Debian Multimedia :: Shotwell - Fail To Import Video With Correct Date

Jan 26, 2015

I'm on Debian Wheezy using Shotwell 0.12.3. I have a bunch of .MOV videos that I want to import to Shotwell. I choose import from folder and select copy pictures. The import proceeds and shotwell tells med the .MOV (and some .jpg:s) are imported. The pictures are imported with no problem and placed in an event 2014-10-19 as expected. But videos are placed in an event dated 2004-01-01 and not in 2014-10-19 where they belong. Obviously, Shotwell does not use the files last edit date. I though maybe there was some bad dates in the metadata and opened the files in both Totem and VLC player but concluded there is no such metadata available (as far as I can tell). So how does Shotwell determine the date for .MOV files? Where does 2004-01-01 come from? Seems random.

Then, I tried dragging all movies in Shotwell to the event where it really belongs. That is, where the recently imported photos got placed 2014-10-19. But instead of the videos beeing moved into that correct event, now all photos appears in the 2004-01-01 event.Undo that last step and close Shotwell. Then, instead I manually (in nautilus) copy the .mov files to the 2014-10-19 folder where the picures resides. Open Shotwell again which detects something happened and starts import the videos again. Unfortunatley they still show up in the 2004-01-01 event

Another wierd thing is if I manually (in nautilus) move the Shotwell 2004-01-01 folder away from the Pictures folder (out of reach for Shotwell). Then when I re-open Shotwell the event does not appear anymore - as expected. But If I try to once again import the videos, Shotwell tells me all videos are duplicates and does not import them!?! In other words, manually removing a folder from Shotwell mess up the database. And that database is obviously not used to populate the events tree in the gui.How do I get my video to appear in the correct event? Alternatively; is there a photo/video library in Debian that actually works?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Digikam - Renaming On Import - "Create Date" Versus "File Modification Date"

Jan 24, 2011

I just switched from a basic digital camera to a more advanced one that stores both Jpeg and Raw (.Nef - it's a Nikon) files for me.When importing files in Digikam, I rename the files so that they start with Date and Time. Example: 20110121-223748.JPG for a photo taken on Jan 21st 2011 at 22:37:48.I was a bit surprised when importing both the JPEG and the Raw version of the same photo, that the filename is different by a few seconds (no constant offset, sometimes they are the same):

20110121-223748.JPG
20110121-223750.NEF

I did some "research" by looking at the exif data of both files (using "exiftool 20110121-223748.JPG" from the command line). Here is what I got back

(amongst other data):20110121-223748.JPG
File Modification Date/Time : 2011:01:21 22:37:48+01:00
Modify Date : 2011:01:21 22:37:48
Date/Time Original : 2011:01:21 22:37:48

[code]....

So it seems that Digikam is using the "File Modification Date/Time" (different in the Jpeg's and Raw's of my camera) rather than the "Create Date" (the same for both Jpeg and Raw). (The few seconds difference in "File Modification Date/Time" between the two versions of the same photo is probably due to the time that my camera needs to write away the data on the SD memory card. I guess.) Is there a way to have Digikam use the Create Date? (Or the Date/Time Original?)

PS: I'm on Ubuntu 10.04LTS, using DigiKam 1.2.0

Debian Multimedia :: Shotwell Not Publishing Into Facebook

Jun 18, 2015

I'm a desktop user and I rely heavily on Debian and shotwell to organize my images. I also use shotwell to publish images to a popular social networking site, Facebook. Recently I wasn't able to make shotwell publish into Facebook.

I was still on Debian Wheezy and decided it was time to dist-upgrade to Debian Jessie and hope that this would sort things out. It wasn't easy for me to upgrade - but I think I made a fairly satisfying one as I can normally use what I use my desktop for (work and entertainment).

I still cannot use shotwell to publish into Facebook.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Desperate To Get Video Import Working In 1104?

Jun 1, 2011

I have been trying to get video import to work on Xubuntu 1104 for nearly 2 weeks without success. All I am trying to do is to drag video from my Sony Digital 8 Handycam via firewire onto my PC for safekeeping and editing.

- Installed Kino, then found it did not work because of a permissions error. Used gksudo to get around that then found it was giving me a firewire error..raw 1394 kernel not loaded or failure to. Did a load of research and de-blacklisted the ohci drivers. Also installed dvgrab to make sure this aspect worked ok

- Used the list command to determine that the PC could see the firewire card, all OK

- Went back, using gksudo, etc to drag the video files in, same error as before

- Went onto the Kino website [URL].. (seems not to be updated that much) and , again, de blacklisted the firewire drivers

- Went to the Ubuntu website and found this.[URL]...but none of that worked for me.

- Searched through the Ubuntu help forums, not yet found a solution that works for me. Installed Ubuntu studio to see if that worked, no joy. I am now at a complete dead end. I am simply trying to find a piece of software that plugs in, works first time without issues, and allows me to initiate video imports as outlined above. Is anyone able to help me resolve this problem please?

My only other option, if I can't solve this, would be to install a copy of Windows 7 on my machine and use e.g a Pinnacle product to solve the problem. That would be a major failure as I much prefer to do this using my current set-up.

