Debian :: PS3 Running An .img Of Squeeze - Out Of Space

Feb 10, 2011

If you haven't heard, PS3's on custom firmware have access to a linux install of sorts.

The OS is running from an .img of a Debian squeeze install.

My problem is that installing anything makes it run out of space. (It's only a 1Gig image)

I have searched and found some info, but it doesn't seem to work.

Make sure you have loop module on your linux.

Now you can copy the linux.img to your root of usb stick...

AND...

Mount first the original 1gb linux.img and then copy it to somewhere and then create an bigger image and copy to the new image.

mount:

And then follow the how to above. i think you should copy the folder with rsync because cp command will damage folder permissions!

Debian :: Deb Squeeze Running From USB-stick

Mar 8, 2011

I want to get a running Squeeze onto a bootable USB-stick to test it, to make desirable adaptions and adoptions and only when I feel, that everything is okay, install that over my existing Deb-installation.

The DVD however offers only an "install" over an existing Linux-system, destroying that. Really hours and hours of Google aso. brought no solution to a - in my opinion - simple task.

I want to transfer the content of the DVD onto the USB-stick, make that stick bootable and THEN enable me to act like the system on the stick were my real OS, including of course making changes to the configurations. Only when I'm satisfied with the result, I then want to overwrite my existing system.

Debian Multimedia :: Running Squeeze - Give KDE A Try?

Jul 28, 2010

For many years I used KDE and loved it. After Ubuntu appeared and got popular I decided to give Gnome a try as I figured that it must be OK if they used it in Ubuntu (and selected as the default desktop in Debian). I missed out on all the wailing and gnashing that accompanied the release of early versions of KDE 4. I've been using Gnome ever since and I have a really nice setup on squeeze - Chrome for browsing, Geany for development, Gnote for notes, Evolution for offline Gmail and Google calendars.

In fact, it's probably because Gnome is working so well for me right now that the geek in me fancies having a bit of a tinker with KDE. I keep reading that version 4 has now matured enough for production use. The only thing that puts me off is the sheer number of packages I need to install. I'm going to end up with a right mess in my menus etc, but still it might be worth it. What do you reckon - should I just stick with my nice Gnome desktop or should I dip my toe back into KDE? (or go for l33t status and install Xfce) I've got a thinkpad T400 with integrated intel graphics.

Debian :: Running KDE 4.x From Squeeze - Manual Install

Apr 21, 2011

I have recently installed Debian Squeeze on my main machine at home. I used the default installation options, which meant gnome was installed as the display manager/GUI. Once I got the system up and running, I have attempted to install the latest KDE display manager/GUI. I executed the following commands:

$sudo apt-get install kde4

and then responded as required when asked if I really wanted to get and install the huge list of programs this involved.

When booting up in runlevel 3, I would log in, and then execute the following command:

$ sudo kdm

the screen would go blank and I would eventually get a KDE error message saying:

"Cannot open theme file @@@ToBeReplacedByDesktopBase@@@"

I would then be given only the option to press OK, which would dump me back out to the command line. I can get the GUI to start by executing "Startx", which doesn't require sudo to run I might add. The problem is that this command starts gnome. I would like to start X from the command line, but be given a choice of either GNOME or KDE.

Question 1: How do I fix the issue which generates the error message detailed above?

Question 2: How do I set up X to ask me which display manager I would like to use? and

Question 3: Am I correct in assuming that KDM shouldn't require sudo to run? If so, how do I adjust the situation so that it is correctly configured to run like gnome (without requiring root access to run)?

Debian Multimedia :: Just Installed Squeeze / Running Back To Lenny

Feb 6, 2011

I could not get the hardware to work with Lenny's ancient drivers, so I gave up and decided to upgrade to Squeeze.Well, the hardware works (except sound), but KDE4 is a such a disaster that I want to run not walk! all the way back to Lenny. I'm stunned that after four years of active development, this desktop still doesn't have something as basic as keyboard shortcuts or the ability to place icons where YOU want them.

The widgets frustrate me to no end. The new K menu is impossible to navigate. I'd rather hang myself than use Dolphin as a file manager. KDE4 gives me more notifications than MS Windows' crapware. And it's UGLY !!! The "Oxygen" theme makes me want to tear my eyeballs out.

