Durring the upgrade from lenny to squeeze everything went fine but grub2 fails to configure
Setting up grub-pc (1.98+20100804-14) ....
and it hangs, even freezes there...
Is it safe to restart the server, will grub1 still function if I do ?
I had Fedora11 (default layout) running on a separate hard drive (winXP on the other drive). After the FC drive failure I replaced the drive and did a fresh install again. This time I tried a custom layout to keep the /home on a separate partition. The installation went without a hitch, but on first boot the system hangs with "Verifying DMI Pool Data......"
XP boots fine though. Looks like grub doesn't get loaded. I can boot with the installation cd and get into recovery mode, everything seems fine on the fedora disk. Fdisk result:

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Latitude 1001 laptop which has XP installed. I have selected the option for Ubuntu to run alongside Windows but, on selecting the Ubuntu option at boot up, the installation stalls at "Verifying the Installation Configuration". Before this window came up, a very brief text message flashed on the screen - something like "getpwuid failed" (it was on the screen for only a second or less, so I didn't have chance to note it down. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may be wrong (I have never used Ubuntu so please make any suggestions very simple).

2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 9 22:29:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The problem is that I can't reboot it. It just hangs after "Will now restart" message.
I've already tried: reboot=b, reboot=a, reboot=h kernel options.

We're in the final process of building a home, and I had them setup a wiring box where all the coax and cat5 terminates into one closet, which will also house my server. Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer that is off the internet. It usually works right since I took great care to make it as 'clean' as possible from outside forces.Lately it just hangs whenever GDM is about to start. How to troubleshoot?
I tried a live CD SystemRescueCD, it works even the desktop environment works. so I e2fsck the partitions of the hard drive okay, memory test/checked the 1.2GBRAM -- passed other than these, I have no clue how to troubleshoot.Oh, I also used an nvidia driver which I forgot how I did it because it was installed almost a year ago.
Thunar, for some reason, always seems to become non-response and consumes 100% CPU after I open a certain folder on my external hard drive. What could be the cause of this? I've tried opening the same folder on Windows and it didn't give me any problem, so I'm assuming that the problem lies within Thunar, and not the external hard drive itself.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAs of today I can't seem to use the search feature of Nautilus (in GNOME 3). Say I open my home folder and press Ctrl-F to get the search bar. Whatever I type, as soon as I stop typing and Nautilus should start the search process, it just freezes completely. The cursor stops blinking and that's it, all I can do is run `killall nautilus` from a terminal. According to the System Monitor nothing is really using CPU.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI changed my user name with the following commands:usermod -l $newname $oldnamegroupmod -n $newname $oldname usermod -d /home/$newname -m $newnameAlso replaced every instance of /home/$oldname ith /home/$newname in ~/.config.Now gdm3 hangs with a black screen and wristwatch icon. (I can move the icon with the mouse.) This worked fine with gdm. I've looked for gdm3 files that have /home/$oldname in my home and in /etc and couldn't find anything significant.Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this or where to look? For now, I've disabled gdm3, and I'm using startx. This is an installation in virtualbox. I just tried using ctrl-alt-F1, but it dropped me to console in the host system. (Nice rush of adrenaline came with that.)
The only errors in Xorg.0.log are there even with a successful startx. (EE) Failed to load module "xboxvideo" (module does not exist, 0)(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directoryCouple more bits of relevant information - this was a live-build that I installed using refractainstaller. I also changed /etc/inittab to disable auto-login. Here are the changes, original lines commented out, new lines look like the inittab in my regular squeeze install, but I don't think this is the problem (see below.)

