Debian :: Cloud Storage Server Application

Feb 20, 2011

I hope this post is in the right area of the forum.I am searching for the right operating system and application(s) to build a cloud data storage server business like Backblaze.Backblaze uses Debian but uses their own custom application to manage the data, uploads, accounts, encryption, etc... So my real question here is: does anyone have any recommendations for existing application(s) I could use on top of Debian to handle this stuff?

Ubuntu :: Cloud Storage Options?

Jul 30, 2011

In our school I was thinking of moving to virtual desktops for the students, that would revert to a pure state upon every log out. No changes preserved after a session. We use Google docs for office, so that works. But where can we store stuff like Inkscape drawings? As far as I can tell Google storage can't be reliably mounted yet on Ubuntufor a good cloud storage option that we can quickly log into that will give us a folder for storage online?

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup My Own Mini-cloud Storage System?

Jan 26, 2010

I have collected a number of computers over the years, and now I would like to put them to good use. I considered UEC, but many do not support hardware virtualization and all I really need is storage. Over all the machines, I estimate that I have 4-5 terabytes of storage, all going to waste because each one has relatively low storage space. Is there any way I could setup a redundant storage solution that utilities these machines in a networked system?

Ubuntu Servers :: Network Between Cloud Controller And Nodes Is Required For A Proper Cloud Installation?

Jan 12, 2010

what kind of network between cloud controller and nodes, is required for a proper cloud installation? I mean, Does all machines needs to be in same network, in same lan, or may be in MAN or WAN ? how much should be network throughput? 1Mbit/sec , 10Mbit per sec, or 1Gbit/sec? I ask because I need to know the possibility of running nodes on different locations.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mainboard And Storage System - How Both Storage Devices Will Be Supported By Debian

I'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.

how both storage devices will be supported by Ubuntu or Debian??

- SATA-Controller: AMD SP5100
- SAS-Controller: LSI 1068E

Networking :: IP And Port Forwarding From Cloud To Cloud?

Oct 24, 2010

So best if you take a quick look at this image, which describes a network topology: [URL]

I am behind a firewall in the university dorm and many ports are banned. Well pretty much everything besides 80, 8080, 110, 21, 22 and the most basic ones. So I'd like to get around that.

I have a home server that is connected and reachable on the internet. So if you type in 90.90.90.90:80 into a browser it's reachable.

The task would be to set up a port forwarding or how you call it in a way that if I access my home server from the dorm or anywhere, it would act as a forwarder and forward that packet or connection to the 80.80.80.80 server on a specific port, say 2083 so that I can even access my hosting Co's admin user interface.

To sum it up: I'd like to access the 80.80.80.80 server from the dorm on port 2083 which is blocked by a firewall, but I have a home server that is reachable on non blocked ports. The home server has no ports blocked.

OpenSUSE Install :: Storage Subsystem Locked By Application (Y2base)

May 27, 2010

I'm looking forward to using OpenSuse shortly, and hopefully the install is still being performed. I downloaded the GNOME iso and burnt to disc. It was partitioning my win7 drive and creating new partitions. I went to move the YAST screen and that led me to shaking the window (not knowing the screen would disappear).

Now I'm afraid something bad happened. Please tell me I didn't fry my hard drive! At the moment it appears I am running off the cd. I tried to run the Live installer again and got:
The storage subsystem is locked by the application "y2base" (3620).
You must quit that application before you can continue. I cannot tell if the partitioning/installation is still happening.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Suddenly Sees Xls Files As OLE2 Application/x-ole-storage

Apr 18, 2011

All of a sudden, Dolphin is identifying .xls files as "OLE2 compound document storage (application/x-ole-storage)." I searched for xls in Configure desktop, file associations and it still appears as application-vnd.ms-excel. It does not appear as x-ole-storage.

Other spreadsheets (ods, xlsx) are still identified correctly and open automatically in the proper program. This is a new behavior, and I'm assuming it has to do with something I updated in Yast. I'm using KDE 4.6.2 under 11.4.

As a workaround, I added the .xls extension to the file association for x-ole-storage, which allows Dolphin to open the file automatically, but it still asks me to install software to handle the file type. I answer no and then the file opens in Libre Office.

Before adding .xls to the file association, I tried to get this to happen automatically by going through the open with other application menu and checking always use this application. This had no effect.

Networking :: Setting Up A Cloud Server?

Apr 14, 2011

To be short and to the point, I want to setup a service with my clients and allow them to back up to one of my servers. What I would like to do is allow client connections via WinScp to a ssh server that has home directories for each user to backup data. If users want their data I would like them to be able to connect to my apache web server (same as ssh) and download from anywhere.

Is there a way for apache to link web directories on the server to the actual /home/user account and use the same login information/authentication?? Does this make sense? I really appreciate the help. I am not a developer or else I would simply develop a user friendly front end for to an ssh server. Since that is the case I think this is the best solution for me, as well as the easiest for the client.

Server :: Platform For Cloud Computing In Open Source?

Nov 9, 2010

I have a plan to deploy a private or public cloud computing. And I've been considering Eucalyptus, OpenNebula, Nimbus, vSphere, abiCloud and Joyent.

I'm very interested in Eucalyptus and OpenNebula, since they are both open source, they have many features, they both support Amazon EC2 and Amazon APIs and they seem to be able to work with different hypervisors, such as KVM, Xen, VMWare ESXi, etc.

Eucalyptus seem to be very supported by Canonical, because it can work with Centos Server, so I bet it will grow more and more, and we have a good experience with Linux and in particular redhat.

