Debian Multimedia :: Can't Find Any Answers - External Disk And Lottanzb
May 22, 2011
I have 2 questions of which i can't find any answers to.
1) every time when i download something using lottanzb, lottanzb doesn't unpack the files automatically. It happens to every download. [URL]..0dselectie001p shows the full folder where files are downloaded in.[URL]..shows what happens to the par2 files.I don't know what is going on and why lottanzb is doing all this.
2)I have a external disk divided in 3 partitions. 1 partition is a partition for my email program (Icedove) whit all the necessary files. Since a few days i noticed that i first have to access the external disk and/or partitions before it is "active". I.e.: when my pc is started up and i start Icedove, i don't see my mail and all the (sub)folders i created (all the mail is on a partition on the external drive). But when i first access the partition containing all the mails and then start Icedove, then i see all my mails and (sub)folders.

I've been attempting to install GEANT4 (a physics simulation program thing) however, I keep running into an issue. I've attempted to find answers within GEANT Documentation, but this seems to be experienced often by users, but not addressed within their documentation. Anyways, when I try to build it says I have installation errors, and the only one I can find within the output is this:
Code:

I would like some info regarding an external backup hard drive I use. This carries a lot of text and sound files that I need frequent access to, and I would like to be able to quickly search on that drive using the standard GNOME tracker search facilities. The drive is connected via USB and mounted to /media/hhrutz/Mnemo2.
I have the following questions:
- the database is maintained on my laptop's harddrive in $HOME/.cache/tracker and $HOME/.local/share/tracker/data, correct?- therefore, it would not be a problem for the tracker to update its data if I decided to mount the harddrive in read-only mode?- is it possible to get an overview about the size of the database?- do I have to keep the button "Include removable media" in the "Indexing Preferences" checked?
In other words, is this harddrive understood as a removable media?- if so, can I exempt this drive from "Garbage Collection". That is, I generally do _not_ want to index for example USB thumb drives and such, so I use the default 3-days expiry settings. Does that mean, all the gathered data from my backup harddrive will be gone if I don't connect that drive every two days? Can I prevent that? Because the indexing takes extremely long
I also notice that while the tracker is spinning my harddisk, it doesn't ever seem to advance. It stays at "1%":
> 10 Jun 2015, 18:03:25: 1% File System - Crawling recursively directory 'file:///media/hhrutz/Mnemo2'

Okay so a newb question but I typed the simple command sudo apt-get install lottanzb to install lottanzb after adding the testing repositories (currently using Lenny stable) and got a huge shed load of things updated including AWN from the testing source as a result (pages of them flashed by) and it removed some things like Epiphany browser.
Got a load of errors at one point during this including
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6.postinst: line 165: [: missing `]'
Usage: /etc/init.d/cron {start|stop|restart|reload|force-reload}.
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6.postinst: line 165: [: missing `]'
Status of Common Unix Printing System: cupsd is running.
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6.postinst: line 165: [: missing `]'
checking separate queue runner daemon...done (not running).
[Code]...
Am I being dumb here or does that mean I`m now basically using Debian testing as a result and if so how can I undo it yet keep LottaNZB? With the errors am concerned in case I reboot and the system goes from stable to unstable. I chose Debian for the stability so don`t want the testing versions, and have no idea why a simple install command updated so much stuff. EDIT: It bigtime messed it up, when I logged out and logged back in system was unusable and I had to reinstall as tried apt remove but it didn`t undo it. Quite surprised that Linux breaks easier than Windows though

I recently upgraded to 10.04 and during the upgrade process my external hard disk was plugged in. Now everytime I boot up ubuntu informs me that sdb1 is missing and wont boot up till I ask it to "skip" waiting for it. Also I am assuming because of this I have trouble mounting any other external hard disk other than my own, keeps giving some sort of unable to mount problem

not trolling for a flame war but I simply added the testing repository earlier and did an apt install of just lottanzb and it ended up taking ages and installed lots of new files and removed things like Epiphany etcetera, and that one command had me having to reinstall as it messed everything up so it wouldn`t work at all even the shell was messing up.I have never had Windows break totally from an install, but first try with Linux and it did so could someone explain why an apt-get install lottanzb would change all my libraries, config files etcetera with the testing version over Lenny stable?

Since I installed Debain Squeeze with KDE (for more than a month), there is something I cannot explain to myself. 5-10 minutes after bootup my hard disk begins to work very intensely. Then, after 2-3 minutes it comes back to its normal operation. Using "atop" I found out that the first process that squeezez my HDD is "find". Then, a little bit later, mount.ntfs-3g appears. Both do what they do, then exit and everything's back to normal. What I suppose, is that that something is searching, first on the Linux partitions, then on the ntfs partitions.
Does anybody know what is this phenomenon related to? Or at least, how could I find out. Ah, and to avoid some basic troubleshooting questions: I have 3 GB of RAM, so no swap is needed. And I repeat: it's find and mount.ntfs-3g that use the HDD.

A few weeks ago, I've noticed that my FullHD external LCD (LG Flatron W2243S), which was working without any flaw, can't be setup to reach 1920x1080 anymore, even after a fresh install. My graphics card is Nvidia G105M (I'm using Nvidia proprietary drivers), and I used to configure my monitor with nvidia-settings which usually took something like 30 seconds to setup twinview. However, this monitor is now detected as CRT, and resolution can't be setup to more than 1024x768, which is horrible. I've been trying to use xrandr to setup resolutions, but xrandr -q prints this line:
root@polaris:/home/user# xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
(...)
I've been trying several solutions, but nothing worked until the moment. I can find many users reporting this kind of problem across the internet, but any solution.

