I'm a newbe to Debian & Linux but I am trying to get a base system installed on a small touchscreen computer without the Gnome environment. I am using Debian 5 but the resolution of the screen has not configured correctly with the command line screen appearing offset to the right.
View 7 RepliesI downloaded the first Lenny DVD for amd64, wrote it but on trying the install on my laptop (Gateway NV5389u) I cant get past the installing base system step: I get an error that some files are corrupt / cannot be read from the DVD. I am wondering whether there's a way I can download a minimal version or just the files needed for the base system installation then use the same DVD to install the packages, coz I have a terribly slow internet connection it took me a whole 2 days to download, and I surely cant stand any more of it.

View 12 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to build a web server but I keep having a problem. Everything loads fine until I get to the "Install base system" part of the installation and it puts up a red screen warning me that the install has failed. My uncle gave me his ubuntu discs and even some different hard drives, but I keep getting the same problem at the same point of the installation. Here is the rundown of everything i did.

two western digital 640GB hard drives
I was testing it out to run a raid 1 just to learn how to make a software raid array. its my first try at making a raid array. The first time i used ubuntu server 10.04 32bit and the system failed at the install base system point. I then used boot n nuke to clean the drives and tried 10.04 64bit. it failed at the same exact point. my uncle gave me 2 western digital 1.0TB hard drives and I tried again. I got the same results. At that point i gave all the hardware back to my uncle and he gave me a server board to try out because he bought it and hasnt touched it. so I built a second system.

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I am installing server 10.04.1 (non-gui) on an old Dell box. All goes well until it gets to the point of "Install the base system". I get a dialog "Media Change" with asks: Please insert the disk labeled 'Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100816)' in the drive /cdrom/ and press enter. I thought that was the disk I had inserted. I looked at the disk in another machine and it appears to be labeled simply "Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 LTS i386". I did a check of the media before starting the install and have even tried a different DVD reader in the machine as I thought it might be an issue with the drive failing to read the disk. I again and again get the error shown above.

Also last time I did it my volume hotkeys didn't work any ideas what else I need to get them working again So summed up: How do I get the smallest installation of GNOME and what do I need to get my hotkeys working?I am waiting on my disc to be delivered so i wont be able to tell you if it helped I also did the base installation with Debian Lenny so I'm not suer if it has the hotkey problem
I down loaded Lenny(5.0.3) all 6 DVDs. However after installing the base the computer rebooted and I am not sure how to install all the other DVDs. I want s "Sumo" install with everything, particularly - Emacs, GCC, Skype, Qt and all the tools for Software development including the latest GCC libraries.

I did a base install, ran apt-get install xterm twm iceweasel xinit the install went fine, but when i run xinit, it says i need a link in /usr/bin called X to Xauth. I could not locate Xauth.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with Lubuntu. First of all I installed it on my old laptop (amd sempron 1.6GHz, 512MB ram, s3g vga) as windows seemed to slow down my system. Installation was good, but the problem is screen resolution which is only 800x600 and there is no higher res option. Laptop's native is 1024x768. I searched a lot about how to change it but there is no post for lubuntu (everything is for ubuntu, xubuntu, and doesn't seem to work in here). Beyond that isse i I feel Lubuntu is running much better than windows and I want to use it. Using Lubuntu 11.04. Let me add that when I tried Lubuntu 10.04 it didn't have this problem (all resolutions where available).

I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option.When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads

One day when i logged in, my screen resolution became lower. The sistem do not recognize anymore my old resolution (native) 1600x900 . And you can realize that maybe there are problems with the video card, because the system is slower than before in this terms. What could have happened?

I've been googling around for a while now and have been unsuccessful in setting up the screen resolution up properly... I have the manual for my monitor in case you ask for any of the specs. Other than unsuccessfully changing the xorg file, I've successfully went through the steps on Debians wiki site for NvidiaGraphicsDrivers in order to get my 9800gt working. I want to get the resolution upto 1400x900, but in the "Screen Resolution" window I only have the option for 640x480,50Hz

I am on a Debian 5 server and there is no desktop environment installed.I use mysql client on localhost and it's very hard to read tables with the lowest screen resolution.Is there a way to change it? What can I do? this new serie resoletion screen but the system allows me to be in graphical mode. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just changed the desktop on my thinkpad from awesome to i3. And now I have some very strange issues with the screen resolution. Because at home I use this x60 thinkpad on a dockingstation and a 19" display. As long as I used Awesome as my Desktop, the display manager as well as the desktop itself could handle the different screen resolution depending on if I'm out with just my 12" on my thinkpad or with the much bigger screen on my home 19" display.
I can understand that i3 maybe cannot handle this alone and I need xrandx to enforce the screen resolution. But why is the display manager (lightdm) also affected by this change? What is so different that even the DM cannot find the proper screen resolution?

When I try to change the screen resolution via the gnome menu I just can choose the 640x480 resolution and 50Hz refresh rate.
I've googled the issue and had a little luck, though I can't seem to change my xorg.conf file because permissions are defailed. This is the example xorg.conf file I wrote based upon my original and the modifications:
