Jun 10, 2010Alright, the lifehacker article about this Acer machine got me interested in revisiting XBMC as a media center. I bought the AR1600-U910H from Newegg and have been struggling for a couple of weeks to get it working correctly. I opted to install a full Ubuntu desktop to utilize the hardware fully with a standalone version of XBMC. I am currently running Lucid with NVIDIA 256.25 (was running 195 series) driver. Switched to 256 because I heard it fixes the no multi-channel output problem. However, sadly I can't get multi-channel out to work. I have the HDMI output going through my Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver for both audio and video. My problem is I can only get stereo sound out while running XBMC (or any application for that matter).
I've upgraded Alsa to 1.0.23. I've installed new Beta 256.25 NVIDIA driver. I've configured Alsa about 28 different times. I'm at my wits end. So, my question is - does anybody having a similar setup with the ION chip (or the Acer Aspire Revo in particular) where they can succesfully get HDMI digital audio pass through to a receiver (or at least digital multi channel out)? The best I've gotten is 2 channel audio, which doesn't do a lot of good on a 5.1 setup. If I would have known getting multichannel audio would be so difficult I would have rethought starting this endeavor. I don't care if I have to do a fresh reinstall of everything - if that means a different version Ubuntu so be it.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Not Working (in XBMC) On Server
May 29, 2011I've been trying for a day to get sounds working on my HTPC which is running Ubuntu Server (Natty) and XBMC from the repositories. I have so far had no luck, with not so much as a peep on any channel - analog, optical or over HDMI.
My setup is a ASUS AT3IONT-I with an Intel Atom CPU. I think this is a common configuration which should not require any special treatment, and I also have a friend with the same hardware and no problems running XBMC on OpenSUSE.
XBMC is installed according to the instructions here [URL] with a user named xbmc etc. It works wonderfully in every aspect except that the sound is missing alltogether.
I've been following [URL] for troubleshooting but have now run out of ideas, which is why I'm asking you.

Jul 31, 2010I am having problems: videos have sound, but no picture.I'm using a Gigabyte motherboard with integrated ATI video, and I've read before that XBMC (and Ubuntu in general) don't like ATI too much. Is there any hope left to make XBMC work?I've tried the following:1. Fresh Ubuntu installation, default ATI drivers. Result: when starting a video, audio is okay, but no video. Also, visibly slow graphics even while navigating XBMC menus
2. Installed ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver via System->Hardware drivers. Result: significantly accelerated menu navigation, but no video still. Note: having no problems watching videos via VLC or Totem Movie Player (after downloading proper codecs)3. Fresh Ubuntu installation, then downloaded and installed ATI's proprietary Linux drivers from ATI's site (ati-driver-installer-10-7-x86.x86_64.run). Result: yippee, I see some video, but wait: no color!! (all videos are in sepia-like mode)
4. Followed these instructions to install the unofficial ATI drivers. Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Stops Working After 1-5 Mins Of Playing Sound?
Dec 14, 2010Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

Jun 7, 2011I am at the end of my tether in trying to get sound setup on my Ubuntu installation. I have tried many different 'fixes' that people have suggested, but none seem to work!
My setup is as follows:
> HP Proliant Microserver
> Ubuntu 10.10
> Zotac GT210 card
> HDMI from GFX card to AV amp
> 5GB Ram
What I want to be able to do is:
> Play music from FLAC files I have ripped in either stereo or sudo 5.1
> Play DVD iso files that I have ripped in the audio format found on the original discs (DTS etc)
I have managed to get sound working before, but only in stereo and I couldn't get it working in XBMC (not the sound from the main movie I chose anyway). I have since completely broken the sound after trying various things found on the interweb and cannot get it back.

Jan 15, 2010I bought an LG external cd/dvd unit (model: GP08 ).
The problem is that I have no sound when playing DVDs. Everything else works fine. I installed libdvdcss (followed this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Re...ts/PlayingDVDs) but still no sound on DVDs (the DVD works fine on a windows machine).

Jan 6, 2010When I start my computer, my comp is set to require password everytime I start the computer. I am using Karmic with all the latest updates. One day, from the Login Screen itself, I selected the Power icon at the bottom right and selected Shut Down. But, from next boot, the login drum sound wouldnt play and even the african sound that comes after logging in wouldn't play. The african sound problem was solved when I noticed that my sound was muted by the GDM on shutdown. However, the drum sound still does not come. I think the solution it to change the volume before logging in.

May 16, 2010I've installed kubuntu 10.04 recently. I'm following the guide at [URL] to set-up the system. I've installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras package however I do not get any sound while playing mp3s. The sound system is working as I get the kde tune when I start up. I have tried playing mp3s in amarok, audacious, kaffeine and vlc. None of them work.
I opened system settings -> multimedia. It shows four devices and only the one which says 'ALC883(analog)' works in all categories (notifications, music, video, etc etc) when I click test. However sometimes I get a notification saying that the device doesn't work.
Another thing I noticed was that the mp3s play when Dolphin shows a preview of the file when it is selected. I mean that there is a preview part in the right hand part of the window. When I press play there, the mp3s play. But there is no sound when I play movies and mp3s in amarok, audacious, vlc or kaffeine
The motherboard I'm using is Gigabyte M61PME-S2P. Its an nForce 430 motherboard with integrated graphics and sound.

