Debian :: Wanted Packages Marked Auto Removable After Updates
May 28, 2011
I'm using an old computer with Lenny for a few weeks. After updating OpenOffice last night from backports to 3.2 and doing an update this morning, there is a long list of packages and libraries in the auto removable section of Synaptic that I suspect or am absolutelt certain that I don't want to remove (Rhytmbox, for example).

I've been attempting to, over the past few days, go through the LAMP setup. I already have Apache installed, as well as PHP. However, whenever I attempt to upgrade from PHP from version 5.1.6 to 5.3.6 using "yum upgrade php" I get the message "No Packages marked for updates"..Now I know you're going to want my system info, so based upon my getinfo.sh:Information for general problems.

Currently when I insert a removable device, it is auto-mounted as readonly. To use it I have to do this every time.
Code:
sudo umount /dev/xxx
pmount xxx
This applys to every removable device I have, and did not exist on my previous distro. Debian amd 64 Squeeze [URL]

I am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.

Due to this thread -> [URL] we discovered that my Fedora runs rc kernel. After several tries to update to stable one, no result came. I need your guidance to update my system.
What I tried:
yum update
yum update kernel
yum clean all
The result is the message:
[root@dimitris ~]# yum update kernel
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

I did a clean install of 11.04 this morning. Upon logging in, Update Manager appeared, telling me there were 67 packages to upgrade. I obliged, and the update progress window appeared, as usual. At this point I realized it was not a convenient time to install the updates. No progress had yet been made; Update Manager had not downloaded anything, the progress bar had not moved, and the status was "waiting". I canceled the update and closed Update manager. However, upon running it again, it thinks that it successfully installed all the packages. In the "Ubuntu Software Center" Update history, it shows all those packages as having been updated with a timestamp of when I canceled the update. Apt-get and aptitude will not update the packages either. It seems like the packages have been marked as updated even though no update was installed. How can I rectify this problem and get the package managers to actually install the updates?

On one PC i get automatic updates allmost every day and on the other PC i haven't gotten an auto-update since the install. apt-get update runs ok. I have seen from other posts here, that stable distros are supposed to get only security updates. Why, tho, does one PC get auto-updates, the other not? Is there some switch to enable auto-updates?

I'm currently administering an Ubuntu box remotely. It's set to install security updates automatically, and it notifies me when I log in via ssh whether it has installed an update which requires a reboot. For example, if it installed a kernel update a few days ago, the update manager will touch a "reboot_required" file in /var/run, and when I ssh into the machine today I'll be greeted with a "System restart required" message. Is there a similar functionality for yum or Packagekit?

I'm remote from my system and so have to wait 2-3 days before I can get access directly, but I've noticed that when the kernel updates automatically (or forced by me), the next reboot stops at the grub page awaiting confirmation of the kernel I want to boot. grub.conf doesnt seem significantly different from that of fedora (my previos distro for this machine) and even has the default lines and times spec'd, so I can't see what's holding it up. Any ideas how I can prevent this so I can have my system auto-updating the kernel AND safe to reboot remotely?

Nearly every time that automatic updates finishes installing the software and requires a restart of the OS, the PC locks up at the 'Ubuntu' screen with some dots beneath it.
I have been just been forcing it down by powering off/on the PC - which I figure is probably not a safe thing to do but don't know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this problem.
I've looked at some of the log files but can't make any sense of most of them nor do I know which log file might show the problem.

I am using samba4 and bind9 (9.7.2rc1) on an ubuntu server 10.04.
Everything works fine, but bind9 ist unable to update DNS entries sent by clients.
I followed the tutorial [URL] but it doesn't work for me.
It doesn't look like a file permission problem:
Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/dns.keytab
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/dns_update_list
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/named.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root /usr/local/samba/private/named.conf.update

I press On-button, Debian boots, logs in and automatically connects to the Wireless network AND! to my local pc via LAN. It runs an ssh server, so I can ssh into debian over internet and communicate with the local pc (send a magic packet). Here are my problems:
1) I don't how to log in automatically. This and this doesn't work.
2) I need a network tool that can manage multiple connections and has a reconnect feature. With the default network manager I cannot even connect to more than one network simultaneously although I have two network devices of course.
And I guess I can run all that in console mode, right?