As per the title, really. I've upgraded to 11.04, ran updates, but I can't stop LottaNZB randomly crashing out. It will be running fine one moment, then 'zap' it disappears. I've tried going through the apps running at the same time, and there doesn't appear to be any pattern. In fact, I've left it running with nothing else open and have returned to a computer with no running apps. Sometimes, however, it will run fine for several hours, completing all of it's downloads, although this is pretty rare. LottaNZB's logs appear to wipe after a crash (unless I'm missing something) so I'm none the wiser why it happens. Has anyone got any ideas what to try next? It ran faultlessly on Ubuntu 10.x

I recently got a new external monitor for my laptop, and connected them by VGA. This is what 'xrandr' tells me:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096
LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
1280x800 60.0 +
1024x768 60.0
800x600 60.3 56.2
640x480 59.9
VGA1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 290mm
1920x1080 60.0 +
1600x1200 60.0
1680x1050 60.0
1280x1024 75.0 60.0
1440x900 75.0 59.9*
1280x960 60.0
1280x800 59.8
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0
720x400 70.1
However when I try to change to some of the higher resolutions, such as 1920x1080, all I get is a corrupted and flickering image. As indicated above, I am currently on 1440x900@59.9h,z but for some reason 1440x900@75hz doesn't work. The same seems to be true for 1280x1024. The three resolutions above that all cannot be selected properly. I tried setting the resolution to maximum in Windows XP and it worked, and my video games console can set it to 1080p, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the monitor. Is there anything I can do or is this some kind of bug or limitation of the graphics driver or something? The graphics chipset of the laptop is an Intel 945GM, which I believe should be capable of displaying 1920x1080. I am running debian unstable with what seems to be the most up to date version of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

I have a Dell XPS M1330, which has a GeForce 8400M GS GPU. The binary (sigh) nVidia driver installed is version 190.53 (installed by sgfxi). This is working well: glxgears gives me about 2600 FPS and compiz is happy. An old Philips 170B is attached by VGA cable. I was looking to set up a method of switching resolution upon connecting to the monitor when working at the desk, since I don't like the 1280x800 resolution of the laptop.
nfortunately, I can't get any output on the external monitor. It does work under Ubuntu, which installed the 180 series binary driver. (Going to an earlier driver is an option, but I want to understand the problem.) Bottom line, I want to work under Debian. As far as I know, nVidia's proprietary driver doesn't support xrandr. At any rate, with he external 170B monitor attached and turned on, I get the following:$ xrandr -qScreen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 800, maximum 1280 x 800default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm
1280x800 50.0*
1024x768 51.0 52.0
960x540 53.0

I have registered 2 nameservers running bind for a certain domain. The log file of my domain name provider (SWITCH) shows the following warning:
Warning Der Name-Server ns.xxxxx.ch (nn.nn.nn.nn) beantwortet rekursive Anfragen.
In English that would be:
Warning: Name-Server ns.xxxxx.ch (nn.nn.nn.nn) answers recursive queries.
The NS triggering the warning is running openSUSE 10.2 and the other one 11.1. Both configuration files /etc/named.conf are equivalent (well, forwarders are different). There is no such warning for the NS with 11.1. When I add "recursion no;" to the options in /etc/named.conf the warning goes away, but FF or SeaMonkey running on the server no longer get their DNS requests resolved.

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I installed Debian Lenny on a friend's computer which is an older Dell workstation. The install went well. I delivered the machine last week, got it set up in there house and all was fine. 2 days later they said it crashed with a black screen and lots of words they didn't understand. I get there today and rebooted. X would not start but it ran a whole bunch of automatic self tests but could not recover. I was able to log in as root and run fsck. That made the necessary repairs. I was able to reboot and log into the KDE Desktop. Hopefully they don't break it again.
I asked them what they did to it to cause it to freak out like that and they had no idea. So, as to my question, what causes something like that? I know there must be a log file somewhere on the computer that will give me some insight into the matter, but I'm not sure where to find the file.

I have a problem with my partitions being shrunk after VirtualBox PUEL 4.0.2 install. I tried VB OSE, loaded XP Pro and all necessary programs and realized it does not support sharing of folders. I then removed it and installed PUEL with XP Pro and all the same programs. The USB would not work in PUEL so I removed it and installed it as root to see if it would access the USB's. Halfway through the install it hung and gave me a space error.I cannot get the space back from whatever VB did. I deleted the .vdi's and all VM's and reinstalled VB PUEL to see if I could recover it. Nope. Then I tried GPARTED to try and reset whatever is reading the sizes incorrectly.sudo df -Th gives me:

I am trying to configure my test Squeze install on an older PC with LXDE desktop, and I can't seem to find anything which would enable me to mount a floppy. Then I tried to use the konsole as root mount -w /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
But although this device and this mount point exist, nothing is mounted. I double checked with various floppies which I know have data on them and none of them are being mounted. The umount command would I expect be umount /media/floppy0 /dev/fd0...I tried searching the web and this forum and didn't find anything helpful. Can anyone help?

I just decided I'd give Google Chrome a try. Installed it via the google repository and it went fine.
However, every now and then it just vanishes from my menu and it can't be found again, also the command in the terminal can't find anything.
So, what's left is to reinstall it, and during reinstall it doesn't even whine about already being installed.
Anybody else with this matter? I am running 64-bit Squeeze.

I have it installed and running nicely so I am following sqlpython's "How To: Full multimedia in Squeeze" to get my various players playing. sqlpython seems to have been running a KDE environment while I am running Gnome, but that should not make a critical difference.

BTW, which of these would be more appropriate for my 64-bit squeeze?