Aug 14, 2011Just like the title says, when I use mpd with pulseaudio, I get no sound but clients appear to be playing (ncmpcpp and gmpc). Other players such as vlc or mplayer work just fine. If I go under the mixer, I get "no application is currently playing or recording audio" under the "Applications" tab when playing through mpd. In contrast, when I'm using mplayer or vlc, both show up in that tab. It behaves as though pulse is simply not configured to work with mpd.Here is my config (edited out any commented line for brevity):

Jan 18, 2010I recently switched to Ubuntu 9.10 from Fedora 12 because it was giving me problems, but now I've run into some problems with Ubuntu. I really only use my computer for internet and music, and I'm not really able to listen to my music.My computer is an HP Pavillion dv7-3060US laptop, AMD 64bit processor, 4gb ram, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530 graphics chip and an ATI chipset (not sure which).
I have an altec lansing speaker configuration, with a built in subwoofer on the bottom. My problem comes that the sound is coming out of the subwoofer, not the actual speakers themself. When I try plugging in an external set of speakers, nothing happens, the sound still plays. Switching the device from "Interal audio analog stereo" to the other choices in my list does nothing (system>preferences>sound is the list im talking about)I'm able to hear music through my subwoofer when using totem music player, but neither rhythmbox nor amarok play any music. amarok doesn't play at all, and rhythm box shows the music is loaded but no sound comes out and it looks like its playing it at 2x speed.
I've attempted to follow the comprehensive audio problems guide here but I get to step 3 and the website isnt the same, so I can't continue.These are the outputs from the first few steps:

Feb 3, 2010This is true for .flv, .avi, .mov, and .mp4, at least. This is true in both vlc and movie player. Thumbnails generated from frames in the videos appear correctly in nautilus. Videos play fine in firefox, on ....., but I downloaded one as an .flv and then it had the same problem. I have restricted extras freshly installed. My "Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala" system is fully updated. I've found several other forum posts about the same kind of problem, but I couldn't find anything helpful in them (like that the contrast setting might be WAY out of whack, which it wasn't, or that nvidia drivers needed to be updated or reinstalled, which I don't have anyway, etc).

Jun 25, 2010I am getting horrid sound distortions whenever I try to play a dvd. The video will play, but there are frequent popping and squeaking sounds. This problem does not appear when playing saved avi files. I have tried both movie player and vlc, getting the same effect. It does not seem to be a hardware problem, as it does not appear when running windows on the same machine. Nor was this a problem on this hardware using earlier versions of Ubuntu. Changing dvd's, using a different dvd drive, even ripping a dvd to an iso and playing the iso with vlc did not help.

When ever i'm playing a file in any player, Rhythmbox, Exaile, Totem... and i mean a sound file, i can't listen to my 5.1. Actually... when ever i choose from Sound Preferences -> Output -> Profile: 5.1 I can listen to the Bass kicking, and all my speakers works. Now, when i change manually the song, or automatically... or even when i Stop and then Start again the playback, i loose the Bass and not all my speakers works as intended. When i go to Output Profile again, 5.1 it's still selected. I have to change back to something else, like 4.1 or stereo and then back to 5.1 so the Bass and all speakers work again as they should.

Feb 3, 2010The sound doesn't play through the main speakers, but instead plays through the subwoofer on the bottom of the laptop. The headphone/mic jacks don't work either. I've listed the relevant lspci -v code in my other thread, but I'm not sure what other information is needed (like I'm trying to find the exact sound card I have so I can google around for a solution but since everything in laptops is so specialized I don't really know what to look for).
I do apologize if this question has somehow been answered elsewhere but I've waited 2+ weeks for a response and have gotten nothing. Also, I tried following this sticky thread but the link it refers to in step (3) under general help does not work, so I cannot proceed with any of the directions.
I am anxious to resolve this problem as I just discovered compiz-fusion and it just makes it even more fun to be loaded into my Ubuntu install, and I'm anxious to make the full-time transition to Ubuntu but I won't be able to do that if I can't play music.

Jan 23, 2011I recently bought a new notebook, an Asus N73JQ. This notebook has a special sound system called "Bang & Olufsen ICEpower". The first thing I did was to install Ubuntu 64-bit. After installing and rebooting I am certain that i heard the Ubuntu login sound but ten minutes later when i tried playing music with Spotify all sound was gone. The login sound now gone too. I have tried editing settings in System -> Preferences -> Sound, with no luck. The settings dialog lists two sound devices, "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and "HDA NVidia Digital Stereo (HDMI)". Sound output device is set to the Internal Analog ** device. I have tried different profiles for this device but nothing seems to work. Does anyone here have the same notebook/sound system with a working sound configuration?
