Jan 21, 2010
I don't really know if this is the right place for this, but here we go..
I have a domain and a few emailaccounts on a webhosting service.[URL] I'm thinking about cancel webhosting and just have the domain left.
Can i then somehow use my own debianserver to host the emailaccounts ?

Does anyone know how to go about setting up a secure IMAP email server that is able to be accessed from outside the network? Similar to how you can access your google email account from your computer using Thunderbird.

I have installed and setup Postfix.I have tested Postfix by sending and receiving mail with it.I can see the mail has landed in /var/mail.I will have to setup an IMAP server to deliver the mail to my mail client, Thunderbird.I love easy to use software that is very easy to setup.What recommendations do people have for selecting an IMAP server application?

I'm trying to set up my gmail account with Evolution. I am trying to set up a mail client where -
1) All the mails are stored locally, so that I can work offline. When I reconnect, the client (Evolution) syncs with the server - sends emails and updates any changes.
2) All the labels/folder system to be respected and retained.
After struggling with various sites that argued Pop3 and IMAP (numerous blogs and google searches), I came across this conclusion (pls correct them if they are wrong)-
1) Pop3 allows mails to be stored locally, but will not break them up into folders.
2) IMAP will allow the folder system, but will only store the headers of mail on the local server, and the content will be downloaded as per request.
1) Will Pop3 access allow syncing between the local version and the server version? For instance, a mail read in Evolution should be marked as read when I sign into the web-interface as well.(I can always create a filter/rule that replicates gmail filters)
2) Will IMAP allow me to store all mail locally (isn't this exactly what IMAP is not!)? The combination of imap-gmail-evolution was not so successful when I tried it out - too slow!
PS: I would prefer Evolution over Thunderbird so that I can integrate the Calendar. However, if ThunderBird is the easiest solution, then it's fine too...

I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.

I've been running Courier IMAP for many years now, but when I added gmail's IMAP to my Outlook I noticed something interesting: when you delete a message, it gets thrown into the trash instantly.
With Courier IMAP (or any other IMAP server, for that matter), when you delete, it first marks it for deletion. Then after you Purge Deleted Messages it either gets rid of them or moves them to trash.
Is there a way to implement this in Courier IMAP?

I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.

I recently setup an email server on Fedora Core (14). Sendmail is running and I am trying to authenticate from a client pc using imaps. I installed Cyrus-imap and it is running and listening on 993. When I try to login, it doesn't accept authentication even though I verified the user's password is correct. (tested with ssh)Is there something I have to do with Cyrus or on the server to allow connections to email? I have not used Cyrus before. I am attempting to access my mail folders via Sendmail and did not make mailboxes in Cyrus. I did allow imaps through the firewall.

I need to grant windows client an access to fileserver. The easiest way to do it is how? Setting up VPN server on Windows server, what rules are going into iptables in linux machine then. Or setting up VPN server on Linux machine (which is the best option) and how the user gets to fileserver?

I need the IMAP IDLE features but I really prefer the POP way to manage my email. It is really important that all the email I download on my email client is automatically removed from the server but stored locally on my machine. As you have noticed this is the usually behaviour that all email client assumes with the POP server. Since I need the IMAP IDLE I can't use POP, do you know an email client that let me use an IMAP server like a POP one?

I have been trying to set up an old pIII 700Mhz PC as a local intranet server to run some PHP code.
I have got debian installed setup ssh since it is a headless computer mounted a usb hard drive to store the web page remapped apache2 to use the /mnt/sda1/html/ folder and tested that php scripts are running
now what i can't seem to get working is the following:
ftp access to /mnt/sda1/html so I can upload files from my pc on the network and
phpmyadmin so i can easily manipulat mySQL databases.
after reading [URL] I typed in #apt-get install phpmyadmin
it downloads a bunch of stuff and says it is installing it but when i do the next step in the instructions go to
http://192.168.0.100/phpmyadmin/

The office network has a machine we're using as a fileserver, which is running Windows Server 2003. There are several issues with this, but the main one is that the "Terminal Server License Server" was never installed or activated. I managed to do these things, but to continue requires retail keys which are long since lost. So the boss says we're going to make it into a linux server instead. And by we, he means me. A friend recommended Debian so my research starts here. i have a little experience running an ubuntu desktop at home, using the console quite a lot. And a little bit of experience messing with my own server. however, most of this is new territory for me.
The needs of the organisation:
1. We need a shared directory on the server which all valid accounts can access
2. We need a per-user directory on the server for each user, which only that user or root can access.
3. We need a per-user windows desktop, which only that user or root can access.

Does anyone know if there are only personal preferences between the two IMAP servers or does one of a slight advantage over the other? I've used Dovecot only in the past but my package manager loads tons of MySQL libraries with Dovecot which is a problem since that's not authorized on my server right now. I can either install it from source or try another application like Courier.

