Debian :: Possible To Install Non .deb Package Through Standard Procedure
Jun 24, 2010
Just wonder is it possible to install non .deb package through the standard procedure of make config etc in Debian, or better not even attempt it.I need to use several engineering, mathematics packages, Matlab, Maple and Ansys,I have been told to use Fedora, but I would prefer to use Debian, as all my computers run on Debian and its stability etc is well known, not to mention the nice people in the forum, Bugs, Evil etc, well known icons.

With Ubuntu i used some software which only had an installation procedure or a package for ubuntu. Program's such as Ailerus or Usenet Resource Downloader. What i would like to is this: Since Ubuntu is Debian-based, is it possible that software, intended for Ubuntu, can also be installed under Debian? Or is there a slight difference in structure between debian and ubuntu that makes it almost impossible to add software, intended for Ubuntu, under Debian?

I need to get the libstdc++.so.5 library ( on a computer with Fedora 8 and don't wonder why it's so ancient,-there is a good reason for it) but I don't have Internet access from that computer, so I can't get to the online repo's.
However, I do still have the installation disk, and I'm typing this from a computer (SuSE 10) that is half a meter from the Fedora box.
I tried the "ADD/REMOVE Software" option on the menu, but it keeps on looking for the online repo and then if it doesn't get it, it fails.
Is it possible to get this library from the installation disk. How? Could I download the single package from the online repo onto the SuSE machine and then move it to the Fedora machine? How do I then tell the Fedora machine to "incorporate" it.

I was wondering if "Standard system utilities" is like a "must-have". I have installed Debian without "Standard system utilities" and "Desktop Environment" and everything went fine. I'm wondering if I may be missing anything?

I'd tried to run HDD bench mark at my Debian Stable called iozone3. It performed I/O actions which took too long. Ctrl+C to terminate process. Everything went as always. It just terminated. Upon completion of program I used laptop for some more time. During shutting down X-Desktop shut down normally. Terminal window was showing command line with lines <Stopping this and that daemon...> but instead of normal black colour background with white text it changed into red background with white text. What does it mean? Is it safe to restart laptop?

I've used this program for years on Windows and would miss it if I could not use it with Ubuntu. For people not knowing abt HjSplit here's a link that gives u a basic idea. Try it . Its an amazingly simple and useful software especially when u download movies from net and they are split in to many parts. It's just one of those programs that is tiny and just works.Using this software a big avi file can be splited in to many parts as well as many avi files can be fused in to one avi file.2 things are required for successful installation in Ubuntu ....A) Kylix Library.B) Hjsplit installation. Please note that a Kylix library needs to be installed on your computer before running HJSplit for Linux.

I am using NetworkManager Applet in Gnome to connect to the internet with a 3G modem. After last update few days back it changed the way it was recognizing the modem. I used to click on the NetworkManager Applet icon on the notification area and choose my configured mobile connection from the list. Because, as I said, I am using mobile broadband connection and I have to check via SMS my usage in order not to overcome the GB I am supposed to use (to avoid overpriced charge). In order to use Wammu to send/receive SMS I have to close the internet connection by right clicking on the NetworkManager Applet and uncheck "Enable Mobile Broadband" otherwise Wammu can't use the usb dongle because it's locked by the internet connection. Up to this point all is working exactly the same. Except when I uncheck the "Enable Mobile Broadband" the NetworkManager Applet disappears and I can only get it back with a reboot. Also I tried clicking on the applet and choosing "Disconnect" from the menu. The applet stays there but there are no more options for mobile connection. Only wired connections and VPN (whatever that is). In this case if I disconnect and reconnect the usb dongle it recognise it again. So my question is: Is there a way to make NetworkManager Applet to always stay aware of the usb modem without disconnecting or rebooting? Or at least is there a command that can search for new usb hardware without the described procedure?

I have an issue with normal boot (fail safe boot doesn't have this problem). The boot process just stops and nothing happens, I just see the green background, the white lizard and no moving progress bar. I've given it about 40min without touching it, but nothing happened. If I press escape, the last log print says its mounting/mounted the hard drive. Not until I touch the head pad or press a key, it wakes up and the boot procedure continues. I once had a similar problem on opensuse 11.1 which could require much tickling before booting up completely. This was never seen on 10.3, 11.0 and 11.2, but now its back in 11.3.

I have to add my students as a user to a class-server to have them work on some TCP/IP-related questions. The server is Debian Lenny.
It would be easy if I could make some kind of script to add them, even with a standard password like 'abc123'. I want to show them the way FTP uses clear-text passwords as opposed to SFTP. Or the differences between telnet and ssh.
I know something about scripting with bash, but how can I add the same standard password to each user, without having to type it for everyone?

I know that what I am asking is possible. It is a big reason why Unix was/is so successful. I am so new at this that I am not sure how to set it up. What I know to do is to log into each user one at a time and download a package into the users home directory. With seven users, that creates seven downloads of the same package. That is a huge waste of space. How do I download a package once and allow all seven users to run the same package?

I'm trying to install a package the depends on libgfortran1. libgfortran2 and libgfortran3 are installed on the system, but that doesn't satisfy the dependency. Here's the error: The following packages have unmet dependencies: r-base-core: Depends: libgfortran1 (>= 4.1.1-12) but it is not installable Recommends: r-recommended but it is not going to be installed Recommends: r-base-dev but it is not going to be installed is there a way around this problem, (eg; editing a dependency list to libgfortran3)? Or is this version of r-base-core effectively broken?

I am new to Debian but a long term user of various other Linux distros, most commonly Ubuntu at home and Xubuntu for my old work computer. I tried Debian 6 LXDE the other day on the older PC, from a live LXF disc. It picked up all my hardware automatically and was so stable (more so than the Xubuntu LXDE distro on the HD) that I decided to install it.
Now that it is on the HD it is still very stable, but I am struggling with package management and installing "stuff".
I am fairly comfortable with the CLI and have managed to get myself into the sudoers group, install grub and add the old Xubuntu to grub manually (I was not impressed that Debian didn't pick up the other two distros on the machine, even after a grub install and update grub and all the other tricks I could think of).
Anyway, back to package mngt:
First, why is there no pdf viewer/reader by default? How do you start building if you can't read the many helpful articles in pdf?
But more annoying, when I try to install pdfedit, epdfview, evince, okular, pdf-viewer, osso-pdf-viewer or kpdf (at least one of which MUST work in Debian LXDE) using "apt-get install" or "aptitude install", as root or as sudo in the Terminal, why do I get "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched" "Couldn't find package" or "Unable to locate package"? I can't even install synaptic to help!
Then I found that my sources.lst only listed the install CD as a repository (how stupid is that?) so added some repositories to it (eg deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free) and did a sudo apt-get update. And apt STILL can't find anything.
And what is that Debian Installer in the >Menu>System Tools? It asks for a password then nothing opens that I can detect. Is there a GUI for package mngt?
