7, I managed to fix this problem by going into Windows' Disk Management tool and setting the C:/ Partition as the active partition, this fixed my hibernation issue, however I have just noticed that now when I boot my laptop my GRUB menu no longer appears, instead it just loads Windows straight away as if it was the only OS on my laptop.
I've confirmed it's something to do with my recent Disk Management change as I booted up GParted, removed the boot flag from Windows and when a rebooted my GRUB menu reappeared.
Not sure on how I can both have Windows as the active partition while being able to keep GRUB working also.

I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 32 bit using live cd onto a recently new Dell machine with windows7.
Everything was fine for a couple of weeks, but last night I got the error code...
Looking into the forums, I see that maybe I need to re-install grub 2. When I started probing using fdisk, I saw that the boot partition was my windows partition. So, I thought I would ask to find out if this looks right before I start making things worse code...
I am running Ubuntu 10.10. Normally when I boot, I get the choice to run Ubuntu or the Windows loader, where I choose between 7 or XP. I have just noticed that when I boot now, I do not have the choice of going into windows. This has happened on two of my PC's just in the last few days. I assume one of the updates has overwritten the grub configuration file as I still get the grub menu but not the windows option. I have tried sudo update-grub but this did not solve the problem.
I tried to install linux on hard disk and it installed without any problem. However, when i boot i directly get the windows boot loader screen and no grub screen. I reinstalled linux. I tried to fix grub, but still no grub screen.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a separate partition, with Grub being in it own partition. When I start the PC only windows Xp is available. So how do I get grub or Ubuntu load with windows xp boot loader? I tried with Live cd, the sudo grub but then it says command not found. I think its because Ubuntu 11.04 uses grub 2.
I just made my system unbootable... Here is what i did.. I have two sata HDDs
160 GB (Contained Windows 7) 500 GB
I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..