I'm trying to set up a small web server with php and sqlite support. I installed lighttpd, php5, php-sqlite3 and php5-sqlite3. Then, I enabled sqlite and pdo extensions in php.ini:
extension=pdo.so
extension=sqlite.so
extension=pdo_sqlite.so
However, when I try to open a SQLite3 database from php:
$database = new SQLiteDatabase($myDB, 666, $error);
I get the following exception:
SQLiteDatabase::__construct() [sqlitedatabase.--construct]: file is encrypted or is not a database
Some readings in the net make me think that my php settings are not compatible with SQLite3 databases. Is anyone successfully working with SQLite3 databases from PHP5 under Debian? Have you any recommendations? Should I rebuild php maybe?

I am putting together a server and computer lab at my school for Standardized testing, and am planning on using debian for it. But first, i must prove to the school board that this is a possible and viable option, so right now it is one pc with 1 gig ram (Going to be the server for this experiment), and two others with around 512 mb ram.the problem with all this is, the computers in the lab cannot have hard drives, as there is some sort of licencing issue. So I need to be able to have these two testing computers boot from the server's hard drive.

I have 2 windows pc's in my home and an office computer that have my files strewn about. I wanted to have them all in one central location that keeps a backup copy, so i used an old machine to start building a file server. I installed debian 5.0 on the machine, command line interface only. I have gotten ssh working so that i can do all my work on the box from one of my windows pc's by logging in with putty.my current problem is how to easily use the box hard drive for storing my files in an easily accessible way. i'm still working on getting samba to work so that i could map the /home directory to a drive letter on my two home pc's, but i'd also like to access files from my work pc. Before i do that, though, i wanted to know if this is safe and secure to map a drive on a remote machine through the internet? Are there any other security concerns I need to be addressing by having this file server set up?

I'm setting up a VPN with openVPN on a debian lenny server. I successfully installed it in the server, then created the certificates and both client (winXP) and server config files. For the client I use openVPN gui. I tested the tunnel and everything went just fine. I even can ping the openVPN server from the XP client.But thats all. I can't ping any machine behind the openvpn server.Some facts that you may find useful to help me with this issue are:
- The openVPN server is not the default gateway of the LAN. The dg is a pfsense server
- I dont have iptables enabled (policy of all chains are ACCEPT).
- I have configured ip forwarding (echo "1" >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward)
[code]....
I have checked and all seems to be OK. I think that the problem is connected with routing the traffic from the vpn to my LAN but I don't know how to do that (besides the push route line in the server.conf).

I've worked with svn as a version control system. I like how it's possible to get context-sensitive svn commands within Eclipse via Subclipse or some other plugin. I know how to set it up both client-side and on an apache server.
Questions:
1) Does it require a centralized server and/or apache mod to host a master repository? I understand that git is distributed/decentralized but am a bit confused about what this means in practice. I did find this article describing how to host a git repository via http. Ideally, our central/master repository would be accessible via some kind of GUI git client as well as the command line.
2) Can anyone recommend a good PHP IDE / git client combination? I'm partial to Eclipse myself because it's free, i know it, and it has an eGit plug in which, although still in early development, appears to function mostly as expected.
3) Any additional comments/anecdotes/thoughts about how I might host a git repository and make it accessible only to my team of devs.

I've set up an postfix+courier imap+mysql server.is it possible to 'move' mailfiles over to the imap store? I have another mail address at my isp provider. And I would like to get rid of my pop mail storing mails locally in my mail client (which is windows; ms outlook). My ISP doesn't support imap, and I would like to store all my mail on one server, which is located in a good server envirmonment. Plus it's nice to have access to all mail from a web interface when it's vacation/travel time. I was thinking something like having a pop client cheking for mail every couple of minutes on the server, some suedo code follows:
Crontab on local server:
0,5,10,15,20..55 * * * * /usr/sbin/checkmail
2,7,12,17,22..57 * * * * /usr/sbin/mv_mail
checkmail:
Checks and downloads popmail from external server
mv_mail:
moves mail from e.x /var/spool/mail/pop/user/cur/* to /var/spool/mail/imap/user/cur/*
Will this kind of setup be possible? is Maildir style popmail compatible with Maildir style imap?

how to install Courier IMAP server and they all say the same thing, but they keep giving me problems.URL... is a link to the page I'm working on.I created the user, edited sudoers manually since I can't effectivly use visudo in the terminal since I don't know how to save. I also made sure that I restarted after I edited it in order to make sure it took effect. I used su compileuser and just logging in as compileuser and opening a terminal. After I made the user and edited that file, I created the directory mentioned and ran the command to create .rpmmacros. After that I got to work on wgetting the files and installing them and what not. The first one compiled and installed and so did the last one. The command "rpmbuild -ta courier-imap4.6.0.tar bz2" would not go though properly. This one I need to run as a non-root user and I've tried using every way possible to be as distant from root as possible, but it still gives me this at the end.
