I did a base install, ran apt-get install xterm twm iceweasel xinit the install went fine, but when i run xinit, it says i need a link in /usr/bin called X to Xauth. I could not locate Xauth.

I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option.When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I down loaded Lenny(5.0.3) all 6 DVDs. However after installing the base the computer rebooted and I am not sure how to install all the other DVDs. I want s "Sumo" install with everything, particularly - Emacs, GCC, Skype, Qt and all the tools for Software development including the latest GCC libraries.

It mentions xorg.conf which does not exist where it tells me to look.I can type "compiz --replace" and it does do something but all the window borders disappear. View 7 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

View 1 Replies View Relatedok, everything worked fine after a fresh 10.04 install, and after some days now i suddenly got several disconnects from the wifi somehow (all other devices in house does not get disconnected, so its a local issue), tried to restart networking, and when i reboot, it works for some hours, then cuts of again. but, after the latest reboot, the sound card is "gone" i suddenly have no sound and a wifi that disconnects at will 13:24 everything worked 110% in all previous ubuntu versions

I do not have access to a wired connection to the web so any thing I have to install is a download on my windows machine and then transfer that to the debian machine. I just finished installing Debian Squeeze but can not get my wireless card to scan for any networks. I found a tutorial at [URL] and followed the steps there. Finding all the dependances and installing them one by one (took me all day). My wireless card still will not scan for networks. After doing a 'sudo ifconfig eth1 up' it still will not scan for networks.

How do I get around this? It wants to get something from [URL] and I do not have internet access. It looks to me like it just wants to download the wl dirver, again, which I have done in the previous instructions I found. I am a retired UNIX (hp-unix) administrator so I know my way around the system.
I recently installed Kodi on my Wheezy system. Kodi works great but now Pulseaudio is not working. I have sound but now longer have the Volume control on the desktop, and when I try to use Skype there is no sound. In Gnome Classic I selected.Applications>Sound and Video>Pulse Audio Volume Control and get this message: Connection to Pulseaudio failed. Autimatic retry in 5s.In this case it is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 Root Window Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.

I have a router that is 1000 Base T and two computers each with ethernet cards that support 1000 Base T. All are equipped with Cat 5e cable. Before I had a router that only went up to 100 Base T and I would setup one box with linux running proftpd. On the other box,I would use win xp pro and use firefox to ftp into the other box and download a file. Download speeds went up to 11.2 MB/sec. Now when I switched routers, I expected something like 120 MB/sec but I'm only getting 5.3 MB/sec. What do I need to change?

The LO program works fine, except that i can't use reports in LO Base. When I'm trying to use a report file that already exists in a base file, i'm getting the message "loading component library <file:///usr/lib/libreoffice/program/librptlo.so> failed.
What should i do to make reports work;
I had made a database in OOO Base, but I guess because of the size, it's not uncommon for it to crash. Now that testing and Sid are now using LibreOffice, is the database any more stable? Or...is there an alternative database package to be used only on a local machine without a server?

When I try to shutdown the system sometimes, nothing happens. the desktop stays put. i can continue working though..the system does not freeze. The only option is to log into the terminal as su and shutdown with the shutdown command.

I'm having some issue running a wine application, this seems to not start 'cause of some missing libraries.
So I tried to locate those and the only one I found is this:
