I'd like to replace my HP CD-Writer+ 8290 external CD burner. It works fine with Windows but is flaky in working with Linux (across multiple distros).I'm interested in buying an external DVD burner. If you use an external DVD burner with Puppy Linux or any other Linux distro, what are you using? Is there a list of external DVD burners that work with Linux?

I am using VLC to capture video from my webcam. So to set the video device I use /dev/video0 (built in webcam), but I need to specify the path to the built in mic and I can't find what that path is. If it help any, it seem my system is configured to use pulse audio instead of alsa. Is there any script to run to find where my mic is "pathed" at? arecord -l returns this:
$ arecord -l

I have 2 questions of which i can't find any answers to.
1) every time when i download something using lottanzb, lottanzb doesn't unpack the files automatically. It happens to every download. [URL]..0dselectie001p shows the full folder where files are downloaded in.[URL]..shows what happens to the par2 files.I don't know what is going on and why lottanzb is doing all this.
2)I have a external disk divided in 3 partitions. 1 partition is a partition for my email program (Icedove) whit all the necessary files. Since a few days i noticed that i first have to access the external disk and/or partitions before it is "active". I.e.: when my pc is started up and i start Icedove, i don't see my mail and all the (sub)folders i created (all the mail is on a partition on the external drive). But when i first access the partition containing all the mails and then start Icedove, then i see all my mails and (sub)folders.

My DVD/CD burner is rather old now (going on 5 years), and I've had some "quality" issues when I've been burning stuff for the past year.
CD's: When I play a burned CD in my car stereo, the songs have a "skipping" sound to them on the low-volume levels of the audio. I use K3b as my burning software, and it seems to be the best, but am I wrong? Is this a common problem?
DVD's: Specifically video DVD's. After converting the .avi to an image file using DeVeDe Creator, it gives me a file that has the .iso and I burn the disc using K3b. It's really hit or miss.
The question: is there a way to test the performance of my DVD burner to make sure it's working properly? Is there a way to calibrate the mechanism? I have a new External DVD/CD burner that supports "LiteScribe" (I could be mistaken on the name, but it's a technology that allows you to create a picture on the opposite side of the disc), but my INTERNAL is a 5 year old Lite-On.

I know I can use things like regionset and VLC to bypass region encoding (which I already do), I was really wondering if you can actually purchase a drive that is "region free" without having to apply hacks/ patches/ voodoo etc.I've done the "google thing" and all I come up with is hacks while using windows, I'd really like to get a drive that is completely region free.

I did a backup to an external drive without mounting it so it crammed my root partition to the brim. No worries, some kind soul on here helped me out of that pickle by pointing me to where that partial backup ended up.
However Dolphin now mounts my external as "John Doe 500gb -1." "John Doe 500gb" still exists in Dolphin and I cannot find a way to blow it out so my backup paths are inaccurate as they are not looking for the "-1." Consequently Luckybackup just dumps the backup right back into the root again.
To resuscitate my root partition, I was able to delete files from inside the "JD 500gb" but I cannot delete directories or the whole thing altogether. I tried going into system settings and "forget" it as a drive but that was not the right animal for the job as it doesn't clear Dolphin. I guess I could just rename the drive and make new backup paths but I'd like to learn how to fix the problem instead of a workaround. I did search the net and this forum because I figured it was a common question but couldn't find the right search parameters to get an answer.

Ubuntu 9.10 recognizes my Freecom 120gig external hard-drive (when it's plugged in) and I can manage its contents OK - except via the command line. I don't seem to be able to find its path-name. See below:
mike@mike-desktop:~$ cd /media
mike@mike-desktop:/media$ ls
cdrom cdrom0 FREECOM HDD
mike@mike-desktop:/media$ sudo fdisk -l
[Code].....
Despite all this info, I fail to get into the external hard-drive from the command line.

I am trying to install Staden on a Ubuntu 10.04 machine (64bit). It requires a number of dependencies to be installed prior to configuring the source. I was fortunate to find all of them using the synaptic package manager. now for the configure command I need to specify where these dependencies are as options.
how do I find the programs that I need to reference as options to the configure command such as: tcl, tk, zlib, xz utils, libpng, curl, tklib, itcl, itk, etc. Is there a standard directory that synaptic uses or what?

Assume I call a certain tool in terminal like
foobar -myoption
But a) there exists more than one installation of "foobar" on the system or b) I don't know where "foobar" is installed.
How can I find out WHICH foobar resp. WHICH path belongs to the currently active foobar tool?
I prefer a cmdline command with option similar to:
findactivepath -tool=foobar
....
Output: Used location=/usr/bin/foobar
I don't want to dig around with PATH investigations by searching every PATH component. Furthermore I don't want to get recommendations and expectations like "normally tools are installed in...". Think of unusual installed software.

I'm using bash scripting to find any file that matches a path governed by the following regular expression:
"(monthly|nightly).[0-9]+/home/(user1|user2)/.mailbox/"
to match files like:
monthly.9/home/user1/.mailbox/l23131564
nightly.15/home/user2/.mailbox/cur/6546213
I've tried:
Code:
myRegex="(monthly|nightly).[0-9]+/home/(user1|user2)/.mailbox/"
find ./ -regextype posix-egrep -regex $myRegex
and it just spins and never gives me an answer, even though the file structure isn't that big.

I have this weird problem. The other day I asked a question about restore the backup file after dual boot installation. I have done the dual boot ( XP installed first) then restored the backup file. Now the problem is that I forgot if I excluded system files from backup or not, so when I restored and rebooted, my installations got messed up, many programs do not find their path to run, etc. But the real problem is when I rebooted again, I got error 15: file not found tried to follow some other posts here to solve this and noticed that running fdisk -l gives me:

I am running Debian Squeeze, 64-bit.I would like to try my hand at bash scripting. So at the author's suggestion (first chapter of Chris F. A. Johnson, Pro Bash Scripting from apress) I created a /bin directory in my home directory. So now I would like to modify my PATH statement so that when I run a script from my bin directory my shell will find it.I did that. He then says that I should add this to ".bash_profile, .bashrc, or .profile depending on how bash is invoked." The find command is unable to locate any of these files. So I searched the forum, found the link above and tried to follow that. No luck so I assume that how Debian handles PATH statements has changed since that post?
I also have checked the wiki and worked Google as hard as I know how to do.Very simply where the heck is my PATH statement and how do I modify it?

I am trying to install syslog-ng-3.0.2 on Fedora 12 and have run into an issue I don't know how to solve. When runing the "configure --enable-ssl" I get the following "checking for pkg-config... (cached) /usr/bin/pkg-config checking pkg-config is at least version 0.14 checking for GLIB - version >= 2.0... 2.0, bad version string no configure: error: Cannot find GLIB version >= 2.0: is pkg-config in path?" I have glib-2.24.0 installed on this system so I don't understand where this issue is coming from or how to fix it.
Back ground on my system -
[root@syslog-ng]# set PKG_CONFIG=/usr/lib/pkgconfig
[root@syslog-ng]# export PKG_CONFIG

I am having a big problem trying to allow PHP to scan files, using clamav libs in PHP.
I downloaded the relevant files from:[url]
Anyways I am stuck on the tutorial for installing it in the 'INSTALL' file, where it says to run the command:
Quote:
It runs for a duration but then halts on the following error:
Quote:
It suggests that 'configure:3465' that the files where not found going by the line above that.
Not being in the default path, does anyone know where to make libclamav work?
An easier way of locating such files that it's looking for?