OpenSUSE :: When I Set The Timezone To Europe/UK The Date/time Are Correct UNTIL Reboot The Laptop?

Feb 25, 2010

I just installed OpenSuse 11.2 3 months ago on my laptop. I'm running with the Gnome Desktop. I live in Chicago and am currently in London. When I set the timezone to Europe/UK the date/time are correct UNTIL I reboot the laptop. After reboot if I type in the 'date' command it shows the time at 6+ hours from London time. When I check the hardware clock 'hwclock' it displays the correct London time. I check the time setup with yast and it shows the correct Timezone but again shows the 6+ hours difference. I change the time in yast and and my applications ( e-mail) display the correct local time again... UNTIL I reboot and then I'm right back where I started - wrong local time ! I suppose I could write a little startup script to do a 'hwclock --hctosys' but I thought I'd check here first to see if anyone out there had any ideas..BTW - I hate to say this but on the same laptop running XP I don't have this problem AND I didn't see this problem in OpenSuse 10.3 or 11.1

Debian Multimedia :: How Does Iceweasel Keep Itself Up To Date

Jan 4, 2015

I have been a casual Debian Wheezy user for quite some time now. And one of the things that alarms me is that how does Iceweasel keep itself up to date on the latest secuirty patches ? I also use Windows on my desktop and it is dual booted with Linux. In Windows I use Nightly build of FireFox. They update themselves almost everyday. Normal Firefox also seems to update pretty often. But Iceweasel only updates if I do an aptitude full-upgrade

And that is also once a month. So how is Iceweasel expected to be secure if there is such a long delay in the patches ? Iceweasel also does'nt have a "Check for updates" options like Firefox.

Won't we be better off using the normal Firefox on Debian distributions ? IMO that gives faster patches for security issues.

Also does Iceweasel use Flash Player or gnash ? Because running dpkg gives me the following output-:

Code: Select allsreyan@debian:/usr/share/dict$ dpkg -s gnash
dpkg-query: package 'gnash' is not installed and no information is available
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.

Flash Player also has individual updates in Windows which is maybe once every 2 weeks. I also don't see that in Debian. Flash players need to be kept up to date since they are responsible for most security breaches.

I had started a thread some time ago where a user commented that Iceweasel was out of date and needed to be replaced by Firefox. [URL] .....

So why is the Debian community still sticking to Iceweasel ? Why not switch to Firefox like Ubuntu ?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Old Video Card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT Now Beginning To Fail - Which Way Is Best, ATI Or Nvidia?

May 3, 2010

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).

I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu. On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

Debian Multimedia :: Playing From ISO - Correct Menu Settings

Jul 17, 2010

I have some DVD's that I've saved to my comp as an ISO, in Ubuntu they would play fine in Movie Player or VLC, but I've just tried to play one on Debain Lenny and I have the following issues.

Movie Player:
Will play the video but wont bring up the main menu so that I can select which episode that I want. It won't even skip to the next one, it just starts playing the first.

VLC:
So I then though I'd down the trusted ol' VLC. VLC brings up the main menu but I can't select any thing. It just sits there and playing the menu screen for a bit and my mouse clicks seem to have know effect (except double clicking to change to full screen). Then it starts playing the first one, if I try to skip it goes back to the main menu and starts all over again.
This particular issue I sometimes had in Ubuntu with Movie Player (depending on the ISO) but VLC would still play it fine.

Update:
Just got VLC to run the menu correctly by doing the following:
File => Open Capture Device => File Tab => Browse to the file, select it. => Click OK.
I don't really want to have to do this every time I want to watch a video. Does any one know of a setting that will do this when ever I click on the ISO to play it?

Debian Multimedia :: Setting Correct Screen Resolution With Squeeze

Jun 18, 2011

I just set up my dad's pc with Debian Sqeeze. It runs perfectly fine and after trying a lot of distro's Debian is the only one that will not crash or freeze up X. Now we're forced to using my own 17" monitor instead of his 19" wide screen since the max res is 1280 x 1024 in Sqeeze. What he needs is 1360 x 768. I found out in the wiki that xorg.conf needs to be edited. Since the file does not exist it needs to be created by running "Xorg -configure" in tty after stopping GDM. when running the "Xorg -configure" command this is the output;

" vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx bot found."
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed. "

It's an Intel Sandy Bridge integrated graphics chip. I've tried running "Xorg:1 -configure" as mentioned in a forum but that simply gives me a "unknown command" answer.

I would prefer to have 13-Jan-15 or 13-Jan-2015 or at the very least 13/01/2015, i.e. in some order consistent with my European brain.

Debian Multimedia :: Up-to-date Binaries Of Mplayer, Mencoder And Ffmpeg

I'm wondering if anyone distributes mplayer, mencoder, and ffmpeg, up-to-date builds of each and their associated dependencies (x264, faac, xvid, etc).I had to compile all that stuff myself and fought with it, and finally got it working.

If no one distributes latest builds, then I was thinking of going further with what I've done to help others: virtualbox lenny and automated compiles of all packages and putting up the builds, with latest revisions of mplayer and ffmpeg from their source code repos. Using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to isolate the build so any modern linux can run the produced binaries, with only glibc as a dependency.
