Debian Multimedia :: Set A Non Standard Vertical Refresh Of A Crt?
May 8, 2010
I'm trying to enable a non standad vertical refresh rate of my crt in squeeze/gnome under the radeon driver, which does work under lenny and fglrx out of the box without any additional manual configuration. I already tried adding the VertRefresh option to xorg.conf under the Monitor Section, but that didn't worked out so far. One strange thing is that if i look into the Xorg log file i can see a line which sais as if the driver can see the possible refresh rates, but still in gnome i cant set those refresh rates to be active
# /var/log/Xorg.0.log|less
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 50 V max: 160 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 85 kHz, PixClock max 180 MHz
These are probably only the rates which my crt can handle, but still im unable to set 1024x768x100Hz because the max i get is 85Hz for that resolution.

Recently upgraded to Squeeze, and have a problem with Devede I haven`t seen before. When I try to convert three avi files to play on a standard dvd player, the finished ISO is still only 2,2 GB. It turns out only the first file gets included in the ISO, even though I can see Devede processing all files during conversion.

I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

just installed debian squeeze KDE after years of ubuntu and suse.. For some reason, after I finally got both scrolling and tapping to work, I have a weird weird touchpad through my xorg.conf: - tapping on a tab in chrome closes the tab.
- tapping in a text field pastes txt that is in the clipboard, each successive click keeps pasting the same thing
- the left side of the touchpad is not enabled for vertical scrolling (?), and for some reason the directions are inverted (move finger up to scroll webpage down)
- when having multiple windows open, tapping that window will highlight it, but the previously selected window stays overtop of the now selected windows. Using the actual left click button the windows change normally.

I just built a home media server. It's using a Gigabyte E350N-USB3 motherboard with the AMD Fusion processor. So far, everything seems to be working fair enough. However, when it comes to video playback via an HDMI cable to my TV, it's unwatchable. It is okay during slow scenes, but any sudden movement or high action scenes and the problem becomes obvious.I don't know how to explain it other than it appears to have a problem refreshing quickly enough. I see horizontal lines across the film. I originally thought it might be due to low quality AVI files, but I just tried a DVD and it did it just the same.
I'm pretty knew to Ubuntu, so I'm not sure if there are some settings I can tweak, or if I am missing some drivers. Any ideas on where to start?

After upgrading from karmic to lucid I can't change a default refresh rate for my crt monitor connected to my laptop (lcd switched off). I know radeon driver is trying to check what's the highest possible rate and sets it around 85, but the screen starts to "shiver". If I manualy change this setting in system settings for the screen to 75, it is ok. But I have to do this after every boot I generated xorg.conf and the appropriate modeline (it shows in the screen settings), and I added it to both monitor and screen section. Nevertheless the refresh rate is set to auto again in system settings and the screen wiggles a bit. How to disable automatic detection and force my own settings?
P.S Here's my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
[Code].....

I've got an annoying problem with refresh rates in everything to do with videos. Basically, anything that requires a quicker refresh than using a word processor. This includes flash movies on a website to playing an offline video. In website flash, the video tends to, well flash on occasion. The other sort of thing is pan lines or whatever they're called in videos like a simple .avi movie.
I currently have the nVidia 270.29 drivers installed for my GTS450 card, but this was happening with older versions. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 943 which is detected. The resolution and refresh rates are sort of fixed on auto configuration. What I mean is, is that I can use the drop down menu to change the resolution to a manual option, and then it allows me to select a refresh rate, but only limited to 60 and 75Hz.
This setting will stay as is until I need reboot or restart Ubuntu. Even clicking on Save to X Configuration File is not a keeper. However, here's another problem. Doesn't matter which refresh rate is selected, I still get the above problems. The same resolution and refresh rate yields no problem under Win7 which I've dual-booted with.

I just got a CRT monitor today, used of course, and plugged it in, pleased with many things. However, the screen is blinking subtly as a result of low refresh rate. This monitor is supposed to be 1024x768 @87 hz and 1280x1024 @66hz (here are the specs [URL]. I only get the following from Xrandr:
Code: Select allfoo@debian:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
  1024x768    60.0*
  800x600    60.3   56.2Â
  848x480    60.0Â
  640x480    59.9
Is there anyway I can get my desired resolution? I can't find the xorg.config which I read about.

