I often use popcorn time [URL] .... to watch some movies. It allows me automatically to stream a movie to my samsung smart TV (which is connected to the network, but I do not have anything like chromecast connected to it).
Now, seen that it is possible for popcorn time to stream to my TV, how can I do it myself e.g. in the case of a video file or some pictures which are on my PC?
So me and the wife have a extra PC laying around with ubuntu 10.10 on it. We are considering making it into a Home Theater PC. This PC would be for Streaming Netflix, Hulu, internet movies, Playing DVD/BlueRay disk, Printer server, and file storage. The things i'm curious about is how well Ubuntu handles streaming movies? I will have to run a work around for Netflix unfortunately, but for streaming video and using remote desktop to access it from our computers

We will be ordering a projector for this PC, but i'm not sure i want a monitor. Trying to find a way i can remote over and play moviesthrough the projector and then close the connection without logging me out. or something along this line.

Whenever I go to a page with an XviD, all that happens is the little "Buffering" wheel in the corner starts spinning but never plays, and when I click on the "Download and install the XviD Codec" in the middle screen, an error message pops up saying "We're sorry, our content is not compatible with your computer configuration."

It's as if it goes into screensaver mode, but gdm/gnome is not installed. It is a minimal cd installation and it's used as a video server.In earlier releases of FF/Maverick, there is no problem. Not sure if it is the OS or FF. I am leaning toward FF since mplayer/FFmpeg do not have a problem with playing a movie from start to finish.Same problems with FF 4.0, just removed 4.0 and re-installed 3.6.16 and same problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to get a SMART board to work with my install of Lenny on my iBook G4. By work with, I just need it to display what's on the iBook's screen, I don't need any kind of interactivity. Since it is an iBook, it uses a PowerPC processor, instead of an Intel, and the SMART board driver only works on an x86 processor, I can't use the driver provided. Is there any way to get this to work? I imagine that I need to edit the X.org configuration file!

Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0".
I want to stream .avi *divx/xvid* (because of the nice compression and quality) online and have all streams accessible through a web based library type thing. Something like Jinzora ( http://en.jinzora.com/ ) is what I am looking for, but it's buggy. I would even be satisfied with a web based library of streams that you click and open with an external program. I have searched a lot for this and the only thing I found that can do this how I want (if it worked right) was jinzora. I don't want to convert to mpeg4 or flv because of size and quality issues.

As a result, my vlc no longer works: When I run it to display a movie (any movie, I tried several) I get the sound OK, but there is no image, and the window stays small (like when playing a sound file). How do I get vlc to display movies again?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
I just installed a minimal Debian Testing on a USB stick to be used with my Samsung N220 netbook. I installed X and noticed that about half of the keys are not working. I fail to find any configuration tips on google
View 3 Replies View RelatedA relative of mine who uses Debian 6.0.2 has bought a Samsung HMX-H300 Camcorder which records videos in:
1. H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC) format
2. High Definition Video (HD-VIDEO)
3. Standard Definition Video.
I notice that the PC requirement for the camcorder's bundled software, apart from the usual Windows XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7, lists an Intel Core Duo 1.66 minimum CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or higher or ATI HD 2600 series or higher.
My relative has an old Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.30GHz computer which only has an AGP GeForce FX 5200 but after copying the videos from the Memory Card to /home it is just about possible to play them using Totem Movie Player and VLC but, although the audio is OK the video is painfully slow or almost stationary.
Is there a way to view the videos recorded in these formats with this hardware? Can they be converted to another format? Or should he consider buying a better computer?
Does anyone know of any software that would allow me to listen to music on my android phone that is stored on my computer? Most of the ones I have looked at involve having to buy the music, where as I already have a large music collection.

