Debian :: Automatically Start Graphical (SDL) Program As Root On Non-graphical Debian?

Mar 3, 2009

I'm not a Linux noob, but I am far from guru. I'm running a single board computer with a slightly customized Debian Etch (customized by the SBC vendor). No Gnome/KDE/X installed. My application is a control application which uses SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) to paint some basic graphics on the VGA. I need to run it as root because the application calls iopl() to access an IO port.If I run my application manually from the command line, life is sweet. From Googling around, I found http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/28, and hence I:1) Created a script in /etc/init.d2) Executed "update-rc.d scriptName defaults" to link the script into the boot sequenceAll very straightforward. My application starts at boot. But when I try to SSH/SFTP into the SBC, I get "Connection refused". So I can't manage the SBC anymore, and this is a big problem. I am not sure if it's relevant, but my application starts before the SSH daemon. My script looked like:

case "$1" in
start)
echo "Starting my application"

General :: Xorg - Set Environment Variables For A Graphical Login?

Mar 18, 2010

I'm looking for a way to set arbitrary environment variables for my graphical login on linux. I am not talking about starting a terminal and exporting environment variables within the terminal, because those variables only exist within that one terminal. I want to know how to set an environment variable that will apply to all programs started in my graphical session.

In other words, what's the Xorg equivalent of ~/.bash_login?

I have updated the gdm file to be able to log in as root in Fedora 10.Nevertheless after I had selected package updates to be installed logged in as root I still get an error message that I do not have enough privileges. The terminal installation method is a bit of a problem since I do not think it will search for dependencies and therefore it can be excessively long to figure out what is missing for a package installation. In simple cases it works OK, but in more difficult cases it is a bear.

Debian Multimedia :: Odd Graphical Glitch After Squeeze Upgrade?

Apr 4, 2011

So I've upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze, which has been a tadge more interesting than I would like, but there it is. But I've got one problem that is eluding me still. When I load up, but before login, my second monitor displays what I can only describe as a glitched-up memory of something it was displaying before, unless it has been turned off and turned back on again (as opposed to restarted), in which case it displays a very bizarre tiled image. I can't help but feel this is something obvious I've missed.

Debian Multimedia :: Fonts In Iceweael 4.0?

May 2, 2011

Just installed Iceweasel 4.0 and i must say, the fonts really looks shit See screenshot: [URL]... I thought this would be fixed with a newer version of libcairo but it seems that it is not that import to fix this shitty font. It's giving me a headache. To be honest, the fonts looks much better in Ubuntu (not that i now go back to Ubuntu for that reason). All the topics spent on the libcairo issue are mostly a waste of time imho if it is not fixed at the source. Well, i don't wanna nag about it. I only wonder, is there a good solution to fix it and help me get rid of my headache (besides taking an aspirin).

Debian Multimedia :: Graphical Application To View Logs On Remote System

Jan 16, 2015

I have a web server that hosts multiple websites. Am looking for an application that can be run on my workstation and makes it possible to watch Apache logs live.

It should have a tabbed interface. When I launch the application, it has to connect to my server and should automatically open all access.log and error.log files and display all changes in real time (similar to tail -f command).

Does anything like this exist?

I'm tired of logging in many times in Konsole and executing tail -f commands to see parallel logs.

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Fonts Can't Be Set With Qt4-qtconfig (Testing)

Feb 1, 2016

I've just set up an alternative testing installation starting from Jessie and I've instantly noticed that the appearance of VLC can't be set via the qt4-qtconfig application (as I've done so far in Wheezy and Jessie), in short VLC doens't respond at all to any setting changed in qtconfig .

Looking at the bug reports for qt4-qtconfig and particularly this one #564548 looks like there are indeed issues with qt4, and comment 17 states thatQt4 entered in "only security bugfixes" mode, so this won't be fixed.

Debian Multimedia :: How To Update Cinnamon Desktop Environment

Jul 9, 2015

I'm using debian with cinnamon desktop on a laptop with a second monitor. The panel (the bar where there are the application title bars with some system infos like battery status and clock) is only displaying on one screen depending if it is set as a primary screen. I wanted a way to get a second bar on the second monitor.

Ideally I wanted that each bar should display only the application which is present on that screen but this is completely optional. The most important thing I wanted is at least to duplicate the bar on the second monitor so I can check the clock and other infos..

First I thought that this should be only a little configuration problem.. But I rapidly understand that this is simply not possible. But I also discovered that the new version of the cinnamon desktop (2.6) have got many improvement and is that provide this dual screen options.

I then saw that my version of cinnamon is the version 2.2.16 (the version that is supported by debian). I went to the cinnamon website but I don't find any information on how to install this version.. All the information is related to the linuxmint distro.

Debian Multimedia :: XDG Runtime DIR Not Set In The Environment - Segmentation Fault

Oct 31, 2015

Running programs in X (WindowMaker) as another user.

Until recently (Debian Stretch) I was able to run graphical programs in X as a second user, like so:

- log into X as user1
- run "xhost+"
- run "su - user2"
- run any graphical program (gthumb, konquerer, ...) as user2

Now when I try to run a program as user2, I get

Code: Select all user2@localhost:~$ gthumb
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.
 Segmentation fault

XDG_RUNTIME_DIR for user1 points to /run/user/1000 which I believe gets created by pam_systemd when logging into X. However, doing "su - user2" does not create /run/user/1001. Why not? And how do I get on-the-fly user switching working again?

Related to this, /run/user/1001 not being created on user switch has always caused me some grief b/c audio would not work for user2. But I could work around that by piping pulse through a socket. But now graphics are also broken and that I can't seem to work around.
