I recently installed F11 and customised the gnome panel with various custom application launchers. After the latest upgrade all my custom launchers have disappeared, the only ones left are firefox and thunderbird.

However I can't seem to add a custom launcher or if I install a application and the .desktop file is created and placed in ~/.local/share/applications the application is not appearing in the search for that application. How do I add a custom application to the list of applications installed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a script that toggles my touchpad on and off and I assigned it a custom keystroke using gconf-editor. It worked fine until I upgraded to Natty and now I can't make it work anymore. I checked and the script is still the value of 'command_1' and the same keystroke (<Alt>t) is still the value of run_command_1 in the universal keybindings. But, for whatever reason, when I hit <Alt>t, nothing happens. I've tried using assigning different keystrokes, but nothing has worked.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have a question about customising the toolbar in the file explorer, which i think is called nautilus. i was able to add a few buttons by hacking about in /usr/share/nautilus/ui/nautilus-navigation-window-ui.xml ..but they were already defined actions. what i would really like to add is custom launchers. i have whipped up a python script that will foo and bar a glob of files in a directory, which i can pass as an argument to the script, and i would like this to be a toolbar button so i can just click an icon up there. so the launcher would need to know what directory is open in the tab which is in focus, or alternatively be able to launch from that directory as current working directory and then i can dig out the path in python. a keyboard shortcut for the launcher would be nice too

The only real issue is that I lost the transparency settings for the menu & indicator applets on my top knome panel. I simply don't remember how i did it last time, and i've been searching the net for an hour for a solution with no luck. Many results suggested the use of the Compiz Settings Manager's opacity settings, but that opacity applies to everything, including the text & icons. I thought i used the "gnome color chooser" package to do it last time, but I cannot find the option in the gui. how to make the background of the menu (applications/places/system) and indicator applet have transparent backgrounds while retaining full text/icon brightness?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Unity 0.2.46 on Ubuntu 10.10. Installed from a ppa. The only way I have found to add an application launcher to the panel is to actually launch the app, then right click it's icon on the panel and click "Keep in Launcher". This is great but I've noticed at least one of my applications (Mumble) doesn't give me that option. Is there an alternative method? (see screenshot for example)

I m trying to get everything down one side and delete all the panels as I had awn or cairo menu in 10.10. View 6 Replies View RelatedRight after I did the distribution upgrade on debian, the little launchers in the bottom panel don't work right. When I have many programs running, and try to click the launchers to change programs, they don't always change right away. If I click the program windows, (if they are not maximized) they change fine.
I can click on the launcher for the program that is currently running on top and it will minimize and maximize, but I cannot change to another program right away by clicking the launcher. However, if I first right click the launcher, then it will respond to the next left click and the window will come to the top.
I wondered if it is just broken on my account, not the whole system, so I made a different account on the machine and it does not happen there. The new account works normally. So I am wondering how to reset my profile or theme or something to make the left click on the panel launchers work.
I don't know what they are actually called, but I am not talking about the shortcut launchers to start the programs. I only mean the little minimized box that stays in the panel when the program is already running.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and this is my first experience with Unity. I have managed to create launchers in .local/share/applications and drag them to the launcher to add desired shortcuts. Here are two questions I have:
1) I am adding many shortcuts to various directories I frequently use; the shortcut's have commands like nautilus /home/user/some/dir. Despite the fact that I change their icons, when I drag them to the launcher they all use the Nautilus icon. Is there a way to fix this?
2) Is there a way to group the launchers? For example, having a group for office applications, and a group for directory launchers?
Just upgraded my FC12 to 13 using preupgrade.On booting up into 13 my panel at the top of the screen that normally holds the menus/system tray etc doesn't seem to have initialised. It's just not there.I had a message about "no system tray detected on this system" which I assume is from one of the applications trying to start up in the systray.I've not found anything obvious in the logs, but then I may not be looking in the right places.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
I have just upgraded to Fedora 14, with some hope that a F13 kernel crash issue would be resolved. Alas, not, and I have lost audio in one of my sound cards. I am using 2 sound cards in my computer. The first one (VT 1708 on the M2V MX SE motherboard) is used for FLDIGI (ham radio program). The other one (Creative Labs SB Live!) is tied to a speaker/microphone. At some point in mid 2010, I started getting kernel crash reports (not sure which kernel version this started), and the VIA VT 1708 audio controller stopped working. The SB Live! card works fine.

I feel little silly asking this, I accidently removed from my gnome panel my internet connection, volume control and battery indicator on F11. how can I add this back. It does not show up in the add to panel menu and the applications do not give you back the default feel.

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust spent three whole days barking up the wrong tree, solving Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 boot failures because the correct hypothesis was illogical: installation did not update/modify the initrd.
The first couple of times I installed Fedora 11 on the HighPoint Technologies RocketRaid 2640x4, the installation inserted my "custom" driver module (rr26xx) into the initrd, permanently, so that the system booted off the controller card for which the custom driver was inserted. (I yelled about this success in this thread: [url]
My most recent installs of BOTH F11 and F12 on the RocketRaid failed to properly set up the boot. It turns out that the "rr2640" module I "slipstreamed" into the installation process was *NOT* permanently added to the initrd by anaconda. (F12 gave me "no root device found boot has failed, sleeping forever", on boot; F11 hung also, without such error, I presume, during the init script execution). Because of limited resources and time, I only know for sure the module was missing from the F11 initrd, and am ASSUMING the same was the case with F12.
The only difference between the successful installs and the ones with failed boot is that the successful installs were made on a single-drive (JBOD) mode on the controller; whereas, the failed ones were placed on RAID 5. But, AFAIK, the created logical device for the card is "/dev/sda", in both cases, and the kernel can not distinguish between the two cases (or can it?). Thus, the inconsistency cost me a lot of time, and is still inexplicable to me.
Question: What is the best way to deal with custom drivers, today? There are custom spins, and many tools, like isomaster. Stupid question: Is there a way to modify the initrd inside an installer ISO -- be it for CD/DVD/USBboot drive -- beefing the init RAM disk with whatever modules you'd like, for the boot process (using, say, isomaster)?
And what makes anaconda understand that a module must be added to the initrd ? How can one force anaconda to do so?
How does moving to dracut as the initrd tool affect any/all of the above?
13.37 default Xfce version panel clock not persisting custom format. Carry on. It would help if I didn't have two installations and I only configured the clock on one of them.

In the course of modifying the desktop icons, this was deleted. I have looked, searched, Google'd etc, to find a process to restore this transparent folder. No luck so far. I have placed the icons back, all works correctly, though I would like to know how to recreate this transparent rectangular panel.