I've tried on a couple of mailing lists to get a decent response, but it's been pretty shabby, so I thought I'd try the expertise of this fine community.I have a, relatively, ancient iMac G4 "Flowerpot" running Debian Testing and XFCE that I was using as a home music server. I write "was" because I could simply mount it using SSHFS from work, but now they have decided to become very restrictive with ports and for the life of me I can't get it working. I've already set-up GNUMP3D on it, but that also uses a port work won't allow.
So, in essence, I'm looking for suggestions on a Web-based application I could use to stream my music from home. Flash does not work on PPC, so anything Adobe-related is out of the question. Also, Java seems "iffy" at best... It's also worth note all of my music is in OGG format, so the program would have to be able to play said format.
I turned on my debian systems. Update tells me that I have 26 updates, mostly to samba. I proceed and it gives me an error saying something about public key not available. Suggests to try smart update. I do that, smart update says I have 129 updates available (reasonable I guess b/c I have not updated in close to a year)
I proceed with smart update...now it says I can install 137 updates, I hit Check, tells me it is downloading packages, then, I get an error:

I don't understand why....What is the solution for this?
I am running Wheezy 7.9 (32 bit) and using Gnome Classic desktop. I have recently had several issues with system "crashes" and such, see some of my recent posts, and for now things seem to be working okay. As part of my attempts to "fix" the problems I looked at the hard drive using the SMART disk utility, and also ran "smartctl". The SMART utility reports that there are 3 bad sectors on the drive. When I run fsck, from a live CD, it does not report finding bad sectors. So why would fsck not find something that is reported by smartctl? Which one should I believe?
As a precaution I am now making daily backups of my /home directory and purchased a new HD just in case. Have not yet installed the new HD but at least I am prepared.
My friend has her laptop plugged in to her TV and it works well, except Movie Player and VLC's video display windows are black. The Desktop display is fine on the TV and I can see the movie on the laptop, but on the TV it is just a black window on the Desktop. Using 9.04 with an ATI200M graphics card.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't get my sisters Ubuntu to play some movies off DVD. I google searched for how to play dvds on ubuntu, and a site says basically "just install Totem" and the dvdlib3 (it already has dvdlib4 installed) so I went ahead and installed totem.I launched totem, but there is no option for opening a DVD, there's only Open File. which would mean I'd have to open the vob files, which are very confusing to navigate.
I tried VLC and VLC couldn't run it, so I tried VLC(Windows32 under Wine) and although it worked in the past, it couldn't read the movie either(the movie is Casino Royale and I watched it just fine on my Windows machineis there an easy method to just install some proprietary software that can play movies with a single click? like with the package manager perhaps? I couldn't figure anything out. It seems like Ubuntu should come pre-ready for DVDs and I don't understand why it isn't.
Can anybody give me a clue why there is no sound when I watch videos via any player or browser?, I've installed "restricted formats codecs", (well I did it many times for GNOME desktop of 11.3 SUSE and it was ok), now when I've installed KDE and downloaded these codecs, there is no sound in any video media I play. Audio card seems to be working and configured just fine, then it should be codecs, but what else can I install instead?

Also I installed VLC and kaffiene with all available codecs but unfortunately I have no sound in my avi movies. I can not know what is the reason although it was working fine in windows.

I've followed the official ubuntu guide on this and it hasn't worked. Even with all the numerous posts regarding the matter I'm still unable to find a fix.
Thus I'm posting here. If I can't get this to work I'm fooking back off to Windows because I've wasted far too many hours as it is.
I'm running P4 2.4 Ghz, NEC 2500a DVD-RW drive. I've also got two other DVD drives, a Pioneer slot drive which I get the exact same problem and another one which I haven't tested yet as it appears to be a software problem.

Had ubuntu 10.10, sound worked fine. wiped that, installed xubuntu 11.04, sound worked fine with banshee. had some stability issues, so i then installed xubuntu 10.10. now, on the fresh install, i only have sound from smplayer when playing videos. NO sound from banshee, vlc(videos or otherwise), parole, or exaile. neither when IEC959 is active no disabled.
here is a screenshot of alsamixer showing that volume is up, and un-muted. and the xfce4-mixer as well.however, the upper right panel indicator looks like a mute symbol, or at least a no volume symbol. ive tried removing, purging, then re-installing banshee multiple times. ive checked the other sound cards listed in xfce4-mixer; they are all un-muted (found this on a couple forums, fixed this problem for a few people, but not me!). What can I do?