On the other hand, many people told me that right now OpenNebula is better. So the question is:

- which one between Eucalyptus and OpenNebula? The other three choices? vSphere is probably free (if we use ESXi and not ESX) but it's not open... abiCloud seems to be similar to Eucalyptus and OpenNebula... about Joyent, many people say very good things, but I want to know more, and then, is it open source? I mean here, can I use it as free ?

After having built the private cloud, we probably want to also use an external service and create an hybrid cloud. If for private cloud we chose OpenNebula,Eucalyptus, abiCloud or Nimbus I guess the best thing is to use Amazon EC2.

- Is it also possible to use VMWare solution?

- And if we chose abiCloud or Joyent, what can we use to create an hybrid cloud?

About Microsoft Azure and Google App Engine, it seems to me they have many limitations and I prevent it because it could be have a highly cost, so I'm not considering them.

Ubuntu Security :: Unusual Traffic From Amazon EC2 Cloud Server

May 1, 2011

Last night my old Sony Vaio laptop which connects via wired Ethernet and runs Ubuntu 10.10 started hammering the network out onto the Internet. Fired up Wireshark and found lots of traffic between my machine and 174.129.193.12 which I did a whois on and found belonged to Amazon EC2 Cloud Server. The port on my machine was an unknown 5000+ but the port on the remote system was 443 the port used by https, however no browser was running. Did a search and put together a couple of iptable commands to block this IP address which stopped the traffic. I then used nmap and netstat and found port 3000 open and another connection to IP address 91.189.89.76 which I also blocked. Unusually no info exists on this IP when you do a whois. At first I thought it might be some sort of sync as this machine has Ubuntu One running on it, however it could also be something else.

Server :: Process Of Setting Up A Couple Of Virtual Servers In A Cloud Environment?

Mar 17, 2011

I am in the process of setting up a couple of virtual servers in a cloud environment. I am currently working on my application server (Server 1) and am stuck on the creation of my ruleset for this server.

I need to allow SSH, FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and PING on this server. This server will also need to be able to talk with a couple of database servers as well as a memcache server (all internally within my cloud environment)

I have been reading on iptables, since I have never messed with them before, and have come up with the ruleset I will paste below. I have taken other steps to secure my server...changing ssh port, not allowing root to login via ssh without logging in as a user, turning off unnecessary daemons, editing my hosts allow/deny files, just to name a few.

I am a newbie to iptables, so I would love a bit of helpful advice, criticism, and even a good explanation why I should add or remove or edit something. I really want to know the how AND the why!

Server :: Building A Storage And Vpn?

May 15, 2011

I am trying to figure out the best server configuration for the following:Low power (I want to plug the server in and forget about it)High redundancy of data (I don't want to loose my music and documents!)The ability to stream music + movies to laptop (maybe subsonic or Jinzora)VPN server with IPsec or OpenVPN NAS $800 budget 2TB with ability to add more drives :Unix Server with software RAID (maybe RAID6)

VPN setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox
NAS setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox

My Questions:What would be the best raid configuration if I wanted at least 2TB of data and the ability to add more disks when the space begins to add up?What would be the best OS to use for setting up a software RAID (is a FakeRAID a better solution)?Does it make more sense to separate the VPN and NAS with different OS's?My goal will be to access my data from any computer from anywhere but mostly just my Laptop from work.

Server :: How To Best Configure Storage Space

Mar 25, 2010

I'm building an Ubuntu 9.10 home server to essentially backup all my PCs to, serve media, and store other large data (I record music and film). Here's what I have as far as storage goes:
4GB CompactFlash: for OS
2x 500GB WD drives: intended for RAID-1 for backup (which I will in turn back to external drive on a weekly basis)
3x TB Hitachi drives: intended for RAID-5 for media and storage

Both RAIDs will be software-driven. Now, a few questions:
From what I've read, I can benefit from using LVM on top of the RAID. Is this true, and besides the complexity and potential difficulties in recovery in case of disaster, is there a downside to LVM?
Would I benefit at all from using smaller logical volumes on the RAID-5, or should I just make one at the full size of the drive?

Also from what I've read, it seems that XFS may be the best filesystem to use, from a stability and performance standpoint. Should I go that route, then? I suppose that if it IS beneficial to have multiple smaller logical volumes, then there may come a point that I need to shrink and grow these logical volumes, and if that's the case, it appears XFS is out of the question. What's the runner-up; Reiser? I currently have /swap and /home partitions on the CF card. I'd at the very least like to remove the /swap partition and just create a swap file on the RAID-5. Should I move my /home partition to the RAID-5 as well?

Server :: Creation Of Clustered Storage On CentOS 5.5?

Sep 25, 2010

What I am trying to to is set up a cluster as follows:

- There are four nodes
- Nodes three and four have large amounts of storage that will be used for storing user data.
- Nodes one and two will be running a couple of network services.

I'd like have nodes one and two to have a clustered filesystem just between them to store data for the services run only by them.is it possible to share one filesystem between two nodes and another filesystem between two other nodes? The cluster seems to try to make the storage changes across all nodes. They will not be able to spend the extra money to get the same storage in all four nodes. Here is what I have done. I am using CentOS 5.5. After installing CentOS, I did this:

On all nodes:

Code:

[root@node1 ~]# yum groupinstall "Clustering"
[root@node1 ~]# yum groupinstall "Cluster Storage"
[root@node1 ~]# chkconfig ricci on

[code].....

...which I think makes sense because the cluster was supposed to create the PV and the volume group, but did not. I don't even think it tries. The first time it tries to do anything to another node is when I create a logical volume.
