Debian Multimedia :: Continue Apt-get Install Ignoring Errors
Nov 28, 2015
I am trying to instsal Gnome. While installing, 'gnome-getting-started-docs' fails. This is not a critical package, and I would like to see gnome installation / setup continue.
Is it possible with some command line options? I've tried 'apt-get -f install' 'apt-get -m install gnome' and various combinations thereof.
(Error I see is 'dpkg-deb (subprocess): decompressing archive member: lzma error: compressed data is corrupt).

I'm using Debian Wheezy on amd64 using the binary nVidia drivers from the Debian repository. When I started up my computer yesterday, everything worked fine. Then I started installing a bunch of updates going back a week since I had it turned off for a week. This seems to have messed with my nVidia drivers. I could run GNOME at 1080p just fine, but I couldn't run prboom-plus or glxgears since they would give me errors about not being able to find a screen. Strangely enough, Wine could run both Proun and Bulletstorm without a problem.
I looked at synaptic and tried to install nvidia-glx to solve my driver problems, but it gave me an error about not having the correct version of libgl1-nvidia-glx. I try installing that and it wants to remove 140 programs first! Of course I refuse to let it do so. Then I figure it might have to do with some other program that these programs are dependent on. So I check the package dependencies and lo and behold, they all require libgl1-mesa-glx. I try removing that and synaptic also says that I have to remove those 140 programs with it. I give up and try playing the Half-Life 2 demo via Wine. When it hangs I restart my computer. However, while rebooting, I got this nice error message from X that said that apparently I don't have any nVidia drivers anymore.
I would prefer not to use sgfxi to do driver updates. One of the reasons I switched to the repository's drivers is because I was tired of having to reinstall my drivers every time there was a kernel update in testing.
Tried using vesa in xorg.conf, it also didn't work. Detailed X output said something about being able to find a screen but it wasn't usable.

I asked the question on LQ, but since activity related to Debian there is smaller, it is here.
I can't start Openbox, using xinit or startx. I have a warning when using xinit:
Code: Select all***** Imlib2 Developer Warning ***** :
This program is calling the Imlib call:
imlib_context_free();
With the parameter:
context
being NULL. Please fix your program.
I don't have dbus, display managers, X is started on tty3 because I reduced the number of ttys. In xinitrc there is
Code: Select allexec openbox-session
I see a cursor appearing for a second, but then the screen goes back to tty.
The problem is new; I'd been using Openbox for a couple of months back then, and it was fine.
System is Unstable.

I have defoptions=quiet in my menu.list file and it keeps printing
ignoring bad line 1 'powernow-k8' across the screen during boot. The thing is that I have removed that line from /etc/modprobe.d/options, so why do I keep getting the warning?

I have new hardware (Nvidia Geforce GTX 960) which required new drivers. I'm running jessie but had to install the driver version 352.30 from the experimental repo. Everything seems to work fine, except after a suspend. On resume, the X server exists with errors, and I'm dropped back to the Linux console.
I've done a fair amount of searching, but the problem most people seem to have is corruption or black screen. I'm getting something equally annoying but less severe: I just get dropped back to the shell, but as soon as I restart the X server with startx everything continues to work... until the next suspend.
My full Xorg.0.log is at [URL] .... . Here are the errors that appear after the suspend:
Code: Select all[ 1772.779] (--) NVIDIA(GPU-0): DFP-6: disconnected

I've been running Lenny for quite a while and have always been plagued by strange CD writing/erasing errors in K3B. I also tried erasing my CDRWs using wodim from the command prompt but had erratic results there also. I was researching these problems on Google recently and finally found a solution as well as an explanation of the cause of all the difficulties. Go here [URL], do some reading and then download/install cdrtools-3.00 from the link on the main page. The package did all the work for me including updating the default programs in K3B - now everything works as it should. I sincerely hope Debian will reconsider the trouble-prone fork of the original cdrecord (wodim) and make Jorg Schilling's excellent cdrecord the package of choice for future releases of Debian.

I have bunch of partitions on my Debian server installation, so I was experimenting with partitions and saw that is one partition fails fsck on booting time, system waits for root password or CTRL+D key combination. The problem is that my Debian machine is headless and I use only SSH to it. So if fsck fails, I can't to login to SSH (off course, because it is not loaded at this time). So I need to go with monitor and keyboard to machine and press CTRL+D.One option is to disable disk checking at startup by changing fstab file. I don't like this option. Is there any possibility to auto continue booting Debian machine ?

So I recently purchased a Linux Virtual server and I've got everything configured pretty much except for PHP5 for Apache. I keep getting this error when trying apt-get install php5 and apt-get update:
[Code]...
I checked my sources.list file and it's setup correctly, and I even added ftp.us.debian.org but it's still not working.I'm pretty familiar with Linux and can't figure this one out. The server is connected to the internet as I can access my websites from the internet and SSH into the server, and the firewall is configured to allow SSH, HTTP, and FTP. I believe apt uses HTTP and FTP so it shouldn't be blocking anything.

I have exim setup on squeeze to run as an "internet site". Outgoing mail works fine but it seems to just ignore incoming smtp requests on port 25. I can see the incoming connection via tcpdump but exim doesn't seem to talk. If I connect via telnet it rather quickly says connection refused. Is there something additional I need in the Exim conf?

