I have installed and setup Postfix.I have tested Postfix by sending and receiving mail with it.I can see the mail has landed in /var/mail.I will have to setup an IMAP server to deliver the mail to my mail client, Thunderbird.I love easy to use software that is very easy to setup.What recommendations do people have for selecting an IMAP server application?
View 2 RepliesI'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
I've been running Courier IMAP for many years now, but when I added gmail's IMAP to my Outlook I noticed something interesting: when you delete a message, it gets thrown into the trash instantly.
With Courier IMAP (or any other IMAP server, for that matter), when you delete, it first marks it for deletion. Then after you Purge Deleted Messages it either gets rid of them or moves them to trash.
Is there a way to implement this in Courier IMAP?
I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.
After a fresh install of fedora 15 gnome 3 I need to download some packages so I can start working with it. but when I try to get them using yum or packagekit, servers are very slow, so i need to find a fast server for my connection like I used to find in ubuntu. there was an ability in package manager to ping all the servers and choose the best one, and I cant find such thing neither in yum nor in packagekit. Is there anyway to do that in fedora 15 ?!

I installed Cyrus-imap and it is running and listening on 993. When I try to login, it doesn't accept authentication even though I verified the user's password is correct. (tested with ssh)Is there something I have to do with Cyrus or on the server to allow connections to email? I have not used Cyrus before. I am attempting to access my mail folders via Sendmail and did not make mailboxes in Cyrus. I did allow imaps through the firewall.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Debian 8.1 LXDE 64bit on a Toshiba Chromebook cb30 from usb. When I select 'install' the laptop restarts and gets me back to the installer menu. I removed 'quiet' from the boot options and it seems that the reboot happens after initrd.gz is read. I previously installed the 32bit version on the chromebook and the installation process worked pretty much without any issues. I might have added 'mem=1024m' to the boot options, though even if I did, this doesn't do anything to my current attempt.
The chromebook processor according to `uname -a` is x86_64 Intel Celeron 2955U. how I could install the image or start debugging the issue?

I need the IMAP IDLE features but I really prefer the POP way to manage my email. It is really important that all the email I download on my email client is automatically removed from the server but stored locally on my machine. As you have noticed this is the usually behaviour that all email client assumes with the POP server. Since I need the IMAP IDLE I can't use POP, do you know an email client that let me use an IMAP server like a POP one?

I've used Dovecot only in the past but my package manager loads tons of MySQL libraries with Dovecot which is a problem since that's not authorized on my server right now. I can either install it from source or try another application like Courier.

And I would like to get rid of my pop mail storing mails locally in my mail client (which is windows; ms outlook). My ISP doesn't support imap, and I would like to store all my mail on one server, which is located in a good server envirmonment. Plus it's nice to have access to all mail from a web interface when it's vacation/travel time. I was thinking something like having a pop client cheking for mail every couple of minutes on the server, some suedo code follows:
Crontab on local server:

checkmail:
Checks and downloads popmail from external server
mv_mail:

how to install Courier IMAP server and they all say the same thing, but they keep giving me problems.URL... is a link to the page I'm working on.I created the user, edited sudoers manually since I can't effectivly use visudo in the terminal since I don't know how to save. I also made sure that I restarted after I edited it in order to make sure it took effect. I used su compileuser and just logging in as compileuser and opening a terminal. After I made the user and edited that file, I created the directory mentioned and ran the command to create .rpmmacros. After that I got to work on wgetting the files and installing them and what not. The first one compiled and installed and so did the last one. The command "rpmbuild -ta courier-imap4.6.0.tar bz2" would not go though properly. This one I need to run as a non-root user and I've tried using every way possible to be as distant from root as possible, but it still gives me this at the end.

I've installed a mail server per the instructions at [url].
Neither POP nor IMAP test successfully with the user that I just added after following the setup instructions.
This doesn't make any sense. I added the user to the mysql database:

And after I did that, I ran the postfix reload command. If I try to log in as firstuser@mydomain.com, which is the user I created during the setup and configuration process, it works fine.
I checked the virtual mail account's home folder, and under the mydomain.com folder, I only see a folder for firstuser. I'd create one for testuser manually, but I don't know if that'll work since it seems to contain a particular folder structure of its own.
Is there some other command that I have to run? I don't recall having to do anything additional when setting up firstuser.
i want to set up an email server both to receive and send emails. I also am on a dynamic ip scheme with my ISP. I do have a dynamic dns account with no-ip.org the Questions are:
-will somebody be able to send emails to me at the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
-will I be able to send emails from the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
I know i'll be able to login to accounts like gmail and yahoo and download emails from there.. but even that i don't know - even macroscopically how its done:
-is it the sendmail deamon that accepts the mail from <me>@gmail.com, <me>@yahoo.com, <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org?
-is it the sendmail deamon that does the sending of email (as well)?
-can it push emails that I want to send as <me>@gmail.com to the gmail smtp servers (and they in turn will push my email even further)?
-can it push emails from <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org to receipients?
and finally,
-WILL receiving pop/imap servers allow incoming email from my server? or due to the dynamic ip they'll assume I'm a spam server?
I am running SquirrelMail version 1.4.8-5.el5.centos.10 on a CentOS 5.6 64-bit distribution with MailScanner 4.83.4, Sendmail 8.13.8/8.13.8, and Dovecot 1.0.7 release. One user is having problems connecting via the SquirrelMail interface to his e-mail. Whenever he tries to connect, he gets the following error message:

I confirmed the presence of dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache, and dovecot.index.log files in the user's <HOME DIR>/mail/.imap/INBOX folder. The /var/log/maillog files do not list any apparent error messages with SquirrelMail.
My server listens to POP3/IMAP requests. Some users have configured their mailers with high checking frequencies, say once every minute, such that the system logs are full of entries with no significance at all.I'd like to ask if there is a way to limit the per IP frequency of POP3/IMAP access ?I'm using "xinetd" to wrap the "ipop3d" and "imapd" which come with the Alpine package.

The second half of this question involves specification of the message that I want to retrieve. Learning a specific "message number" is messy. I will likely know the TO: and maybe the FROM: details. I might also know the SUBJECT: I'm eager for your suggestions here as well.