Debian Hardware :: Graphics Card On EMac Running Squeeze

Apr 27, 2011

I installed the powerpc version of Debian Squeeze 6.0.1a on an eMac. According to the Wikipedia article, these systems had an nVidia geforce2 MX graphics card, and the system is using the Debian open nVidia drivers from install. I've gotten everything working on it, except the graphics are off. It's acting like either it can't handle the resolution or all the colors and looks a little like it wants to run in 256 colors. It's not unusable, just annoying. I know that it can handle a normal resolution because it was doing fine under Mac OS X puma before I wiped it and installed debian (I put debian on it because I needed a modern web browser, and the ones available under that version of Mac OS X weren't doing the job). I went to the nVidia website, but they only have the driver for x86 Linux. I need it for the G4 powerpc. Any ideas? I'm used to running Ubuntu on x86 machines, so the powerpc thing is throwing me a bit.

Debian Configuration :: Reboot Cycle Running 64bit Squeeze On Intel T3200 Dualcore

Mar 13, 2011

running Debian Squeeze (standard 32bit squeeze Kernels linux-image-2.6.32-5-486 and linux-image-2.6.32-5-686) happily without trouble on a 64bit capable Samsung laptop featuring an Intel T3200 Dualcore processor. However, when I try to boot using the squeeze 64bit kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) the system proceeds through a few text lines immediately after Grub, and then performs a warm start.

The text output I get immediately after Grub look similar to the ones I get booting the 486 and 686 kernels, without any indication for the reboot behavior. The rebooting also seems to happen before any entry is written into the boot/system log files (logging is enabled). This behavior also occured when I first tried to prime the machine from the Debian squeeze install CD using the amd64 kernel. I'm generally happy with the 32bit kernels, but I'd like to use the amd64 support to do some Java compatibility testing for 64bit architectures.

The Laptop is a Samsung R510-Aura T3200 Delfina with the following Hardware and Setup (using Grub as boot loader):

- Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz (see http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37160 for details)
- NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS
- 3GB RAM + 1GB reserved for GeForce
- Konfiguration Details:
-- Phoenix Bios

[Code]....

Maybe a strange BIOS-Setting that works with the 32bit kernels but not with the 64bit kernel? I've seen a post on here that indicates someone is running the amd64 kernel on a T3200 successfully, and the chip is definitely 64bit capable, so the reboot behavior is a complete mystery for me

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - LP Group With No Members Not Even Root

Mar 23, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 and have been trying to set up a USB printer. I hit a problem which I eventually diagnosed as being the ownership of /dev/usb/lp0.

First, the symptom:
~$ cat Test > /dev/usb/lp0
bash: /dev/usb/lp0: Permission denied

The initial diagnosis:
~$ ls -l /dev/usb/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 2010-03-23 21:39 /dev/usb/lp0

Notice the lp group? When I checked group properties, this group did not have any members - not even root! The default for CUPS (from the CUPS doc) is lpadmin, in any case, so not sure what lp is all about. In fact, the 'lp' group has ID=0, the same as the 'root' group.

I fixed it by doing this:
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/usb/lp0

Then I noticed that /dev/lp0 and /dev/parport0 also had group=lp, so I also did this:
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/lp*
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/parport*

Software :: MD Raid5 Kicked Out Two Members And Won't Start After Reboot

Apr 14, 2010

Suddenly I noticed that all my file system had gone into read-only mode. My first thought was that the Sata data cable had got loose for one of the drives, but that wasn't it. All cables were connected correctly. So I booted up again, but I only came to a rescue mode terminal.

I have four software MD raid volumes:

Code:

Running mdadm -D on the volumes told me that the sdc drive had been kicked out from both md0 and md1. However, md3 had kicked out two drives, so I couldn't get any information from mdadm -D on that. For md0 and md1 I could just add the kicked-out partitions back into the volume, but for md3 I don't even know which partitions got kicked out...

Here are some outputs:

Before I rebooted the first time I saved the 200 last rows of dmesg to a memory stick. Here they are:

Code:

Trying to restart the md3 volume in the rescue mode terminal:

Commands:

Code:

Output:

Code:

The "Array State" row seems interesting. I guess that AAAA means all four drives are OK. But then why does the array state differ between the members?

Does anyone know how to figure out which two members that got kicked out? And how do I get them back in (assuming that they're OK)?