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files. When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.
Here's my environment;
Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM
I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;
Code:

I have an apache server here that i would like to add a webcam to, to stream video to a webpage hosted on said server. Now i hit some trouble using 10.10 with v4l2 not being able to make use of my webcam.
So this is where i stand right now:
I have ubuntu 9.10 Server installed Apache2 (good install, shows default page on networked computers) Static IP of 192.168.1.4 openssh (works fine) Samba sharing /var/www to my windows machine Logitech C120m connected via USB 2.0
I have tryed 2 guides using both webcam-server and VLC, Neither worked however one would show a single frame when i connected to the webpage when i tryed on other ubuntu desktop, but wouldn't refresh unless i rebooted. I tryed the webcam on my other 9.10 computer and it worked fine with cheese (Video0 is there on the server)
The server has pretty much a clean install with nothing on it (yet). I have 3 empty 40GB hard drives, so installing and testing another release of ubuntu.

I have three monitors, two Dells and an older LG all native at 1920x1080@60Hz and only recently installed Debian on this setup.
The LG is detected as running at 59.93Hz instead of 60Hz and this discrepancy appears to drive up the temperatures in my GPU constantly, even on idle, and introduces severe stuttering in any kind of graphical application.
I had the exact same issue with Windows 7 as well, but was able to fix it by changing the display settings of said monitor to 60Hz refresh, thereby returning the idle temps to normal and removing the stuttering.
My problem now is that I can't seem to change the refresh rate of this screen at all under debian.
xrandr -q returns that the monitor is running at 59.93Hz, but also shows 60Hz as available.
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --rate 60
appears to have absolutely no effect, it doesn't error but it also doesn't change the refresh rate.
Trying to add a new mode with 60hz and modeline obtained from cvt results in the following:
Code: Select allxrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-I-1 "1920x1080_60.00"X Error of failed request:Â BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request:Â 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request:Â 18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request:Â 41
Current serial number in output stream:Â 42
I've also tried to set the refresh rate through the proprietary nvidia driver and manually through xorg.conf, both to no effect;
Here's my current xorg.conf:
Code: Select allSection "ServerLayout"
  Identifier   "Layout0"
  Screen   0 "Screen0" 0 0
  InputDevice  "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
  InputDevice  "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
  Option     "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection
[Code] ....
The driver settings will show 60Hz but the listing for the monitor in the driver and xrandr will still show 59.93Hz. Saving the settings of nvidia-settings to .nvidia-settings-rc was equally fruitless.
The settings on the monitor itself also show it running at 60Hz, without an option to go down to 59.93Hz so I got no clue where that is even coming from.
What else to try, besides buying a new monitor, which I'm not quite prepared to do yet.

I see lots of threads on converting your CDs to MP3s, but I want to do the opposite. I want to burn MP3s into CDs that will play on older CD players that dont have MP3 support.
So how do I do it? I have Mint on this particular computer, which is like having Medibuntu already I think.

Just recently converted and I'm running both Ubuntu 11.04 (the Natty Narwhal?) (about 10 gig partitioned) and Windows Vista.
As said in the title, All DVD's and Video files won't play well: DVD's are pixelated most times, jumpy and sometimes the sound is scratchy - sound usually sorts itself out in a minute or so, but not always and similarly with any video files, like MP4s and other ripped files. I usually use VLC but others also don't work well or not at all. When playing MP4's do work it usually freezes the rest of the computer and I have to force switch off by the main switch as nothing works.
I've tried out tips like the following from users with previous problems on Ubuntu forums but still nothing seems to work: I've installed libdvdcss2 and the latest vlc. I've uninstalled all my players and reinstalled them.
I don't believe it's a restricted format problem as the DVD drive works fine in vista as does all the video files.
I wondered if perhaps my system specs aren't good enough for Ubuntu: intel(r) celeron(r) d cpu 220@1.2ghz 1.5ghz 2 gigs ram 32 bit operating system I drew this while on vista - when I tried to check my system specs using these commands on Ubuntu the "commands were not found": sudo ishw -html > mySpecs.html and sudo 1shw

I have to add my students as a user to a class-server to have them work on some TCP/IP-related questions. The server is Debian Lenny.
It would be easy if I could make some kind of script to add them, even with a standard password like 'abc123'. I want to show them the way FTP uses clear-text passwords as opposed to SFTP. Or the differences between telnet and ssh.
I know something about scripting with bash, but how can I add the same standard password to each user, without having to type it for everyone?

Is it possible to have gnome's display settings recognise higher refresh rates than 56hz, as my nvidia is set to 85hz, but gnome display still thinks its 56hz, and I believe this is causing many programs I'm using to refresh at 56hz. Compiz works beautifully after overriding the refresh rate inside it, as it too thought I was using 56hz instead of 85 but many games aswell as CairoDock as jerky, which makes me think it is a refresh issue.
How can I make gnome know I'm using 85hz?
