I start my box from startx but after getting these updates, x tries to start, I see a mouse and a screen for a second and then it drops out again. I'm running the latest nvidia drivers from nvidia and have tried reinstalling them and they install fine, but no go.

My xorg.conf file is void of anything related to input devices and has been working a treat. So it would seem one of these updates has screwed evdev. I've tried reverting back to earlier versions, but I get the same issues. I was running squeeze with kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 when all this happened. It was running like a trooper. I've now tried 2.6.32-5-amd64 but still no go.
Debian Configuration :: Squeeze D-u - Kernel Configuration Skipped
Jul 6, 2010I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I found a thread that indicated that this bug was fixed in the next kernel version: 2.6.32-6. I am willing to upgrade the kernel to get rid of my problems. Is a squeeze kernel at 2.6.32-6 or higher available? If so, where? I have not compiled my own kernel, and am not very interested in getting into that.

- what is the proper way to downgrade to that version of the kernel (I got my current kernel version when I installed squeeze few days ago and the official repo does not seem to have the -29 version anymore)?
- how to prevent that future automatic updates "upgrade" me again to the non-working version?
Debian Configuration :: Kernel Version In Squeeze ?
Mar 15, 2011Laptop Amilo L1300, installed Debian Squeeze from netinstall from scratch a month ago. Installed Xfce as a DE afterwards.
This laptop usually has problem with: ACPI, Wifi and tons of other stuff usually Kernel related and is really picky about kernel version!
Now - with Lenny it worked without problems, but it had gnome and ext3 so I took a gamble and did a fresh install of Squeeze with Xfce with Ext4 filesystem and overall performance of the computer was faster and more responsive.

It all worked 100% until a week ago (roughly).
I do not use synaptic nor update manager, so I updated the system via terminal (as root of course) "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade". And I noticed it will upgrade kernel. I went through the upgrade process, as I thought it's all a 2.6.32-5-686 kernel version and it will not brake anything since it IS a stable branch of Debian and it will not install new kernel. Of course it did not install 2.6.34 or anything like that...
After the update I began experiencing problems, first with mouse pointer, it became invisible and goes back visible and resume from suspend, also wireless randomly disconnects and sometimes won't reconnect to wifi network, as I found out it's all kernel related problems (googled it up). I do not know how to go back to previous kernel version, since in Grub2 menu it only points to one and only kernel version, as I reckon it's the same version but with bugfixes? Or should I say buy UNfixes. I tried using a liquorix kernel 2.6.32 but as he works, has problem with ACPI as I presume since it freezes the system on random occasions.
Please, what EXACT version of kernel was in Squeeze like 3 weeks ago? And how can install that particular version of kernel, since it was the only one that worked besides the one from Lenny.

Is it possible I had, dunno 2.6.32.28 and it was updated to, dunno, 2.6.32.29 or some later one?

The problem is, 2.6.32-5-686 seems to be at the moment last kernel for squeeze.Is it any way to update just a kernel and stay with squeeze or I must upgrade squeeze to the testing (wheezy)?

Aug 10, 2010I've got a fresh install of Squeeze on a 32bit host and I have been unable to boot into XEN/dom0.The Xen Kernel is "linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-686" (pvops) and Hypervisor is xen-hypervisor-4.0-i386.The system default installed with grub2.It boots quite happily in normal mode, using the above Kernel, but just reboots itself if I try run it as Xen/dom0. (reboots within a second of pressing <enter> ... there is no messages displayed on the screen that I have noticed)The relevant menu (generated by /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen) entry for running Xen is as below;

I assumed (perhaps optimistically?) that newer kernels would be backward-compatible, and that any dependencies on other software would be enforced by the package mechanisms. Debian :: Can't Remove Wine - Apt-get Bricked - Could Not Perform Immediate Configuration On 'wine-unstable'
Feb 16, 2011while trying to get a game to work on wine I was surprised to find out that the wine version that ships with sid is 1.0.1 released in October 2005. So I installed the latest release I found at [URL] like this :
dpkg -i wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
The install failed, I think because I hadn't remove the old wine version, and that's when the joy-ride started. Impossible to remove wine to restart properly. (apt-get remove libwine wine and apt-get -f install didn't) After some googling I tried this :
dpkg -i --force-depends wine_1.1.42~winehq1-1_amd64.deb
This did install the wine version I wanted, and the game ran fine after that. However the result was a borked apt-get. Tried to remove wine again with the above commands, resulting in apt-get failing to do so because it tried installing wine-unstable and reported errors similar to these : E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'wine-unstable'. see man 5 apt.conf under APT::Immediate-Configure for details. Jul 22, 2010I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