My computer was getting slow. I know I had a problem with flash for sure. I was thinking it was because I haven't done a dist-upgrade in a while and there were a lot of updates.
So last night I backed up all my important data and did a dist-upgrade. Well now IceWM no longer shows and it just boots to command line. Not the first time I've done that.
Anyway, when I run 'apt-get -f install' I get hung up with errors on Samba.
Errors were encountered : /var/cache/XXX...samba_2%3a3.4.8~dfsg-2_i386.deb
I tried to remove samba but was unable to and 'dpkg -r --force-all samba' returns a processing error.
The error states that it can't locate File/Temp.pm in @INC.
I am sure someone with more knowledge could easily salvage this. Funny, I have been running sid for 5-7 years now and it has given me very few problems. And pretty much every problem has originated from my hand. Typing the wrong thing, accepting the wrong option, or accidentally deleting the wrong folder.

I am running Debian squeeze and I am trying to install hplip-3.10.5 so I can use my new HP Photosmart C4750 printer.I downloaded the automatic installer and ran it and it gave me the following error message:

error: A required dependency 'cups-image (CUPS image - CUPS image development files)' is still missing.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency.
error: Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.
So I ran apt-get install cups-image and got the following:
raygo75@RayGo1:~/Desktop$ sudo apt-get install cups-image
Reading package lists... Done

E: Couldn't find package cups-image
does the package "cups-image" exist? and if it does were can I find it. I have looked to no avail. I have posted a question on hplip seeing as that is were I got the script from.

I've just migrated to Debian from Ubuntu on my server. So my first post here. I've had some problems and questions when installing and configuring Debian, now everything seems very smooth, but still I can't find answer to one question. My machine is headless and I allways use SSH to it. I have several partitions on machine so if one of them fails on booting time with fsck, I need to press CTRL+D combination to continue. In that case I need to go to the machine with monitor and keyboard and press that combination. Is there any way to automatically continue for example after 30 seconds ? Then I could log in to the system and check log files what is wrong. How can I do that ?

I was upgrading from lenny to squeeze. At the apt-get dist-upgrade step, at some point (after upgrading and configuring) it tried to create a new certificate for my mail server but creation of the certificate failed, dpkg reported an error and the whole process exited with error. So I rebooted the machine and issued again apt-get dist-upgrade but now the certificate was created successfully . After that it upgraded mysql-client and the process finished.
But I don't know if configuring of the upgraded packages has stopped at the point where dpkg stopped. I suppose so, because very few packages were configured at that point. Is the solution to run dpkg-reconfingure -a (or -u ?) or dpkg --confingure -a or something else ? (dpkg has the PACKAGE STATES)
dpkg --configure --pending gives me no package for configuration.PS: At least I hope that all packages were upgraded and a few were not configured. Is there a way to confirm that all packages were upgraded ?

I have already started a thred here about RAID failure: RAID5 failed, system drops into limited single mode - openSUSE Forums
I was not able to boot the system until I commented /dev/md0 in fstab
Why is it so?
This is just a files sharing partition, it is not a system partition.
Is there any option to always ignore any errors and continue boot?

I have an issue with normal boot (fail safe boot doesn't have this problem). The boot process just stops and nothing happens, I just see the green background, the white lizard and no moving progress bar. I've given it about 40min without touching it, but nothing happened. If I press escape, the last log print says its mounting/mounted the hard drive. Not until I touch the head pad or press a key, it wakes up and the boot procedure continues. I once had a similar problem on opensuse 11.1 which could require much tickling before booting up completely. This was never seen on 10.3, 11.0 and 11.2, but now its back in 11.3.

Downloaded and copied to a usb pen drive the latest debian testing snapshot netinstall iso:
wget url
then
dd if=debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb
Everything went fine, even the install part. After the 1st boot, problems started. I've never seen so much errors after a first install and probably they are all reported.
1. ata_id[297]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb'
2. mkdir: cannot create directory `/run/udev/rules.d/': Read-only file system
3. startpar: service(s) returned failure: udev ... failed!
4. INIT: Id "co" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
5. eth0 doesn't automatically start; one has to start it via ifup eth0
After that, installed a minimal xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and kde-plasma-desktop.
I'm unable to use the newly DE environment, the screen just freezes, I'm guessing because of the udev error.
I have to restart via Magic SysRQ key:
Alt+PrtScr+S > Alt+PrtScr+U > Alt+PrtScr+B

I installed Debian 5.0.8 alongside Windows XP 64bit, and the installation went fine. However, when I choose to boot into Windows, the menu still shows the option to continue with the Debian installation. Debian was installed by burning the iso in Windows and then launching the CD rather than booting into the CD. My searches turned up with results to actually continue with the installation process, which like I said, went just fine. I want to boot right into Windows from Grub (if Windows is selected) instead of having the installation menu pop up again.

I have a sony vaio vgn-AR71s with dual boot Vista and Ubuntu, no problems there.Since, over time, I messed up my previous Ubuntu setup while trying to get my wifi working, I decided to reinstall the whole thing and give it a fresh start. (as after two Kernel updates my wifi card drivers should be supported)I Reinstalled Vista and drivers after which I downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, burned to a disc and rebooted. When the Ubuntu installation was almost finished I got an error, the disc I was using got overheated (bad quality CD) and there was a problem copying certain files. However my hard disk was successfully partitioned and divided in half (1st partition Vista -NTFS and second Ubuntu -Ext4). But my laptop still boots directly into Vista ignoring the partly failed Ubuntu install, no boot option at startup. When I reboot using the LiveCD I can only install Ubuntu on a newly created third partition.
Is there any way I can continue or repair the previous ubuntu install? I searched this forum and the internet for options and hints yet don't seem to find an answer. The good thing is my wifi card is finally working (when I booted from the LiveCD it immediately detected wireless networks yeay)