I'm running an LMDE install, but with the Sid repositories.Everything has been fine until yesterday's updates, after which I can't boot normally. The boot hangs at the login screen, and nothing works - not the mouse, the keyboard, the touchpad, nothing, and it requires holding the power switch to get out. I can boot to a root recovery console, but networking doesn't work at all there. I can run startx there and get an X desktop as root, and networking still doesn't work. No wireless, no ethernet, no nothing. From the recovery console I can run shutdown, and when prompted for a password, can enter Ctrl-D, which immediately drops me back to X, to the normal login screen, which now works normally, and I get a normal X session in which everything works. This is the same for all installed kernels, including 3 versions of the Liquorix kernel and the standard Squeeze kernel. It would appear to be something in my settings in /home, but I can't find anything that looks suspicious. I ran smxi again after booting through the root console, without any improvement.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLike the subject says, the whole system just hangs at gdm startup. No mouse or keyboard response. Didn't have this problem with lenny. My guess is there might be a problem with the graphics drivers. The box has ati rage 128 pro graphics card.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this
I am behind a university http proxy (squid) server and all of my internet connections have to go through it. I haven't been able to find any setting in Evolution that allows me to specify my proxy settings.
Searching on Google, it suggested that evolution can't work behind proxies and works only with direct connections to the internet.
I wanted to know if there is any way round this problem. I tried posting the same question on gnome list and gnome hacking list and no reply has come so far.
I am just trying to setup my debian 8.2 stable in my Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N2600 @ 1.60GHz. The installation goes smooth without any issues. For this system , we are planning to use DUAL display with HDMI & LVDS.
We see that that only HDMI is working and LVDS screen is blank. However, we notice that XRANDR is is showing LVDS as connected

Sometime back I installed cpufreq. Now while I know quite little about cpufreq, what little I understand tells me it can do two things :-
a. Give the user the capability to change frequencies - there is something called max frequencies and minimum frequencies and the user can play between them.
b. Show the cpufrequencies via the GNOME cpufreq plugin/applet.
Now while its able to show me the frequencies, I'm not able to find a GNOME or GTK front-end which I can use to set the frequencies. I did read a little bit about something called 'governers' which from what I learnt are something similar to profiles - as in you want to be conservative, powersave, ondemand and performance.
1. I'm looking for a Gnome-GTK CPU setting frequency GUI.
2. If somebody wants to share more info. about the whole cpu frequency thing that is also very welcome as I'm not really aware as to how can I do things a bit more intelligently so I'm able to get a bit more performance while not using much energy (can be done or cannot be done ?) but that discussion hopefully comes later after I've a tool through which I can do the same in GUI.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI just set up my dad's pc with Debian Sqeeze. It runs perfectly fine and after trying a lot of distro's Debian is the only one that will not crash or freeze up X. Now we're forced to using my own 17" monitor instead of his 19" wide screen since the max res is 1280 x 1024 in Sqeeze. What he needs is 1360 x 768. I found out in the wiki that xorg.conf needs to be edited. Since the file does not exist it needs to be created by running "Xorg -configure" in tty after stopping GDM. when running the "Xorg -configure" command this is the output;
" vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx bot found."

(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

View 11 Replies View RelatedI recently switched to Debian Lennyx64 (from ubuntu) and I am really enjoying it so far. I have just one problem, when I drag open windows of any program around on my desktop there is major drawing lag of the window.
This happens in other situations like it is very painful to watch a fast moving IRC chat because of this lag.
I've tried using different windows managers and enviroments and the problem still exists. I have a pair of crossfired Radeon 4850s and I have the drivers installed from AMD's website. I have a first gen Phenom x4 with 8gb of RAM so I don't think its an issue with resources. I tried looking at the Xorg.conf but I really do not know what to look for.
After unsuccessfully trying to install some updates on my debian squeeze system, I can no longer login to gnome when I restart the system. I've tried logging in both as root and as user and have typed in 'startx' or 'gnome-session' at the prompt but I get an error message "**(gnome-session:12020): WARNING **: Cannot open display:". I've searched the web for solutions but nothing works. I've had my debian squeeze for over three years now with no issues.

View 0 Replies View RelatedI'm running Wheezy and just did an apt-get upgrade which installed linux-3.2.0-4-amd64, a bunch of php5 stuff and some qemu stuff. Now when I log into the desktop it starts loading and before it finishes I wind up with a screen full of text. The first line is usually "BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at <some address that varies>" but sometimes the first line is off the screen. None of KDE, Gnome or xfce work. Recovery mode to a shell prompt works fine. I did a net install of Wheezy on another disk and that runs just fine. I'd like to get my original disk working.

Computer B is configured similarly to Computer A. They have identical configuration files (at least, all the ones I've checked are identical), and when Computer B powers on, the RAID array is automatically mounted, mdadm takes care of all of the things it's supposed to, BUT, NO icon for the RAID array is automatically placed on the desktop.