I installed the ia32-libs package and libhal.so, libhal.so.,1libhal.so.1.0.0, libdbus-1.so exist in /usr/lib32.
I am compiling wine with the USB support patches, so I believe I will need libhal.

Debian :: Squeeze Broken After Updates Applied
Aug 25, 2010I am running Squeeze AMD64 and install updates every couple of days. I installed the latest batch yesterday and got a "restart system" message, so rebooted. The usual messages scrolled past for a while, then the screen went blank, and that was it. I tried a couple of times with same result. I booted into maintenance mode to try to find the cause of the problem. Looking at /var/log/messages there is some strange activity going on. Unfortunately I can't easily paste the relevant portion of the file into this posting as the network isn't working (I am posting this from a laptop), but roughly what I am seeing is this:

CPU 0
Modules linked in: <long list of modules>
Pid, 1841, comm: Xorg Not Tainted <some stuff>
<about 20 lines of assorted values>
--[end trace <long hex number>]
and this repeats several times (presumably stopping when I hit the reset button). Sometimes it's CPU 0 and sometimes CPU 1, it mostly involves Xorg in Pid line, and apart from the first instance mostly reports Xorg Tainted.
I could just reinstall but would rather repair as it would be both quicker and more instructive.
Ubuntu Installation :: How To Download And Store Packages For Future Use
Oct 18, 2010I'd like to find out if it's possible to download and store (not install) official Ubuntu installation files, and then choose to install them whenever. I don't always have internet available and having to be connected every time I want to install a program really sucks. What happens if I had to format or something and I just wanna install all my programs again but no internet connection? Is there also away I can back up my Ubuntu and when I restore, I get all my downloaded and installed programs back, without having to re-install?

Debian Multimedia :: Wine Forbids Any MS Office Software In Squeeze 32 Bit
Mar 6, 2011I am currently using Squeeze 32 bit with both gnome and KDE desktops. I have a legitimate office disk, and wanted to use MS word for work due to formatting glitches in Open Office. However squeeze says the disk is corrupt and refuses to progress. This is not so as the same disk works fine in aptosid and Kubuntu. So wine is not very useful in Squeeze whilst it behaves like this. After all it is I suspect it at least should be able to install MS word, though of course no updates are given by MS as it hates wine. Both Gnome and KDE gave the same results, as user or root. I wonder if anything else can be done to Wine to make it work. Perhaps it is something to do with the "free" kernel, I only speculate. Otherwise Squeeze is going very well.

Jun 15, 2010this is at the root of the problems I'm about to describe: Whenever I try to upgrade my Debian installation, I have repeated "size mismatch" errors that necessitate restarting the upgrade process. Since I'm using Debian Squeeze there are lots of upgrades to be done every week. Today, for instance, because I've not upgraded for a few weeks I have to download over 300MB of files to complete the upgrade. However, because of the size mismatch problem this download may well turn into something between 1GB and 2GB, as I repeatedly have to re-download files that were successfully downloaded in the last failed upgrade. What with my ISP limiting me to 7GB per month, I'm finding that merely keeping Debian up to date is using up most of my allotted bandwidth.
I've tried setting the Aptitude preferences not to "remove unused packages automatically", and not to "remove obsolete package files after downloading package lists", but for some reason I still find that files I downloaded in the last failed upgrade have to be downloaded again (and again, ...) whether anyone either knows how to avoid the package size mismatch problem (I can't change my ISP, which has a monopoly on providing internet to my area), or alternatively knows how to set Aptitude not to forget the packages it has downloaded successfully during each failed upgrade, thereby allowing me to avoid such a huge bandwidth usage on my frequent upgrades.
