Debian :: Enabling Autologin In LXDE Not Working

Nov 30, 2015

I'm running Debian + LXDE in a VirtualBox. Here are the details:

Code: Select all➜  ~  hostnamectl
   Static hostname: debian64
         Icon name: computer-vm
           Chassis: vm
        Machine ID: #############################
           Boot ID: ###########################
    Virtualization: kvm
  Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid
            Kernel: Linux 4.2.0-1-amd64
      Architecture: x86-64

I really would like to jump into my desktop environment when I start my machine without the need to enter my user name and password. Apparently this is very easy to do. I added the following lines to my /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Code: Select allpam-service=lightdm
pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user=username
autologin-user-timeout=0
session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession

And also added my user to the autologin group

Code: Select allgroupadd -r autologin
gpasswd -a username autologin

As you can imagine, it didn't work. Otherwise I wouldn't be here... I also tried to install Slim and enable autologin adding the following line to the /etc/slim.conf

Code: Select allauto_login = yes

That didn't work either!

Am I missing anything? Enabling autologin in LXDE?

Is it possible to install Debian 8.2 lxde WITHOUT Libreoffice? I have successfully installed it on an eeepc with a 4 gb ssd

But then removed Libreoffice to have room for files.

It works great! It would be nice to just install Debian lxde without Libreoffice, which I do not use, I prefer gnumeric and vim.

Debian :: LXDE - Cannot Mount Drive When Connected Via Usb

Apr 6, 2010

I just discovered how much Debian when paired with LXDE sucks! I thought it was a good match, low resource DE with Debian, supposed to be stable and secure, right? Debian Squeeze and LXDE is one big BUG! What garbage! Too many damn bugs.

I installed Synaptic Package Manager but it went into three places in the menu but only one of them works. So, how do I know which one to choose? Really crazy. Also, I cannot mount my drive when connected via usb. But, my laptop only has usb ports and no eSATA. I now have to look for a new OS and DE because this one is a disaster.

Debian :: Lenny 505 LXDE Lists Almost All Packages As Orphaned

Jul 20, 2010

I just installed Lenny 505 LXDE (from the LXDE/XFCE install CD) on an old IBM Thinkpad 600E. It works fine (and fast). However, both apt-get and aptitude tell me that dozens of packages are orphaned, and these packages include essential things, such as the entirety of Openoffice and LXDE. Apt get reminding me that I can purge these packages (and wreck my system), and aptitude wants to remove them before doing anything. How can I force Debian to recognize that these packages were purposefully installed? Aptitude keep-all kind of worked. Autoremove no longer tries to remove the entire system, but deborphan still goes crazy and says all my packages are orphaned.

Debian Installation :: LXDE Session Only Lasts 10 Seconds?

Apr 18, 2010

I have just upgraded to the latest testing packages with aptitude and now when I log in I get 2 error messages. One is "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem." and then if I click on view details I get "/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup..." As long if I don't click OK the system (LXDE) is completely usable and the only thing that doesn't seem to be working properly is wifi - I think I was using network manager which doesn't seem to be loading. The other error message is: "GTK+ icon theme is not properly set This usually means you don't have an XSETTINGS manager running. Desktop environment like GNOME or XFCE automatically execute their XSETTING managers like gnome-settings-daemon or xfce-mcs-manager.

If you don't use these desktop environments, you have two choices:

1. run an XSETTINGS manager, or

2. simply specify an icon theme in ~/.gtkrc-2.0.

For example to use the Tango icon theme add a line: gtk-icon-theme-name="Tango" in your ~/.gtkrc-2.0. (create it if no such file)

NOTICE: The icon theme you choose should be compatible with GNOME, or the file icons cannot be displayed correctly. Due to the differences in icon naming of GNOME and KDE, KDE themes cannot be used. Currently there is no standard for this, but it will be solved by freedesktop.org in the future." clicking OK brings up icons etc. and desktop background. I am using an SSD and when I set up the laptop I think that I made /tmp a folder on a ram disk (and maybe a few other temporary files as well). Could this have anything to do with these error messages? (one also pops up about battery empty when the battery is still @ 100% but that is less irritating)

Debian :: Wrong Resolution In LXDE - 500Mhz IBook

Jun 26, 2011

I have installed Debian Lenny with LXDE on a Dual USB 500Mhz iBook g3 the login screen appears displaying the screen using "800x600" pixels with the screen resolution at "1024x768" - so the login screen fills 2/3 of the LCD with black space to the right and the image repeating itself in the bottom 1/3 of the screen The "System Tools" > "Monitors Settings" only list one setting size of "800x600" and "Auto" After trying to search for answers I have tried editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (after stopping gdm and rebooting afterwards)

# ... after these lines
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"

[code]...

But nothing changes.

I have also tried [ dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ] but there is no prompt for resolution

Debian Configuration :: Using Live LXDE Wireless WDA-1320?

Sep 11, 2011

I do recall being able to at least figure out Debian enough that I got my wireless working (a few years back). Today I popped in a fresh Live LXDE DVD. I can't find that my wireless is recognized, nor can I find any graphical network management utilities. Nothing network related. Perhaps its all in the command line, but I'm not too familiar with it (though I'm not averse to following instructions if I can use that to simply fix this issue).

I did look at documentation first. To the best of my ability anyway. I could not use it to help myself. Once I get internet working, at least I can trouble shoot on the Debian installation itself, which makes the process much easier. Having to switch out to a Windows installation is a pain.

Debian Multimedia :: Enable Hotkeys With LXDE On Jessie

Apr 27, 2015

I've been using debian for well over a year, previously with the gnome desktop. I never really liked how much memory and CPU it used, but many things like the hotkeys worked out of the box, and it was relatively easy to configure. After upgrading to Jessie I decided I'd give LXDE a go given it was lightweight and seemed more complete than e17.

However, after over a day struggling to get everything to work just right, I am still unable to use use my hotkeys (volume control, brightness control, etc.). The volume can be controlled through the GUI, but the brightness seems to have no control whatsoever. In any event, I installed the drivers and firmware for the hardware and used the instructions in the link to try and configure the key bindings, but nothing has worked: [URL] ....

:Questions#Change_hotkeys I'm not sure what to do now.

Debian Multimedia :: Faulty Icons In LXDE Task Bar Since 8.0

May 2, 2015

I saw that on every computer in which I installed LXDE on Debian 8 (the problem was not existing on Debian 7.8.0)

So I decided to use mate-desktop-environment but a brand new problem (always ) made his apparition when I try to use tightvncserver on a Mate desktop (no task bar, and memory growing GB after GB up to the memory explosion after 1 or 2 minutes with 16GB RAM -I will post another subject for that once I will know more things about it - since it is, after all, an huge problem causing the computer to crash if "reboot" our "vncserver -kill :1" is not quickly done)

But here talking about LXDE taskbar: others LXDE users, do you have this problem with the icons ?
