I have a Debian Sid x86_64 installation on my laptop. I used to use skype a lot when I was on ArchLinux in chrooted 32bit environment. Nowdays, I tried running skype straight on the 64bit environment, when I finally got it running, I couldn't get into sound settings, it froze right when I clicked the Sound options... So I decided to make the 32 bit environment, so I used debootstrap and schroot and now I have fully functional 32bit chrooted system. It does the same thing all over again! it drives me crazy... I should probably tell you, I use pulseaudio. This makes it a little hard to like the distro for me... I used to be an ArchLinux user for quite few years, but I didn't want to solve so many things every day, so I went with debian

I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.
I've read and execute the info write in this guide :

When I type skype , I receive this message :

Here is the new version that works with Fedora 13. It installs the latest Skype from the Skype repository (apparently the Skype repo was outdated in the past, but now it contains the same version as on the Skype website). First, create the skype.repo file in the zq3tf/etc/yum.repos.d directory:

Third, one may have to install a few libraries that Skype needs. If you're interested, you can find out more about these libraries with ldd /usr/share/skype and with yum provides *..., but this is not required for installation. All you need to do is (got this from Krellan's post):

I tried downloading skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586.rpm and double-clicking on the .RPM and letting KPackageManager handle it but that returned and "unknown error". I'm new to Linux. I've just installed Fedora and I'm wondering how to install Skype since it is not inside the repository. I use a 64bit system. I've seen that it is possible to download it from Skype home page. On some websites I've read to download the dynamic package, not the one for Linux, I did it, it is a compressed file, I've uncompressed it but now I don't know how to go on.
The readme file says to copy the bynary into usr/bin (is the binary the file called skype with no extension) and to install the folders avatars, icons... into usr/shared/skype. I've pasted the skype file into the usr/bin folder, but how do I install the folders, I've tried to copy them in the position, but it doesn't work? What about the files skype.conf and skype.desktop, what do I have to do with them? If this is not the correct way to install Skype, what should I do?
I've added a couple of extra repos in my x86_64 Fedora 11 KDE installation.Namely, skype and rpmfusion and no rawhide stuff.I've asked then to install skype (Skype 2.0.0.72).While I was expecting a lot of packages because skype has decided not to support 64bit environments, I have found some very weird packages within the 79 item list.

What can I do?
I'm trying to get skype to work on my new system. It seems to install, but trying to run it I get an error message naming a missing dependency. Searching for this with yum whatprovides and installing the result worked in one case, but for the next one, yum install <package containing missing item> returns a few errors of the form:
package <name-version>.fc12.x86_64 (which is newer than <package-version>.fc12.i686) is already installed Is there any way around this? I'd like to get skype working, but am having no luck at the moment. I'd prefer not to remove the .x86_64 packages if I can avoid it in case that breaks something else.

When I restarted my computer I couldn't boot my old OS or install the new OS. When I go to recovery mode I don't know what to do, it says to either enter the root password or press ctrl+d to skip the recovery. How do I enter the root pass? Just entering the pass by itself makes it says 'bash: no job control in this shell'
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe Ubuntu version I want to install is Server 10.04 LTS 64-bit. My new machine does not have a CD-ROM drive, so I had to install Ubuntu via USB flash drive.
After following Ubuntu official website instruction and use "Universal USB Installer" to "burn" iso images into USB drive, I could boot Ubuntu via USB smoothly.
However, after going to the installation menu, hitting ESC key twice to enter the command prompt screen, then typing "install modules=ppp-udeb" and going through the installation process, the installer just didn't try to probe my pppoe connection and there is nowhere to set pppoe config. Also my NIC cable had already connected to the pppoe device.
I can't install filezilla. I've searched and written the line (sorry can't emember what it was exactly) in terminal, but it didn't find filezilla. I then found another thread and tried writing as shown by aysiu in the screen grab. But, it got to 99% and then after ages said it couldn't finish (see screenshot).

I'd had some problems with dependencies on the way to this message and installed gcc and g++ successfully to solve them. But now it's telling me can't find KDELibsDependencies.cmake. I've checked it out - it's not in the directory. After installing cmake, I'm kind of at the end of my wits - I just don't know where to look further.

I have an M-audio Keystation 88es that I was using with Live 8.1.1 on Windows XP, but when I tried to install Live on the new OS I couldn't.
