I just installed Debian 8 and ran vnc4server. I want to get Gnome on a client computer so I read some threads on the internet telling me to edit the ~/.vnc/xstartup file, which I did. Unfortunately I've tried multiple edits of this file and I cannot get it to work properly. Any working script of what it should look like for the latest stable version of Debian?

I've setup Debian 6 on a PC and allowed remote desktop to it.
I'm having an issue that everytime I remote desktop to it via VNC it ask for the default keyring password, but how am I supposed to enter this if I'm not by the computer that I'm trying to remotly access? Can gnome keying be disabbled altogether? Never had this issue with Debian 5.
i have noticed about 10 desktop crashes since may, because of gnome videos(totem). in particular, when i repeatedly open and close videos, the desktop freeze. should i use another program?
View 0 Replies View RelatedI'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

I can SSH into my home computer (Ubuntu 9.04 running Gnome) from work (Win XP Pro) using RealVNC via Putty tunnels. This has been working flawlessly for me for awhile now. I was messing around in the terminal window and accidentally rebooted the linux box (home computer) while I was at work. No big deal I thought. So I re-start the Putty connection, and it is back up in no time. Then I try to start the VNC connection, and no go, connection refused. I remember seeing that in order for the VNC connection to work, I had to be logged into the Gnome desktop already on the Ubuntu box.
Question:
Is it possible to log in and start up a Gnome desktop session from the terminal command line in Putty so I can get the VNC connection back?
Is there a way gnome can allow a remote desktop / VNC connection if no user is logged in? If the server gets rebooted I can't access it (remote desktop / VNC). Someone physically has to go there and log in. Surely there must be a way as gnome is running just waiting for a login.

OpenSSH is supposed to do that, isn't it? Thus, I'm going to install OpenSSH server on his Debian, but - to avoid security holes - I'll write two scripts to start and to stop the OpenSSH service; he will run such scripts whenever I need to check his machine, to make OpenSSH server available only when needed. I'm also aware that disabling console access for root is better, and that I should log in as a regular user and then do "su".

Also, the personal wiki I set up on it to be viewed via a normal web browser cannot be accessed, either. Both time out when attempting to connect to them. I can still ping the Debian machine when on the same network, though.
This started some time ago when we had a failure occur on our main server.had to powercycle everything in order to restore things back to normal, the Debian machine included. Since that time, this problem started to occur. This is a major thorn in my side in attempting to prepare for our website to move,I've been unable to figure out how to fix it.Originally, I thought it would be something in between the Debian machine and anything else, which would mean something like our firewall box or our hardware switch was the problem. But the tech support people who maintain those for us confirm that there is nothing wrong with them, so now I'm not certain anymore.
I have a bit of an odd network setup, shown in the pic here:I am trying to remote desktop from the XP boxes on the side to the one on the bottom, behind a Debian box/firestarter firewall. Is this possible to do without changing my network (IE wiring/topology) setup? If I had my druthers, I would put the router behind the Linux box, before the XP box, but my work laptop does not allow me to connect in that fashion as I can't change the internet settings.
I am certain the setup is correct on both the Windows clients and host, so it has to be something with my firestarter firewall, or something else I'm completely missing. I have the RDP port opened on firestarter, but whenever I try to connect to the XP box, whether it's by computer name or LAN IP address, it is unable to connect. I had thought about setting up a VPN server on my Debian box, and then VPN'ing to it, and then in turn RDC'ing to my Windows machine. Is this possible? If all else fails, I may just plug the Windows box directly into the router and deal with the lower security or get a second wireless router just for my work pc.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get an laptop running more or less like a headless server, my reasons are not all that serious. Mostly I want to leave the laptop running as a seed box when my main PC is turned off, also want to setup it up as a media top, common place for media files and playback on Tv. So essentially I want to be able to access the remote machine, preferably sharing the same session and persisting while I log out from remote.
What I've done:
setup keys for ssh to connect automatically between machines, so I can login via terminal, access the file system without issues, which is already a great step. enabled remote access on remote machine lightdm manager setup deluge for daemon torrenting, which enables almost seamlessly client to connect remotely (though deluge is not the best with speed)
What I've tried so far:
Connect directly with a new X session
Code: Select allX -query your_server_ip :1
Works alright, creates a new display (:1) which is oddly in F2 tty instead F8 as is expected. Works alright, not much lag, audio is not routed.
But an issue! whenever I decide to log out X will simply shutdown, screen goes black and I can't resume on my regular session on my local machine.Connect X with nested Xephyr session

This works too and might be the best solution yet, a windows is created and the remote session is nested in your current X session. Visual and performance is ok. Only real issue is that session is not shared, eg, application will not remain running...Connect via VNC
So it seems only solution for shared sessions is VNC.
With the remote desktop apps from KDE (which is the DE for both), I can connect buzz around and etc, but its kinda cumbersome and laggy, password always resets and I usually need to accept on the remote machine.
I've tried setting up lightdm to allow a vncserver at logon, but this is erratic at best, took a long time to get the Xvnc command correct enough for me to login remotely, and even then got a garbled screen and the X session wasn't even the same...
So that's it... Isn't there a way of regular X session sharing in the remote computer? Or a better solution for lightdm vnc invoke?
My wife has taken over the desktop (ubuntu 14.04 LTS). I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.
I have a Debian VPS running Lenny and I'm trying to setup a way to run remote desktop sessions from it. I went with FreeNX, NX client for windows from nomachine, XDM and xfce4. All seems to have installed well, but I can't start an NX session on my box. I can connect to the server and authenticate, but the client hangs on "Downloading the session information," eventually timing out. The log output is below - I'm not even seeing an error message. Any ideas?

The only thing I noticed during install, which was about 400 packages since this was a barebones VPS, was that I should consider recompiling the kernel with CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y. I don't know if this has any impact on session information, however, since this is a new session, not one I'm trying to resume.

We're in the final process of building a home, and I had them setup a wiring box where all the coax and cat5 terminates into one closet, which will also house my server. Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal

Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I am new to Debian and have a new install. How does one change the desktop from gnome to kde? Also, I would like to change the screen resolution, but under preferences > screen resolution, the settngs are blank, ie, no resolutions to choose from. This Debian install is from the latest net install iso.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

But when i hit play nothing happens the name of the song flickers but nothing happens... what do i do now? I tried uninstalling banchee and installing it again but had the same results.is there a way to set multiple desktop backgrounds on gnome?

I am running maverick 10.10 with ATI drivers and two monitors. When I boot up both monitors are enabled and in multidisplay mode, showing the login widget and background, but when I log in the second monitor gets disabled and I have to use the ATI control panel to reconfigure to multidisplay. Not a major issue but rather annoying. This also happened with 10.04 LTS BTW. I was hoping for better behaviour in 10.10.
Is there a way to persist the ati control panel configuration across reboot +relogin ? Why would gnome desktop startup disable multidisplay ( and where might that be configured ) ?
I can't see anything obvious in /etc/gdm for this. xorg.conf lists both monitors enabled.