I use Debian 8.2 without DE. I can mount removable devices (USB sticks, external HDDs) manually using mount/umount to specific folders under /mnt or /media. But I want them mount automatically when plugged-in as /media/disk-label. Also I want to be able safely remove already mounted devices without data loss.As I understand, I need to create custom UDEV rule and associate it with mount/umount scripts. E.g. mount script
Code: Select all#!/bin/sh
mount_point=$ID_FS_LABEL
if [ -z $mount_point ]; then
mount_point=${DEVNAME##*/}
fi
# retrieve gid of the plugdev group and set it as owner of mountpoint
plugdev_gid="$(grep plugdev /etc/group|cut -f3 -d:)"
if [ -z $plugdev_gid ]; then
[code]....
Is this safe and correct approach or it is better to use something else?

I'm a bit confused with this: When I log on a server it says 6 packages can be upgraded. When I run apt-get upgrade though it says that 0 upgraded, 0 new installed, 0 uninstalled and 3 cannot be upgraded. Occasionally, when there are indeed more updates available than those 6 packages, upgrade works fine. I believe the server is up-to-date. Why is that?

I'm going traveling and I had the bright idea of putting my sensitive and irreplaceable files on an sd card. Then if I leave my stuff in a sketchy hostel for the day, I can easily take the card and might lose only a replaceable netbook. The problem is that I want some files to have 600 permissions (rw-------), readable and writable only by owner.
But no power on earth seems to be able to force a fuse-ified filesystem to pay attention. Whether I try "chmod 600 filename.txt" as the owner/user or as sudo makes no difference. Nothing works. The sd card is mounted with a line in /etc/fstab:
Code: Select allUUID=0000-0000 /mnt/64_GB_sdxc exfat auto,rw,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0022,flush,fmask=133 0 0
So the user owns the files and they have typical permissions instead of the automounted default of 700. That's all very nice, but I'd like to be able to change permissions on just a few files!

I recently had my AE 1000 linksys wireless adapter driver installed, the info for which can be found here:
[URL]
But today I was presented with 142 automatic updates already downloaded waiting to be installed on my computer. I installed the updates and restarted my computer for the updates to take effect. Well, since then my wireless adapter no longer registers at all, it doesn't even recognize my router let alone connect to it. It is as inoperable as the day I got it.
I am currently using a different computer in the house to get internet. Should I go about following the same directions I did before and reinstall the driver, or is there a more simple way?

I have the following hardware setup:
a NAS running Debian that frequently (but not always) has two removable media attached,a Debian desktop that mounts the above NAS via sshfs, the aforementioned removable media are symlinked to the directory on tha NAS that is then mounted by the desktop.
What I'd like this setup to do is to immediately time out if mounts as unavailable. Instead, I only get the expected behaviour if the NAS is down (the ssh client takes about 3 seconds to do that); if it's up, the removable media automounts (they are symlinked to the directory shared with the desktop) seem to never time out, ever. This happens locally on the NAS as well, when ssh'ing to the NAS and trying to run `ls /media/Storage` or `ls /media/Backup`, these commands never return. It's as if systemd was ignoring the x-systemd.device-timeout setting on the NAS.
The relevant part of the NAS's fstab:
Code: Select all/dev/sdb1 /media/Backup ext4 defaults,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=1s,rw,user,nofail,x-systemd.idle-timeout=30s 0 1
/dev/sdc1 /media/Storage ext4 defaults,noauto,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.device-timeout=1s,rw,exec,nofail,x-systemd.idle-timeout=5min 0 1
[Code] ....
I find it highly interesting that despite both removable media being detached, only one is flagged as having a dependency failed. Both paths exhibit the hang behaviour, though.
What can I do to actually time out when the media are not there?
